    Thanks for the memories. I operated out of Lajes Field on Terceira many times during the 70s. It was an important base during the Cold War. The changes in the Azores and Madeira since Portugal joined the EU are amazing. My main memories from back then are the gracious people, inexpensive wind and food (especially Alcatra), a magnitude 7 earthquake, and screaming winter winds. There were many times on approach to Lajes Field that I was told to land at my own risk because the tower had been abandoned because of extreme winds. Often approach control couldn't even give me the wind speed because the wind was so strong it had blown the anemometer off the top of the tower. The Air Force did build an awesome golf course across the valley from the air field. Great episode. I've slogged my way through the Wynns, Ruby Rose, Tulah's, and Sail Life's episodes and am now trying to catch up with y'all's. It's good to be retired. 😎 Fly Navy.

    All those stone walls remind me of the year I spent in Vermont. The only thing missing was a dozen chipmunks on the top having squabbles over turf. The Azores are definitely on our bucket list now. I'm going to bet there are a lot of UK expats there. They have a habit of taking over a local pub in each foreign city. Google it and see if you can find the pub. They do some pretty mean beer, Matt.

    Hey Matt and Jessica, It's Nadja, I guided your coasteering trip! It's kind of funny, I just saw your São Jorge video for the first time and found out that you met Filipe! The funny thing is that I worked with Filipe from the bungalows this past summer, the Azores are small but not that small. Such a funny coincidence!
    Watching your videos just made me miss the islands so much, it was nice to enjoy a bit the nostalgia. Hope all is well with you! Thanks for the trip down the memory lane ;)

    I'd highly recommend Lasik, I had it done in 2003 and have not even been back for a check up. 20/20. I was - 3.75 astigmatic and wore contacts for about 20 years, just a thought, I'm a surfer, and sailor and sea water works really well for flushing your lenses, but I cannot emphasize enough what a great procedure Lasik is

    I'm from the Grand Rapids, Michigan area, although my parents moved the family to the metro Atlanta, Georgia area in the mid 1960's, big culture shock back then. I wish I could be out cruising the seas, but my health prevents me from partaking in such fun. So I'm stuck watching a bunch of You Tube cruisers, living my dream. I've been following you off and on for the last year, and just discovered we shared the same stomping grounds in our younger years. It's always fun to find folks who come from a place you once lived at, and had tons of fun in your younger years. It's nice to see the world, even if you have to do it from someone else's eyes, thanks for the videos.

    If contacts don’t irritate your eyes or give you headaches, keep using them instead of LASIK! I had it 6 years ago and it gave me pretty bad dry eye and I have to use drops now. Turns out to be more common than you think. If you’re getting by with wearing contacts, it’s not worth risking eye surgery.

  • @ChristopherYoung5977
    @ChristopherYoung5977 Před 5 lety +10

    Jessica, you look beautiful in your glasses. Ditch the contacts! I also recommend getting some prescription Oakley style sunglasses with transition lenses. Much more versatile and durable. I had Lasik and it has caused me problems, such as itchy dry eyes and my close vision is terrible. I would NOT do it again.

