What You Need To Know About Convictions: Romans 14

  • Is alcohol sinful? How about tattoos, movies, music, the Sabbath, or food? We have got to get biblical when it comes to our convictions. Biblical in our understanding of whether or not these things are sinful and biblical in how we treat those who disagree with us. This verse by verse teaching through Romans 14 will give real clarity to the issue of your convictions and how to treat others who differ. You’ll also find out what is meant by “the one who is weak in faith” and what is meant by “whatsoever is not of faith is sin”.

      @@konkoor881Not really, if you feel "wrong" doing something, then it's wrong for you (and you already know that). I know that committing sin is often fun, there's a "rush" associated with doing something your conscience has forbidden, but if you aren't supposed to do something, don't do it.
      A great example is listening to Ghost B.C., the pretend (maybe?) Satanist band. I don't think listening to Ghost is inherently a sin, but if your conscience is telling you not to do it, then don't, because it is sin for you.
      On top of it, don't force your conscience to grow calloused, so you can "enjoy more stuff". You've been given a conscience for a reason, use it and heed its call.
      I think the main reason you'd have a problem with this is that right now you are wanting to do something that you know you're not supposed to, and you're looking for an excuse, or confirmation, that you can do it. But you already know, if you have to ask, the answer is usually no.

    • @SeanWinters
      @SeanWinters Před 11 měsíci +1

      @@konkoor881 1. I'm not a child, nor a predator, thus, I'm not on discord.
      2. CZcams is a fine spot for debate, but you're just wrong here
      3. I literally said the opposite, that "if you have to ask, then it's probably no", how do you misquote me so poorly as to literally say the opposite of what I said?
      4. Your attitude is entirely unbecoming of literally what this passage is about in the first place. What do you think you're doing? Why are you so mad? 😂
      5. How does my (correct) reading of this passage cause anxiety? It's incredibly simple. Do you feel your conscience telling you not to play 10 hours of Fortnite a day? Then yeah, stop playing 10 hours of Fortnite a day. There is no anxiety in this, you'd have to twist this meaning entirely in order to become anxious over this.
      6. Yes, many things can become a sin. Heck, worshiping God in the wrong way can be a sin, Serving the poor in a specific way can be a sin, but it's all about the conscience of the person, those "weak in faith".

    • @SeanWinters
      @SeanWinters Před 11 měsíci +1

      @@konkoor881 Well, God told me no such thing on the matter, in fact, God gave me a lifetime of knowing people who try to twist the rules in order to justify sin, and God gave me a sense of pattern recognition. So, pretty sure God gave me that as a layup.
      And considering your continued anger, it certainly seems like you have a problem with restrictions, why? Do you have a problem with guardrails on the road? Do you have a problem with the walls of a cup? Restrictions give form and use to a thing. Restrictions on our conduct give us safety and freedom.
      A cup without walls can hold no water, is that water truly free, or simply useless? Is a road without clear lines more free, or just more dangerous?

    Before coming to Christ, I spent 10+ years getting tattooed! I found it as a way OUT and a way to escape the pain I was dealing with on the inside (abusive relationship and depression), but after I got saved, I had a conviction to stop getting tattoos, and I repented for all my tattoos! Now, my tattoos represent my old life apart from God. They are a part of my testimony and also a reminder of what I was before Jesus rescued me. As a heavily tatted Christian (now), I can help another brother/sister understand God's goodness and mercy. What the enemy intended for evil, God will turn for good. My tattoos have been such a great conversation starter for me to lead people to the gospel and how Jesus SAVED me! All glory be to God! AMEN 🙏🏼💗
    Many blessings to you. Thank you for your sound teachings & obedience to the Lord!

But I won’t destroy your conviction If it’s sinful to you it’s sinful and I’m not going to try and change your mind. We need peace not division.

After years of being told "but we're free!" in the mega church I attended at the time, and being called a Pharisee (the truth is I was headed down a law-following path), the Lord led me to study this and it led me to be saved, placing my faith ONLY in the work of Christ on the cross! I cannot find words more than THANK YOU for preaching this!

    Fantastic teaching. The Church needs more of this. I get a lot of hate from people because I don’t participate in the big holidays, and it’s the pagan aspects for why I don’t. If it’s about Jesus, it should be about Jesus, not Santa, not the Easter Bunny. Personally, I don’t think that makes me weak. But, I do enjoy wine on occasion and I just had my nose pierced; I get a lot of hate for this, too. A lot of people see me as a backslider. I don’t care what they do in their house, but I should be able to explain why (when I am asked) I do or don’t do something without being condemned.

      Danae, I understand. One son-in-law's sister is in a cult religion that forbids celebrating any holidays, birthdays, etc. So she was missing out on about 30 family celebrations every year. We talked and I told her that if she feels she can't come we understand. But she comes to the Super Bowl party, and she's not a football fan. She comes for the time with family. If her conscience allows it, she can just come to the other events for the family time, and not participate with the presents and other traditions. Her husband, who strictly adheres to these rules, found it to be an acceptable solution to come after presents are done and enjoy the family time. But I was clear that we accept them just coming on non-holiday times if that's what their conscience demands.

