    Always love that second pressing you do when first setting the welds. Goes from a 4 or 5 inch chunk of steel to a 2 inch just like that!

    • @thalastianjorus
      @thalastianjorus Před 2 lety +3

      Unlike the show Forged In Fire where they often attempt to weld at lower temp to save time - hence their horrid inclusions and flakes of steel a lot of times - proper welding temperature is _just_ before melting temperature. The steel is in a near molten state, teetering on the edge of a solid _(think insanely hot, thick jell-o),_ and as such is extremely easy to manipulate. You CAN use a hammer, as opposed to a press, but you risk a slightly glancing, or off center, blow... which completely breaks the initial soft weld. Not only do you then start all over - you may have just made a kg of, basically, scrap.
      If he's like me he turns his scrap back into rod/square stock for later projects - but scrap reclamation is tedious. Thus why it's one of the _first_ things I have an apprentice learn to do... I don't want to do it myself, and they learn hammer control, and welding temperature/temperature management, with the practice. It's better to just use a press, if you have one. Forging is far more about technique than power _(steel will mold almost like butter under your hammer at proper temperature - there is not need to strike hard unless you are still trying to shape after it has cooled below proper temp),_ and a press removes many variables that even the best smith cannot avoid at all times when it comes to forge welding.

      @@dansworkshop1972 I sprinkle flux (90% borax + 5% quartz sand + 5% charcoal powder) this is necessary for forging (forge) welding. The flux is alloyed with scale - the formed substance is sufficiently fluid and is easily displaced by deformation. In addition, the flux protects against oxygen and charcoal, carburizes the surface layer of metal - which lowers the welding temperature (if in brief).

      I don’t believe he sells them, where he is located in Ukraine, from what I’ve researched he has issues with the mail/post. Trust me, I’ve been trying to get my hands on one of his blades. If you find a way, please let me know.
