During the 90s, Serbia experienced a harsh systematic change and went through deep political & economic turmoil. However, at the same time, several cassette tapes started circling around the country of an unknown prank caller pranking an old man in a southern Serbian Village. These tapes became viral and changed Serbian meme culture forever, impacting a generation. This is the story of Serbia's most beloved video Series.

Honestly this could be a great idea for a video series . You could explain popular memes from different countries especially from the Balkans. As a greek i have to say that for as much common as we have with other Balkan nations the language is really the biggest barrier so this is an interesting idea

We had similar guy in Slovakia, was called Melíško. He died in 2013 (EDIT, as I remember it poorly), but still lives in the heart of many Slovaks.

BalkanBoy, as he said in that Vice podcast was a notorious prankster among his coworkers and friends. One of the examples he states is that a colleague of his left his car keys in his work desk. So when the man went out for lunch, BalkanBoy would take the keys, re-park the car like 2 spots to the side and did that everyday. One time he even parked it across the street. He had to stop eventually because the colleague seriously thought he was going insane because each time he left to go home the car was not where he originally parked it. What a wild guy.

Stojan is an icon of proper eastern european old men. Hope the guy left some family behind, and i hope they're doing well.
I once prank called my neighbour, a good but a simple guy, after he got his landline connected some 25 years ago, pretending to be a postal worker and asking him to measure how long the cable from the telephone to the pillar on the street is.
All panic broke loose with him and his wife and their son all running about trying to find the measuring tape, ladders and then figuring out along the way that it is rather difficult to do it precisely.. Meanwhile i was having a cup of coffe and watching all that through a window of my living room..
Some 10 years after that I have heard my neighbour's wife complaining to him how the damn washing mashine sucks and that they need a new one or a propper repair of the old piece of shit.. Being tight with the money as they were he was listening but I could tell that this enigma was something beyond his might.. He couldnt afford a new one and he well knew that the old piece of shit just cant be repaired back into decent life even by NASA.
So after a couple of days I called him on the landline pretending to be a radio host from a radio show in a nearby town..
Are you listening to radio "Grand" ?
And the listener answers YES so they get a prize... If its no then nothing..
So people from the area knew about that thing but most of times it was pre-aranged with family members of people working there making most calls.. But my neighbour didnt know that and they did listen to that station a lot since it played cheesy folk music..

Congratulations, you have won a new washing mashine. They only condition you have to meet is to be ready to pick it up from a "Robna kuca" (something like a mini mall) from a nearby town (some 20km away) in no more than 30 minutes.
I said my line, hanged up the phone and enjoyed the ongoing show watching it all through my living room window..
The panic, the "headless chicken" running about, the yelling..
They dont own a car, figuring out what neighbour to ask.. While I complained earlier that my car broke down and even drove around with my bike to prove it..
Hearing him cuss me out for it " Fucking jerk, he had to have his car break down today" listing out all the other neighbours
"This one hates us, I hate that one, I dont speak with that one... No, your cousin is too far away we wont make it in time, shut up damn woman, No not that prick he will intentionaly drive slow so we dont make it..
In the end they found a neighbour with the car and the race against time was ON.
I am just sorry I couldnt be in front of the Robna Kuca, and listen and see the confused workers telling him there is no washing mashine and no reward from the radio and that it doesnt matter he is just 5 minutes late there was nothing to win..
It took them an hour to explain and calm him down and even the direktor (chief manager) had to come and convince him.. since simple people trust more people with suits and ties who are in charge.. relict of communism..

It is surprising to me how much of the language I understand being Lithuanian. I became fluent in Polish and Russian in my childhood days, and learned the local Tuteysha dialect (a mix of Lithuanian, Polish, Ukrainian, Russian, Belorussian/Ruthenian).
I remember during my 8 years in London I would be listening to South Slavs on the London Underground having conversations and being so pleasantly surprised how much of these languages makes sense to me.

That made Balkan Boy think he had a cardiac arrest on the phone with him, and Balkan Boy did not call him for 5 months. Eventually, he called him and realised that he is still alive. Balkan Boy was wild.

The guy who pranked in those calls was a guest in some youtube podcast, although he didn't want to share his identity..
He is around 45 now and he is some kind of IT expert, he explained everything, how when he arrives at work , early in the morning with a coffee and cigarette he used to start pranking poor Stojan. 😇

That story reminds me of a thing we had in Russia. A guy would call up conscription centers at night and "talk" to the tired night guards with recordings of the other night guards from his previous calls. Most of the time the recordings were telling a certain "Head of the 2nd department" to go to the office 314. Usually it led to some interesting conversations, when the night guards would be very angry and scream random insults and basically do what Stojan did here. I dont think it was that popular, but fucking hell it was funny.
A bit later, the whole office 314 pasta became too well-known among conscription centers, so the author started using the audiobook about Schweik. Went on for a couple times and then just disappeared,

Yes, this was legendary back in the day. I remember that there was another Montenegrin guy who made epic phone pranks.
The best was called
"Kasete na grašak"
The story is that some guy had a video rental club. He also filmed himself "being intimate" with his wife and labeled the tape with some random words "Na grašak". Somehow that tape ended up in a his video club and everybody was renting it. Soon entire city saw the tape and everybody started calling him asking to rent the tape "Na grašak" The guy had a very extensive curse words vocabulary and was spewing profanities to the caller non stop.

This reminds me that we have something similar in Slovakia. There was this alcoholic named Ladislav Meliško whose neighbours living above him, I think it was in 2004, somehow removed mic from a cellphone, lowered it down from the bathroom and were recording his long, drunken, angry, vulgar monologues complaining mostly about his family members, the above mentioned neighbours and various other stuff. A few years later, when youtube became big, many people thought it was hilarious and the videos became famous. The most well known are when he wanted to make an omelet, but found out there was no onion left at home and another when he discovered ants coming from the neighbours upstairs. He died in 2013. To this day, I have one of his quotes set as a notification ringtone 😄

NO WAY SOMEONE MADE A VIDEO ESSAY ABOUT STOJAN ZAJEBANCIJE, that's awesome.
Used to listen to the full 1 and a half hour video with friends on discord, while casualy playing aram in lol, usualy at late hours. I really miss those times. We just played casualy on autopilot, and laughed while repeating the jokes most of the time. It wasnt forced or anything, we used to do it every once in a while, and thats why every time was equally enjoyable. The video made great memories, and deserves to be remembered.

I recently found your channel and I like it very much! This is awesome video on infamous stole telefonske zajebancije. Early 2000s were different period(and 1990s) when phone pranks were normal and fun stuff. Now its more of a harassment than prank, not really funny or creative. Hope it will be remembered as one of the best things on internet. Only when you listen to it you realise how good is to be from balkan.