  • @SailingLucille
    @SailingLucille Před 5 lety +1

    I had Lasik surgery about 10 years ago. I had worn glasses and contacts for most of my adult life. When I hit 50 my eyes changed and I needed glasses for reading and walking around! I decided it was time. The technology has come a long way in the last 10 years. Make sure you find out what method they are using.
    I had the kind where they cut the Cornea and pull it back and then blast the lens with the laser. I've heard that the latest method doesn't need to cut the cornea. My surgery went well and when I left the clinic I could see perfectly to distance. That is one of the things that they tell you. HOWEVER, I did NOT hear that sometimes that some people cannot focus up close immediately after the surgery.
    I am a graphic designer and I could not focus on small details for about 6 months. For a while I thought I might have to find a different career. Many people need readers after the surgery. Your eyes will get tired working up close. So, editing videos may be a chore at first. Another thing they rarely tell you up front is that you will need eye drops for dry eye. You will get headaches when your eyes get dry. If you stock up on saline drops you will be fine. I use Refresh brand drops with no preservatives. Some may sting your eyes, so test them before buying a lot. I also use ointment at night because my eyes get dry when I'm sleeping. FYI, that doesn't happen with everyone.
    I'm really glad I had the surgery. I rarely need glasses even for computer work. It's wonderful to walk out in the rain or the snow or cold and never have to worry about whether you are wearing glasses. Some people have trouble with bright lights at night. I never had that problem.
    Many people are now doing one eye for distance and the other for close up work. Mine were both done for distance. I need glasses to read tiny print, especially on charts.
    I'm very happy with the results. Since you are so young be aware that some people have to go back when they are older and get an adjustment as their eyes age. Mine surgery has latest 10 years with no issues. The only issue I have is when I have been awake all day and it is very late at night and I'm tired. It's sometimes hard to focus on small details. I keep my readers nearby in those cases. Good luck.

    I really have enjoyed each video and yes I’ve seen them all. I like the fact that you give such great content of so many beautiful places along with your lives sailing. The videos you post are better than most because of the length. I enjoy getting to watch a nice video not like some of the others posting 6-9 minute vids and milking their patrons. You guys are up there amongst the top sailing channels in my opinion.

    • @mattjohnson6716
      @mattjohnson6716 Před 5 lety

      Thanks for the kind words Tim. Jess was concerned that the videos were getting too long, but the only options were to cut out some of the stuff we've found interesting or pushing some of the content into a second video. We'd like to make sure there isn't just land travel in each video and at least some sailing. Therefore, for it to go in sequential order and timeline, we just have to make them long.
      Thanks,

    Love this and past videos. Concerning lasik, I had mine done 25 yrs ago in Canada (due to lower prices than US). The more procedures the Dr has done the better, look for someone who has done at least a few 1000 eyes. Custom lasik was not available then so it was standard procedure only. Since I had very poor vision for a long time, the Dr indicated my vision might regress which it did from 20/20 right after surgery to 20/40 2 months later. Luckily my corneas were thick enough to redo the procedure back to nearly 20/20. You will not be able to wear contacts for 1 month before being tested so that cornea goes to its natural state. Also,to my knowledge, about 5% of the patients have an auto-immune response- your body reacting to the cut in the cornea thinking that something foreign has attacked your eye. Dr visit the day after will be able to tell , and if present, will prescribe Prednisone drops. If the auto-immune response is severe (Sands of Sahara is the term and what I got) the Dr will want to see you nearly daily to make sure the drops are suppressing the auto immune response.

  • @lyfandeth
    @lyfandeth Před 5 lety +5

    Be very careful about who does your lasik. The damage from minor errors can not be fixed. Among other things you can suffer contrast loss, loss of night vision, ghosting (slight double vision), and "halos" forever after. If you are a good candidate AND you have a good surgeon, problems are rare. But don't just pick some guy from the phone book, please. Don't let prices affect your choice.

    Another great Azores video!
    With some adventure experience.
    In some islands there are something more intense experiences, like diving with sharks!
    Will be the next one? :) :) :)
    Now... more about contact lenses, glasses and Lasik!
    I made a Lasik about 6 years ago to both eyes!
    Sure, the pos-op days are quite uncomfortable, doing almost nothing for 3 days in my room with almost no light!
    And then... Some weeks later... all the same thing for the second eye .
    In my case, one eye was totally corrected with only one Lasik session, the other one, took more than one Lasik session!
    But all that, worth all the freedom i get back!
    Ended with all annoying things about contact lenses, glasses getting wet and "foggy" on winter...
    Sliding down to the tip of the nose due sweat on summer, etc etc
    No pain, no gain Jessica :)

    Your best episode yet. I love love love that place from what I have seen through your eyes. Thank you. On a side note Jessica be very careful with contacts. I know the feeling of making them last a little longer but as long as they are still very oxygen permeable you are fine. Suffocating your eyes, and you feel when you do, is very bad long term. Be careful and don't sleep with them on too often. Last thing is that another sv couple went for Lasik in Cancun and it was super professional with great results at a fraction of the price. Drystone or rubblestone walls are more interesting than you think. Check them out. If properly done they are held together in a three dimensional locking manner. So strong that in Ireland some walls are over a thousand years old. In the Azores rather less, but they still are neat.

