- Today I'm giving a tour of my Plein Air studio trailer, whilst getting it ready for the next Australian Outback painting trip.I will be discussing my thoughts on what I think is the the best palette knife for the job at hand. Also I'm, giving a demonstration on colour priming a canvas to match the painting subject.

I'm watching this from 2023 but really appreciate you showing how everything works!
Great! Thanks Joan😊
RME you read my mind, I've been analyzing your setup for a while now. Now all my questions are answered. Thanks for the excellent tutorial and guidance.
Glad you appreciated it Jeff! Thanks for the feedback. :-)
I really love these "behind the scene" videos. It's nice to see everything it takes to be ready to put paint to surface. I love learning about the prep work. Great video Richard!

Yesssss Great balls of fire. Enjoy your trip Richard and say hello to that wonderful scenery for all of us watching.
If I was brave enough, I’d love to tag along... but instead will christen my tarp between my raised garden beds and set up a camp.
You’ve set me up lots of how to hints in the process of your videos too. Loving your trips and art. 👍👍👍Have fun.
Hey fantastic! Thanks Hartley, will do!!! Cheers :-)
Hi Richard. Just watched this behind the scenes video of your mobile setup. Not only are you a very talented Artist. But a good carpenter And engineer the way you have designed and built everything yourself. A very unique and all round amazing person. And for being so generous in sharing all this for people like myself and others who admire your truly remarkable talent. Jim from England. Cheers 😊
That's not a knoife....now THAT's a knoife! love this channel. Thanks Richard.
Your ingenuity & handyman skills have always impressed me -- but now... We greet the master!
Thank you very much!
Such a joy to see this both entertaining and informative video. I admire your ingenuity in designing for durability, dust control, cooking, painting, and storage. Practical and unpretentious! Thank you for sharing. Wyoming, USA
Hey thanks for watching and enjoying Jeanie!!!
Plein air painting feels freeing but simultaneously can feel very confining for those of us who favor painting large. Add to that the challenges of the elements. This is an absolutely brilliantly designed setup. Thank you for creating this video and sharing your solutions. Now I’m dreaming of having my own VW camper version…
My pleasure 😊
Working my way through your fabulous videos. Thank for for the advice on palette knives I was getting frustrated using a knife on a canvas board I kept going over removing the palette knife marks because I was either not using enough paint or pressing to hard or both. Also trying to avoid muddying the colours. Your videos have answered some of these problems. Would be great if you could elaborate more perhaps in a tutorial video. Thanks once again Richard for all your CZcams masterpieces 👍
Great insight into your setup and all the more impressive you’ve designed and built a lot of the equipment yourself
Thank you kindly!
Thanks Richard, you've just explained what I've been looking for as far as knifes go. cheers
Generally artists are creative. You are creatvie as well as you have fore-sight. Thanks a lot for sharing all your tricks and tips.
Thanks for the look into your world and the talk about your knife choice.
No worries Robert! Thanks for watching!!!

Hello Richard I want to thank you for your inspiring painting and videos. You feel like a far away friend sharing adventures from a distant land. Awesome escapism from the cold bleak winter here in Scotland. Pete
You are very welcome!
Thank you, from Kenya, Africa. Nice t c close ups n excellent tips.
Many thanks Sohrab!!!
I got one more mad idea... Cover the box with insulation and waterproof canvas on top of it and an abstract landscape painting with acrylic :) You will blend into nature perfect :)
Man maybe that's a bad idea if you break down lol
Lol, sounds great!!!
Lol! Cheers omnesilere!!!
Just discovered your channel yesterday and have been binge watching them the last couple of days. I love your style of painting, kind of abstract but with implied detail here and there. Just the sort of style I would love to paint. Could I do the same effect with acrylic, or water soluble oil paints? And man you are a master of colour mixing, you get the right colour and value in mere seconds. I really enjoyed this behind the scenes video, that technique for transporting the large paintings the way the overhanging pieces of wood slot in like that is just genius.
Thanks for the distraction, was an interesting watch. What you were saying about the palette knife needing some flex; I tried a palette knife type approach on a miniature bust a few years back and had issues with not having enough give till I tried a silicone clay shaper. Just wondered if you had ever tried using any, some of the larger ones are about the same size as your smallest palette knife :)
Sounds interesting Conrad! I haven't thought of that before :-)
Hi Richard, an interesting video, thank you, now what is happening with the old Land Rover?
Thanks Ray! I love the old 4x4's!!!
Greetings, Richard. The preparations for your trips are also interesting to observe. I always enjoy seeing how an artist gets organized before starting a new work. By the way, how do you clean your rather large palette on the road ? Or do you take a different one each time ? Another question: Have you ever tried the water-based oil paint ? The cleaning of the painting media is much easier. - Have a good trip and stay healthy.
Hey thanks Cora! I just wipe the palette clean at the end of each painting. Haven't tried the water based oil, sounds interesting...! Cheers :-)
@@richardmusgrave-evans9886 Thank you so much for answering, Richard. Have a nice weekend.
few days ago,i tought that your life stylee its fantastic, and now i have the prove...fantastic stuff, please live just a few second for us in town..and continue to show the brethe of your country

Super Richard
Awesome setups specially canvas storage and priming with 2 colours as base background colour. Loved it ❤️❤️ love from india mate.
All my questions are answers to day.
Pl make a video on oil colours that you have specially those in cans . Love it
He has a link in the description, Art Spectrum is an Au art supply company. I'm considering getting some tins, seems like a great way to get over not putting enough out because you can put it back!
Thank you Debanjan! Yes, I can show the cans of paint and colours I use etc.Cheers mate!
It is a great way to go!!!
Great design and craftsmanship in the building of your trailer. Very impressive. I am curious as to why you use a screw to close the painting/canvas box instead of latches though.
Thanks! Something I have never finished, lol!!!
Thank you Richard. Looking forward to the next paintings. I know you do use a brush rarely but I have seen you use one to blend edges. Which brushes do you use? BTW, I had the closed captions on when listening and when you said "wack, wack, wack" describing the use of the knife, the captions said "quack, quack, quack" LOL!!
Funny Anna! I use Art Spectrum Brushes!!! Cheers :-)
This is a real painting factory on wheels
Cheers mate, it works well!!!
Many thanks 🙏
Amazing and I thought my easel was a lot to carry 😅
Lol, yes 🎨👍😊
Fantastic Richard! What a setup. I have one question that has been bothering me for a while - you always seem to start with a clean palette. Do you actually clean it all off between trips, and if so how? Do you varnish the wood first? (I use large wood palettes like you also, but mine get permanently messy!)
Thanks Darryl, I clean my palette constantly, never letting it dry! It started off as 5mm marine plywood that I put a clear varnish over! Cheers 😊
🤙
Many thanks!!!!!
Feliz pintura :-)
Maybe some insulation inside that would stop the heat inside the metal box? It makes it more expensive I know :)
Heat dries the paintings though.
Could be an idea, It can get a little warm in there!!! Cheers :-)
One bonus, the heat does :-)
I want to be you when I grow up. So where do get an awesome hat like that? 🤠
Lol! Many thanks :-)
Lifetime achievement you just showed us to make easier for everyone to get together things .

😁👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🤩❤❤❤❤❤❤✌✌✌✌✌✌
Question! Why was your trailer hitch-first under the carport? 🤔 I can only see one reason.
