If you've ever traveled anywhere outside of the US, Canada, or the UK, you've most likely ran into one of these types of tourists on your adventures through the Balkans, Thailand, Vietnam, or hell even India. As a frequent traveler, I've decided to make a list of the most annoying types of tourists out there and how to recognize them.

Basically these people are Americans who are obsessed with showing how special and unique they are for being an American tourist who *isn't* ignorant and who spends 90 percent of the conversation with any European talking about how much America sucks and how every European country is a paradise. Like I used to do this as a topic of conversation but literally no one cares. If you really like it just move there. I cringe at my past self doing this and ended up glorifying the bad parts of places that I loved. The reality is that every place has problems, but if you can love a place even with its problems, it is a good place for you.

You absolutely forgot Czech tourists. They come to any place on Earth, but especially to Slovakia and Croatia. If they happen to be in mountainous region, their death is almost certain, especially in High Tatras, where they come to die in droves. From late spring to early autumn they can be easily recognized as they are wearing socks in sandals. In their Billa/Lidl plastic bag they carry bread with schnitzel, canned food and beer - because who needs to waste the money on the local cuisine? They enjoy eating these rations near to the campfire, which they set up anywhere and this often results in burning of millions of km2 of local forests.

In 2021, there was this interesting moment on TikTok where some obnoxious British/South African lady was making these meanspirited and just plain ignorant videos about Americans as a people. What then ensued was practically THE ENTIRE AMERICAN DELEGATION OF TIKTOK - whether they were left or right, young or old, straight or queer, white, black or brown - uniting together to dunk on this moron. I see backpackers in the Netherlands pretty often, I usually pick them up when I'm by car they're usually pretty interesting people. We don't get a lot of tourism in my province, most people go to Amsterdam or Rotterdam, I'm always appreciative to see someone in my province so they get to see the big differences between life in Holland and the rest of the country.
I can also add that American tourists are REALLY LOUD, and whilst almost every American I've met was very kind and somewhat respectful, this always stands out and can be kinda annoying. Although, I have to go to Poland a couple times a year, whenever I see American tourists they have the habit to complain about it not being as luxurious as they hoped, or they confuse the country with the Soviet Union all together which is... funny and misinformed I guess?
I did notice as being the tourist myself in America I got questioned a lot how "great" I think America is, and its a fairly easy setup to become a bit snobby being from Western Europe. In the end I always said both systems are incomparable, atleast the taxes, housing prices and expenses for a car are really low there.
I love Chinese tourists the most to see, whilst they do fall in about every tourist trap, I feel like they're genuinely excited to travel. Rather than using it as a status symbol to post on their Instagram, you have hoards of them pointing at everything and being in awe and excited to see everything. I can't imagine how many gigabytes of photos they take home to share with the family, but they're more than welcome to come here ngl

    • @ChineseKiwi

Yep, most tourist trap places LOVE East Asian tourists on tour buses in general because *they spend* and are also usually genuinely interested in things. And they are usually in and out and mostly well mannered. Sure, you will have some misbehaving, but that is often due to ignorance rather than disrespect. In New Zealand, it wasn't the Chinese tourists that were looked down upon, it was often the Europeans in campervans, who dumped their garbage illegally in carparks (or worse like um.....'bodily processes') and 'freedom camped', meaning they parked up in some random public carpark and spent the night in their campervan there, and as stated, making a mess everywhere.

There are also the creepy old western men who take holidays in developing countries specifically to marry into local families. I have Filipino heritage, and whenever I go back to my mother's province to visit my relatives there are always some creepy/weird old foreign guys with much younger women. The only other foreigners you're likely to see are Morman missionaries, who are generally quite friendly but it is rather strange to see them walking along rural roads in the middle of nowhere, trying to convert people whose ancestors had already been colonised and converted to Catholicism centuries ago.

One time I was on a vacation in DC (from New York), and I was walking behind a slow-moving group of German-speaking tourists/expats/etc. I just wanted to move past them and said something like "Äh, 'schuldigung, bitte? Danke."
They politely moved out of the way, but the silence from them was deafening. I guess they just didn't expect a random American, in America, to speak up in German out of nowhere.
There was also the time I worked at a supermarket, and we had a couple German tourists/expats show up as customers. I was proud to have read out the final price and bid them "Auf Wiedersehen" in German. :D

I was working on a cruise ship several years ago so i met pretty much every nationality and tourist subgroup that exists - there are so many specific subgroups worth mentioning that this list can have at least 10 parts easily. In my opinion the best ones were - Texan Americans, devoted Christian Americans (these people seem so surreal, i cant believe they exist), Japanese, Latino people. Absolute worst - Mainland French, French Canadians, people from French Islands - pretty much all French speakers and honorary mention - Germans. Others were so so. I can elaborate if anybody wants (or cares).
