- Today I give my faithful Border Collie 'Bella' the centre stage and paint her portrait! I will be using oil paint and palette knifes, applying the paint thickly and spontaneously.

That is absolutely beautiful. When I saw the title I thought "no way is his technique going to lend itself well to a border collie portrait" And then the final product conveys all of the alert nervous energy of the breed in a way I didn't think possible. It's like the painting is moving when you look at it. Such a talent....nice job.

Nice dog Richard. I enjoy the way you zoom in to the surface at the end, something which we're all led to do when looking at real paintings before stepping back again to see the full representation - confirming that all painting is abstract in the end as it all just comes down to bits & pieces of paint, something which any serious artist should realise early on. Keep up the great work

Hello Richard. Well done, you have captured the personality of your dog very well: all her senses on the prowl. The background is really very beautiful with this light shining behind Bella and I prefer what you got on the right at the end over what appeared before. Every single time I watch you start with random (not random) blocking out of colour then boom! It transforms into something wonderful.

Greetings, Richard. As I love dogs, I was very curious to see how you would do it with the big palette knife. I like the green, yellow and grey tones, a successful composition of the surrounding colours. You've also done a good job with the fluffy fur and the attentive look of the animal. Superbly done. G'day mate, what a beautiful girl she is and so appropriate to capture her spirit. It's a delight to watch you mix paint and explain the intricacies of how each colour behaves when mixed or set beside each other. It is great and essential learning and I always focus intently on what you do. Bravery is needed sometimes in the strokes but there is no certain death for failing. You’re a gentleman and it shows all the way through your videos Richard and that makes them special to follow them through as well.
Great camera work grabbing those tones it captures, and on your canvas, adding atmosphere to what you are doing.
One day it would be nice to learn how you edit your videos to the finished product, just in a simple way, not a major lol.

Richard is a most unusual artist! scratches, blothes, paint strokes and he comes up with a creative and stunning drawing. Where is he from? Where is his studio? is his work for sale? As a fellow artist, he blows my mind with his unusial ways. IF HE WAS IN A SALON IN nEW york, he could get thousands for his paintings! maby he does anyway!

I love it!! When did you refine the dogs eye?? Did you use a smaller palette knife? I went back and couldn't find that part. I have made huge strides in my work since I started using palette knives. Thank you for your videos. They help me be more impressionistic but I do stray back to more realism by nature!!

Love it, and again your painting process is dynamic and inspiring. Would a landscape be ruined by the small figure of Bella in the scene? One of these days I hope you’ll be inspired to do a painting of yourself and Bella in the field together.

Whilst I am not subscribed to your channel, I have however,
Watched a number of your tutorials, many of them based on your landscape trips in the outback. I find your use of the large flat pallette knife absolutely amazing. The paintings you produce are phenomenal, the the initial outlay of the painting appears somewhat messy and unrecognisable but then something magical begins to takes place and suddenly the images appear to make graphical sense. It's as if you are constructing paint almost like those magical eye pictures.
Incredible stuff.
Nevertheless Richard I would to know what happens to your paintings after you have finished them?
Could you do a video showing that side of your business as well? Do your paintings go to galleries or private collectors, or do you have your own gallery or sell online for example. Also how do you frame your paintings, wrap them and present them to your outlets?
It would be good to learn from you about this side of your skills as well as seeing more of your amazing painting tutorials.