    • @SeanWinters
      @SeanWinters Před 11 měsíci

      @@cmdrdataythat's precisely the answer. Your friends and family don't have to be a part of all of every celebration, when conscience does not allow, there can be accommodations made for the "weaker in faith", which is not to say weak, but rather those with stricter consciences.

    Very well taught! One thing I would add is that the stumbling block is not just a warning for the strong. It is for both. The one with weak faith throwing their own conscience into the strong's face can cause them to stumble into salvation by works. And that is a far worse situation than a person sinning against their own conscience by having a beer as it can affect their very salvation. I've seen the weak cause the strong to stumble far more often than the strong causing the weak to stumble. The weak person usually digs their heels in harder on their conviction, although they do tend to do the sin of wrongful judging. However, I would argue that they were already in that sin.

    What an important message. Our Sunday school class is almost finished with a study in Romans (it's been about a year long process). It's sad that Churches split over convictions. My only caution on this issue is the possibility of a person justifying or rationalizing a conviction rather than being led by the Holy Spirit (i.e. I see people winning the lottery and I feel like I'm missing out. So since the Bible doesn't say, "Thou shalt not gamble." I guess it's okay.).

      @@travislee1012 Jesus said in Mark 2:27-28 that the Sabbath is for man.
      The Greek for man is Anthros, where we get the study for anthropology, which means mankind. It was created and sanctified by God in Genesis 2. It is the weekly reminder of the Millennial Reign of Christ that is to come. In fact, we will be observing the Sabbath as prophesied in Isaiah 56:1-8. So, you see, Jesus himself said the Sabbath was made for man, not just the Jews. In fact, those biblical festivals in Leviticus 23 that belong to the Lord actually starts with the Sabbath day. Were you aware of that? You can rest in Christ's finished work and remember the day of rest he ordained and said is for mankind. They are not in opposition to each other.
      Sincerely, a sister in Christ

    “In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:
    Who, BEING in very nature GOD, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he MADE HIMSELF NOTHING by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death- even death on a cross!”

      We are not under the law. We are under the new covenant that is the fulfillment of the first. Galatians 3:10-14 says that the law is a curse that Christ redeemed us from. James 2:8-13 says that if one is going to live by the law they have to keep *all* of it. If one breaks one part they have broken it all. The Mosaic law is not a buffet we pick and choose from. It's all or nothing. When someone tries to impose some part of it, I ask them why they don't have tzitzit on the four corners of their shirt, or any of the thousand other things they don't do commanded by the law. If they feel convicted not to do something, that's fine for them and I won't condemn them for it. But to put their own conviction on others is anti-biblical and making a stumbling block for others.

I highly doubt this apply to smoking, drugs, tattoos and such, as it affects our bodies which is the temple of the Holy Spirit which were bought at a price for God's glory. This is true. Nobody "needs" to agree on some things. We are all of us entitled to believe or think whatever it is that our minds can create. Or just about anything that our hearts can imagine up.
    However,.... as for me, I prefer to acquire after true biblical wisdom. And (I) desire to search out the (*ways*) of understanding. Because I want to be correct in as many things as I possibly can be. Less I be wise in mine own conceit. And though I may consider myself to be a wise man,.... being void of understanding,.... I am become a fool.
    Humility before God and man is the only way for a man to begin to learn new things, and to discover things that he in times past, never had the opportunity to consider.
    Proverbs 1:5, supports this concept.
    That is,.... that "Learning", (being *ABLE* be corrected, and reproved), is actually the first step towards gaining true wisdom.
    And that seeking after wise counsel is better than chasing after a nice car. Or whatever.
    Being able to be reproved is to be valued more than winning the lottery!!
    I would rather be in the right, and be accurate about anything that I teach others,....... than to be hasteful in trying to kind of force my views about a matter into appearing to be the one and only way to look at things. And by trying to force mine own opinions to appear correct,... make make myself appear to be the BIGGEST fool alive!! (LOL)!!
    Because if I research in the (way) of a man who is prideful, arrogant, and ignorant of ((ALL)) of the facts and aspects involved in a matter,....
    Then,.... automatically,... I am bound to fail in getting the True and correct understanding!!!!😨
    Because I searched with a prideful heart. And I did not desire, not had the care to learn the truth of the matter.
    This is also another metaphorical way in which the saying; "Pride comes before destruction" can be applied.

    Hello Mike. I have been watching your videos for awhile and enjoy them very much. Thank you for your ministry. I feel that your teachings have really been on point. The only thing in this video that I have a question with is this : Do our convictions allow us to break God's commandments? Does our faith allow us to break God's commandments? I think that this mentality puts us on a slippery slope. There is no commandment about eating or drinking, tattoos etc. I think that the faith/freedom issue doesn't cover the ten commandments. Keeping the Sabbath isn't about a day of worship, keeping the Sabbath is about taking a day of rest. A day when we can appreciate the things that God has given us and for us to reflect on God's blessings and promises. A day that God commanded us not to forget. The only commandment where God specifically tells us that we should remember to keep it. What are your thoughts?

