      0 from the 39 juries.
      0 from the public vote.
      1992 1st: Ireland 2nd: United Kingdom
      1993 1st: Ireland 2nd: United Kingdom
      1994 1st: Ireland 2nd: Poland
      1995 1st: Norway 2nd: Spain
      1996 1st: Ireland 2nd: Norway
      1997 1st: United Kingdom 2nd: Ireland
      1998 1st: Israel 2nd: United Kingdom
      It went downhill after this with new countries entering and the introduction of televoting. The Soviet Union was dissolved in 1991 and so was Yugoslavia in 1992 and those two countries are now 22 countries. In 1991 there were 22 countries competing in the Eurovision and in 2019 it was 41 including Australia.
      Ireland holds the record for winning seven times and the United Kingdom holds the record for being runner up 15 times. Today Ireland struggles to get past the semi finals and the United Kingdom struggles not to finish last.
      1993 was riveting as the final 12 points were about to be awarded and if the United Kingdom got it would've beaten Ireland by one point. 1994 Riverdance was the interval act (their first ever performance) and Ireland won third year in a row and afterwards Europe wasn't talking about Ireland winning three years in a row but were talking about Riverdance and the interval act is normally forgotten about before the voting is over.

    Why do people feel the need to bash an entry just because someone else wanted it to win instead? Turkey was gorgeous that year, the song was ethnically true to the country, well constructed with a beautiful melody. It felt both ethnically ancient and yet modern, fun and fresh. However, the UK was a well deserved win that year, with a universal message everyone could get behind and a ridiculously catchy melody. There's a reason it was chosen as an anthem for this year's contestants to sing together, in the midst of this pandemic. It's a great, timeless song. Both songs are great, no need for people to get petty.

    • @gozdea5548
      @gozdea5548 Před 3 lety +10

      I respectfully disagree. UK used people's ability in understanding English . Turkey sent songs with universally good messages too (Halay 1984 (12th), Halley 1986(9th) ) it was barely in first 10 because no one in EU understood the language!!! Just by judging the music, Turkey's entry was far ahead of UK's and Ireland's in 1997 .

    • @jaydeebee3658
      @jaydeebee3658 Před 2 lety +6

      @@gozdea5548 I respectfully disagree with you. You make out that the UK is somehow working 'underhandedly' by singing in its native language and "using people's understanding of it". How utterly ridiculous a statement is that!!! GET OVER IT MAN!!! UK won, and by the largest margin with the format, as it had stood since 1975, at that time!!

    • @gozdea5548
      @gozdea5548 Před 2 lety

      @@jaydeebee3658 I didn't make that out, somehow you made that out !?! I didn't mean that UK did a deception or trickery..etc so the "underhandedly" is not an accurate neither fair word choice as a response to my comment. You are more than welcome to disagree; like me :), but defining my statement as "ridiculous" and your "need" to resort to "ad hominem" is unnecessary. I don't need to get over anything but with these responses you better stop acting like a hit dog.
      England/UK/US/Canada/Australia..etc are using the benefits of having a native language which is globally used and practiced for international communication. 200 years ago it was French, and since the second half of last century, it is English. That's a fact which is accepted my many native english speakers who don't know any 2nd language.
      On top of that, there was a rise of English pop and rock music culture beginning from 60s and till the end of 90s. Check the famous "world known" rock bands and their origins/language. This is definitely have a "positive effect" on the choice of the audience. They associate "the language" with popular musics. Here why you have the large margin in such songs.
      When the language barrier is gone, the upper hand of UK and Ireland is also gone. Among the eurovision songs of course they will chose this song as an anthem not because it is a "eurovision song" with universal message , but also "the consestants can sing it together" because it is in English. You think they could have used a french or German or serbian song with universal message???

