      Did you live on or off base? From the locals we spoke to, it seems times have changed and now all service members live on base and it's only a year or less posting.

      I had my family with me and we lived off base for about a year then in base housing. Its mostly a NATO run base now so its most considered a remote assignment , so no family. They have made so many new things for tourisim. Watching so many of the places you went, a lot has changed, but its still beautiful and a great place.

Your tours of the Azores and the Thai Islands just show what a beautiful world we live in. As you are now on your way to Norway via Ireland, will you sail to the North or South of the UK? Perhaps you could explore a bit of England in passing.

    Ireland must do's: Clifs of Mohair, (Stay In Doolin and see a sunset then drive along the coast.) Belfast to the Harlin and Wolf Ship yards, while there do the titanic stuff and play on the Nomadic, also while in belfast go diving lots of great sites off the coast but you wil need a dry suit. The giants Causway, Bunratty Castle, Blarney Castle, Go walk over the rope bridge to Curic Island, Stay atleast one night in Lough Rynn Castle, while there get a drink in the Duneon bar and walk the amazing grounds ,If out and about stop at one of the smaller castles, we went to Donigal for a hat and the castle there was a blast with guided tour for 8 eros, Spend a few days in Dublin go to Guniess for sure. Take a horseback ride. Go to Dingle and get Murphys ice cream, Go to Cobe and se the final departure point for the Titanic and Lusitiana. There is so much more but I would say these are the best of the highlits. one to avoid is The Rock of Cashell, it was not worth the money. The best thing you wil find in Irland is the people have a great time we did.

      Unfortunately we haven't even raised it fully under sail.... we'll unfortunately for the sail, but great for us. All of our sailing has been downwind since the Azores and the boat does better with just a reefed main and full yankee in those conditions. We're pretty cautious of a broach (had it happen a few times on the last boat), so really try to keep the sails as far forward as possible downwind.

    Brilliant videography!
    I can’t imagine the butterflies in your stomach when untying the lines for a long passage. You seem to handle it well.
    I noticed you unfurled the yankee before the Genoa. I too have a cutter rig and tend to unfurl the Genoa first and bring in the yankee first. Is there a reason for your method?

    • @mattjohnson6716
      @mattjohnson6716 Před 5 lety

      We only have a Yankee and a staysail. We typically fly the yankee is just about everything until about 18-20 AWS, then the yankee rolls in and the staysail goes out. We should sail them together more as a cutter...
      Matt

    • @donb4386
      @donb4386 Před 5 lety

      matt johnson Gotcha. My yankee is a high cut sail and is generally the first to be brought in. It generates a lot of power but is too high cut to be left up in a blow. I find a discernible performance boost with all the sails up, especially in light air, and it is so damn pretty when flying all three.

      @mattjohnson6716 Před 5 lety

      @@donb4386 We'd love to fly all sails more, but unfortunately the boat isn't as balanced as we'd like. It has a lot of weather helm, so we typically depower the main as much as possible... or run without it. If we keep the boat, I may add a bowsprit and try to move the sail plan further forward to combat the helm, or just live with it as we get enough speed with depowered main to get us where we want to go :) Our sistership said he sail less and less with the main, and often has only the staysail and yankee driving the boat. -Matt

    Do you guys have a heater? You may have mentioned it and I just missed it. What about a full enclosure for the cockpit for the higher lats? Just curious.

      We have a Sigmar 170 diesel drip that requires just a bit more to finish the install, but we have since decided to switch to a forced air unit (cheap chinese version). We don't have a good bulkhead to mount it, so it was going to have to be floor installed and sit in an area that is high traffic. We also want an adjustable thermostat since we've found that our little electric heater can roast us out of the boat at 2000 btu and the drip was 8,000 to burn clean (17k btu heater). I'm going to buy a second for reliability and carry our electric heater for back-up.

    What type of boom brake are you using and how do you find it during a normal tack?

    • @mattjohnson6716
      @mattjohnson6716 Před 5 lety

      We have a Walder Boom Brake and a Wichard unit. The Walder a much better brake since its control force is variable remotely from the cockpit. We use a 5:1 block and tackle to tighten its force to "lock" the boom in position. The only issue is in light winds; there is still a bit of drag and it may require manually moving the boom over. This didn't happen with the rope that came with it (stayed with the old boat), but I haven't been able to find a braid that is slippery enough without being too slippery.
      The Wichard requires you to go up to the brake and loop more more less line around and is now just sitting in the spare parts bin :)

      @MJSailing  Před 5 lety

      We could never really find much information on the monument itself...only that the spot was known for being a lookout. We didn't learn about Zora until after we'd already left the Cork area...which is too bad! 😥 If we're back that way this fall we'll have to give them a call.

    Hi, Do you a cat passport for your cat? And what route are you taking to Norway? Tim from Talavera

    • @mattjohnson6716
      @mattjohnson6716 Před 5 lety

      Yes. We got a pet passport the first time we came across the Atlantic, but Portugal didn't want to see a US one. The Portuguese vet issued a new passport once we arrived and she has been using that since. Really, no official has looked at it in years... they just ask if we have one, see the blue cover, and let us in.
      We are coming from Inverness Scotland and we may sail to Northern Scotland to Norway, or straight from there. The goal is to go as far North as we can, but we need a port that we can check in to on the Norway coast.