BTW, I had Lasik almost 20 years ago and it has been fantastic. I still can see great without glasses, although it's not quite as clear. Eventually you'll have to wear glasses to read so while you're young go for it and be amazed at what it's like to swim and wake up with clear vision.

    Lasik is fine if you get it done by the right company. Don't go low end though. I got my eyes done by a company called TLC (The Laser Center). It's the same company that did Tiger Woods eyes. They are not cheap but you can save enough to get it done. One of the best things things that I ever did for myself. What impressed me is that they don't take everyone that walks in the door. They give for free about 8 pre-tests to see if you are a good candidate for the procedure. Everyone I know that had problems with lasik went to a cheap discount place to get it done

    Thanks for the nice videos! Really give a great impressions of the areas. With regards to your eyesight, check out endmyopia (youtube) or forum, you can reverse your myopia completely naturally with about 0.25 diopters every 3-4 months. Good luck.

      Nope... we've decided to hide out in the Azores for winter and make the run North in Spring. We're going to France and then up the coast to Norway. Ireland will be on the way down next fall.

    Did you know in Azores they have an entire pyramid, exactly the same as in Egypt, but it's under water, google it and you find the spot :)

    • @mattjohnson6716
      @mattjohnson6716 Před 5 lety

      That's it. Great spot if the wind is coming from the NE to NW, but it's open to the E to S and waves wrap around if straight out of the W. Still, there are not too many anchorages in the Azores, so we take them when we can get them.

    Did you ever get the water maker fixed? Did I miss it?

    • @mattjohnson6716
      @mattjohnson6716 Před 5 lety +1

      Nope. Since the Azores doesn't have a lot of anchorages, we've been having to use marinas a lot. So, we decided to pickle the watermaker since it wouldn't be used much anyway and get a new seal kit to replace in spring.

      You can't warn someone against and then not actually give a reason. certain medical issues is a tad vague. Care to be more precise and link to actual medical reports?

      The page I will link below says that 96% of people who have had LASIK are satisfied with the results. I'm sure Jessica will read up on it thoroughly, but it does make you think about that 4%. While some of those in the 4% just have starbursts or halos around lights at night, or dry eyes, or little problems, some have bad vision, even problems which can't be corrected, and they could be stuck with the problem for the rest of their life.
      Google Jessica Starr, a young TV meteorologist who made the national news in December, because she was young, beautiful, had two little kids, and killed herself. Apparently, one contributing factor was she had LASIK and it damaged her vision permanently. She was deeply distraught about it, as anyone would be who had her experience.
      I hate glasses and contacts (had to wear hard contacts because of astigmatism) so much that if I were young, and had money, I would have flown to Russia where they were doing the first radial keratotomy procedures in the 1970s for the correction of nearsightedness. Yet, LASIK, developed in the 1990s, is many times better and safer than that.
      There are ophthalmologists who will not do LASIK, even though it is easy money, because of that 4%, and it's not something they would risk on themselves. I have a friend who is in that category, although he's retired from practice now.
      Another thing to consider is just as LASIK is so superior to what they were doing before, it could get even better. And the longer you can wait, there will be more data as more people who have had LASIK approach old age, and how, if at all, it impacts their vision as they age.

      if thats the case could it be possible be that the uptick is caused by more people getting lasik as it becomes more affordable? im sure there was an uptick of peanut butter usage after it was made more available and affordable.

      The night life is great here, and many families walk the piers or boulevards after dinner to socialize. That's when they spotted our boat in the marina. Works for us :)

      In this case, Oscar was a CZcams follower that recognized our boat, so came over to knock on the hull and say hello. When he found out we'd be in the area a few days he invited us to his home for lunch, which was VERY kind. We also made a new friend, Carlos, because his brother-in-law is a CZcams follower from back in the States. 😀
