Can any tornado expert comment this? Why is it more frequent nowadays, that tornados happen on completely flat lands? To my knowledge, the hot and cold weather fronts kind of need to get "boxed in" by mountains that prevent the air to disperse sideways, e.g. the Rocky Mountains forming the tornado alley in the U.S.
I'm no expert, but I can see two reasons: 1) global warming = more heat = more energy in "the system". 2) everyone has a video camera in their pocket and video sharing has never been easier. 15-20 years ago only professional storm chasers and news crews could deliver video like this. And I doubt anyone has been professionally storm chasing in the Netherlands the past decades :)
I'm not an expert but the fronts you're talking about are huge, we're talking large wind systems on the scale of continents. I don't know much about the situation in Europe but I do know that the North Sea is exceptionally windy, and I'd imagine that a large front of wind coming north from the alps could collide with this in just the right way to create tornadic storms. You can see in this video, even, that the storm is forming at docks. If you want to see a prolific water-based tornado system elsewhere, just look at Florida. There they have large wind systems from both the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico, and that can create anything from small waterspouts to large tornadoes to massive hurricanes. TLDR: Think less about the local geography and more about the surrounding areas. Flat lands having tornadoes is just a symptom of being in the right place of a large system. Siberia is super flat but they don't get many tornadoes because they don't have the right wind systems for it, for example.