      @cmdrdatayt Před 2 lety +2

      Jeffrey, Mike answered that in the video.
      Our guide to what is sinful is not our own conscience, it is scripture.
      On the one hand, the conscience cannot make sinful behavior good. Just because we don’t feel guilty about it doesn’t make it right.
      On the other hand, our conscience doesn’t make clean things inherently unclean. It is just sinful for that person alone, not for all.

    Romans 14 5 and 6 is talking about food. Some fasted on certain days some for multiple days other didn’t. If you did fine if not ,ok let everyone be convinced in his heart eat or fast on a particular day. Was not talking about keeping the sabbath at all. This is a go to scripture for Sunday keepers to justify their stand on “it doesn’t matter what day be kept holy”.

Paul simply did not take sides because nobody is wrong to dedicate Saturday or Sunday (the Lord’s Day) as their day of worship. Stay with the context. Neither are condemned- love and support your brother. Food and day of worship is not a issue to God as long as it is dedicated to our Lord!

    The teaching is clear, however carrying that out day to day by taking all thoughts captive to messiah, and actions as well, so to keep from offending others with our Christian Liberty and not being stumbling blocks to other believers or even unbelievers is a task in itself.
    The only way I will be able to carry that out is by the strength and guidance of the Holy Spirit In My Life as a man, a sinful man, (who hears the voice of the flesh more often than not) I think I'm going to blow it most of the time.

    Thanks for this Mike - good stuff here, explained very well. My only question is how does this relate to the Great Commission, and our imperative to reach people? Everything you talked about is within the context of Christian community, assuming there are no lost people. Can/should believers engage in amoral activity (getting a tattoo, having a drink, secular music in church, etc) if it helps reach the lost or done with evangelistic purposes? Maybe it's tied to a specific ministry outreach or something... How does one "balance" (if that's the right word?) reaching a lost person vs. not offending someone who is already a believer? I think there are genuinely some examples where offending a "weak" Christian might be the (unfortunate) result of trying to reach someone for Christ. Wouldn't someone getting saved trump offending someone who is already? My thought is that it would be better to potentially offend the Christian, based on Scriptural examples (Jesus at Matthew's house, Peter going to Cornelius' house, Paul's own life and explanation of becoming all things to all people in 1 Cor. 9). What are your thoughts on this?

    • @cmdrdatayt
      @cmdrdatayt Před 2 lety

      Shaheen, none of the activities you list as amoral are amoral. There is nothing inherently sinful in any of those. If a person's faith is weak (as Paul says in Romans) then they should abstain because their own conscience makes it a sin for them, but not for those of strong faith.
      Scripture only prohibits using them to sin, such as getting drunk. We should never sin to reach a sinner. However, refusing to enter the sinner's life at all makes it very difficult to witness. If a person is weak, they shouldn't go into situations they can't handle. But if they are strong, then they can meet people where they are. When I was single I would go to clubs and get a pitcher of Coke. I am fine with drinking for me. But I wanted to be available as a designated driver. And I showed that I could have just as much fun sober. Eventually, it led to some conversations.
      Not all are called to plant seeds. Some water, and some harvest. We don't all have the same talents either.

    Hi Mike. Very useful video. A question, though. Most of the examples you gave concern actions of the 'strong' that one could either do or not, i.e. eat meat or not. However, what if (hypothetical example) someone had tattoos on their face (perhaps since before coming to faith, and still considered it OK) or some such example where they are unable to alter their practice, perhaps due to medical or social reasons. (To be honest, having a tattoo is the only one I can come up with.) My question really is: in a situation like this, how does one not encourage a 'weak' person to fall? (I think I made that clear :) )Matt

    This is a very good teaching. One of the first things you said is that these are things about opinions not Doctrine of God Almighty. So where you lost me is about observing the Sabbath, Holy Feasts and not sure if you mentioned clean and unclean meat. These are not opinion. These are Commandments from above. He said they were forever! Messiah agreed in Matthew 5:19-21. Messiah was a Torah observant Rabbi obey the father's Commandments. We are to FOLLOW HIM. So what is sin? It seemed a little unclear in this message but the scripture is clear.
    1 John 3:4. Sin is transgression of God's Holy Law which is holy pure and good. Our studies get into the issue Paul was talking about. It was the conscience as you said whether or not to eat meat sacrificed to idols. Which was clean meat that God instituted in the beginning of time what was and was not food. Leviticus 11. Also the specific days they were talking about we're not Sabbath as you said but they were talking about HOLY FASTING. There is no Torah commandment it says you have to fast on a certain day that is an individual decision. But some were saying you had to fast Monday Wednesday Friday for instance. It was not a commandment of the father though. THIS type of me and made Doctrine known as the oral law is what Jesus fought about. He never fought about his father's HOLY TORAH that He FOLLOWED as an orthodox Jew and taught it to his followers. Other than that it was a very good teaching