      @@jaydeebee3658 🤣🤣🤣🤣 you really do want me to resent English!! :))) Thanks for exactly demonstrating your "hit dog" behaviour :)))))))))) No comment further needed for you!
      For the rest who read this comment line: there will always be a global language/s for the people around the world to communicate. It was Latin during Roman times, around middle east probably persian/arabic and then globally French and then English. Who knows what will be in upcoming centuries.. how can anyone resent this fact!!! Today, as a common lingua franca, English has the upper hand in every platform compared to other languages, and emotions are not necessary to state this "fact" !
      PS: Probably speakers of previous lingua francas (spanish, french, italian) might have resentment, but not me🤣

    They paid their dues as touring and recording musicians for many years leading up to this spectacular moment. Most of the time I watch and enjoy this without getting emotional but sometimes.....there's a few tears owing to the majesty of the performance and the sentiment in the song. More frequently, it gives me goose bumps because it is one of the best performances I will ever see and I love it every time I hear it. I saw KATW twice, once in 1988 and then in 1995, with both performances extremely polished. It came as no surprise that they were able to pull this off so brilliantly to walk away with the crown as the highest scoring act of all time ( I don't know if that has changed as I haven't watched the contest for over 15 years). I hope the band read the comments about them on You Tube so they know how much their fan base appreciates them as I for one believe they are one of the most unsung and underrated bands Britain has seen. I am glad to be among those who have been lucky enough to know the value of their music since the mid eighties.

      Greece and Cyprus are one people two nations and other countries exchange twelve points and vice versa like Moldova and Romania who are one people two nations since these two countries have Romanian as an official language and exchange twelve points and vice versa. Also Azerbaijan and Turkey are one people two nations and exchange twelve points and vice versa.

      To be fair to Terry, he did admit on separate TV shows discussing Eurovision that Greece and Cyprus were the only two countries who knew what each other were singing about and given all the block voting which dogged the contest in the years that lay ahead, those days of Greece and Cyprus voting for each other now seem so innocent.

      ***** I don't, we've won 5 times compared to 24 countries who have never won and 12 countries how have won once. We don't really deserve to have ANOTHER win unless we send an amazing sound which actually stands out (for good) among the other entries that year. Sweden has won so 2 times since 2000 because not only they are probably to be honest better song writers then us now in general but they still but in the huge effort from Melodifestivalen an deserve to win.
      Sorry I went on a bit but I don't think many in the UK actually knows what it takes to win and how much better we do then an awful lot better than many countries in the contest even today (think of countries which hardly get into the final like Israel who only got through with a unique and fun song and PORTUGAL who have entered 48 times and their best result it 6TH!!) Natasha Brooker Well done, finally someone is getting it! I get so frustrated listening to people in this country generalizing and consistently using the 'its all political' card as a means to excuse our years of failures in Eurovision in the 21st century. Did anyone read engelbert humberdincks comments in the papers the other day, basically describing the competition as a farce because of all the political voting, perhaps as a way of excusing Electro Velvet eaning a measly 5 points....seriously? Sorry Engel but I think your talking out of your own backside there, if that is the case then are you seriously suggesting that Sweden didnt deserve to win this year??......The UK have long lost the means of the winning formula, and if anyone at the BBC actually took the time to listen to Katrina & the Waves from 97, then they would understand what it takes to find a song that everyone in Europe will fall in love with. Lets make one thing clear, it's not all dead and buried for the United Kingdom in this competition, but in order to win a competition you have to compete. Not be silly and criticize and demonstrate that we don't take it seriously, if you don't take it seriously don't compete, if you do take it seriously, then send songs such as Jade's 'My time' in 2009, which also happened to muster up 9.5 million views that year and finish 5th.....It's not rocket science, we can do it! But we need to begin looking back to start moving forward!

You have everything it takes to be really good at this, but you fail to live up to our expectations. That’s why you are punished. You must get rid of the Wogan heritage. Although amusing, he has done more harm than you seem to realise. Make a fresh start, hire skilled people, and try to make things work again.
