Russian history, unlike Ukrainian, does not share much details about this. Otherwise, Kremlin would have to admit, that USSR destroyed a lot of the population in these regions. And it doesn’t matter if it was due to an error in calculating the necessary food products (as some historians explain it), or specifically - to destroy the national population. The fact is, that people died. Not a very convenient truth for people, who still trust that USSR was a good country.

Tsardom of muscovy is the tsardom born in Moscow. The grand duchy of Muscovy was the state that gained supremacy and overthrew the tatar yoke and consolidated power in Russia. Effectively a kingdom of Russians, even if still called grand duchy. Then it'd become a tsardom.

Calling Russia an empire is a big oversimplification imho, so is not calling hundreds of FOBs the US has in the world even somewhat “imperial” (orders of magnitude more than Russia has). So as you rightly pointed out - history isn’t static and therefore judging one country’s “imperial” ambitions using old standards of measurements may not be accurate. As for the age of the Russian state - the cultural, historical, political and other “baggage” that moves from one iteration of the Russian state to another is so massive and obvious that imho it is quite fair to say that the country is more than 1000 years old. Russia has had so much perturbation in its long history that it of course is nowhere near as linear and clean as the US for example, but so are the vast majority of European states - France, Germany and others. There is history to support that, lands to support that, culture to support that and etc.

Hey guys! I've been watching your channel for several years now and I like what you do. I was confident in your impartiality and independence of your agenda. Before this video.
The fact is that I myself live in Russia in the Bashkortostan region and about 50% of the facts from what you say do not correspond to reality.
    1. No one infringes on Bashkirs. Yes, Bashkir language becomes optional. But this is because in Russia, republics have their own ethnic groups (Bashkirs, Russians, Tatars, and so on) and in each republic they study their national language as an additional one. In Bashkortostan, it is the Bashkir language, and at the same time there are special schools where this language is mandatory. If you want, you can enroll your child in this school and he will know the Bashkir language perfectly. In other schools, this is optional. Russian russians can also choose which language to learn: Bashkirs learn Bashkir, Tatars - Tatar, but at the same time, they all necessarily learn Russian, because Russian is a mandatory language in the country. No one with a machine gun stands and does not force you to learn this or that language. Here you are not completely immersed in the topic, our system is somewhat different.
    2. Bashkirs voluntarily joined Russia (this is the official version). But yes, some fought for independence (some tribes), as there was a split among the Bashkirs themselves. When the region became part of Russia, Niko did not go and kill Bashkirs just like that. It's just that Russians began to organize fortresses on their lands to protect their borders, and not all Bashkirs liked it.
    3. The situation in the region is calm. Yes, there are social movements, but they include not only Bashkirs, but also Russians and Tatars. Certainly there are no armed groups - that's complete nonsense. The fact that the president's title was taken away from the president - it was in all republics (both Tatarstan and Chechnya and others). No one was against it. I travel a lot around the region and travel and no one throws stones at me, because I am Russian))))) . On the contrary, the region is loyal to Moscow and Putin, at least look at the results of the elections by subjects.
    4. About the church and the mosque. The church is being built because churches in Russia are built with donations to Orthodox churches and money from the Russian Orthodox Church, and mosques in Bashkortostan are built with republican money. The fact that the mosque is not being built is a problem of the complexity of construction, high cost and a bit of corruption. In our region, Russians and Bashkirs live in peace. I have many friends, Russians and Bashkirs and Tatars. No one looks at each other askance.
    5. Yes, indeed, the Americans helped the Bashkirs during the Civil War. Their headquarters were located in the center of the city. Now this building is also there, very beautiful. At that time, not only in Ufa there was such a headquarters, but also in other cities of the empire, it was a difficult time, and we are grateful to everyone for their help. But food was taken not only from Bashkirs, but from all regions of Russia. It was called "prodnalog".
    6. Bashkirs now will not be able to seize power in the region by force - this is complete nonsense. Bashkirs make up only a third of the inhabitants of the entire region. and they don't have weapons, in Russia you can't just go and buy weapons - it's against the law.
    7. No one sent only Bashkirs to war. In Bashkortostan, not only Bashkirs live (Bashkirs are only a third of the republic). Many people went voluntarily..
    8. There is no sense in the independence of Bashkortostan. Everything is peaceful here, everyone is happy with everything. Yes, there is a lot of oil in Bashkortostan, but it was not stolen, and Bashneft was voluntarily sold.
Tourism and manufacturing are actively developing in the republic now. Come to Bashkortostan, it's very beautiful here, beautiful nature and friendly people. and everything is not as you describe.

I don’t know for sure, but I’m almost sure that this republic is subsidized, like Chechnya and Dagestan and other republics. That is, they consume more than they produce. And Moscow, as a regional entity, gives them subsidies. Of course, we can say that the capital accumulates federal money, but look at Russia’s transport system and industrial base. And don’t say that Moscow feeds from everyone and is fattening. Those regions are less developed, and money is given for their development. If you want to say, of course, resources are flowing to Moscow and with their help development is taking place. Ie the strength and freedoms afforded in localized central Asia. Most of these states are landlocked so the silk road and belt to their south offers some opportunities but also a tendency to keep them captive . These are the prior khan problems newly revealed. A kind of trade zollverein might unite loosely these nascent states. The leap from tribe to nation is big the leap to a united states or euro union bigger or to socialist soviet union the biggest?

Okay, as someone who's actually from Russia and have been in opposition for a significant amount of time - I have to say, that any separatist movements with significant traction, besides those in parts of the Caucasus (namely - in Chechnya, and the majority of its representatives are outside of Russia) have little to no traction and representation. If you look at the population of Bashkortostan - it's about a third for the population of Bashkirs, about a third of Tatars and about a third of Russians, with some minorities sprinkled in, and the claims of forced Russification of the region is more or less overblown, where most of the language is not being as widespread because of the lack of teachers (which also happens with some Russian schools in Samara, for example, with Russian language), not even to mention, that literally the biggest discourse in Russia right now, besides the war, is migrants, which we have about 11.7 million of (at least those, that have officially registered), and fears of islamification of regions like Moscow and Saint Petersburg, and the government is doing nothing about that. The biggest amount of political prisoners in Russia are actually Russian Nationalists, that displayed disdain for putin's anti-Russian policies. So I'd take movements like that, as well as RVC\Freedom of Russia with a huge pinch of salt, since it's not very clear, who they represent, and if you look at their general following on Telegram, for example, it's usually a very small number of people, with very little activists on the ground, most likely, since every case, that's happening around someone like that, instantly becomes news - and we've seen none thus far, when it comes to Bashkort (whereas we've seen some for freedom of Russia and RVC).
I'd say that, before making videos like that, you need to talk to people, that'll give you various perspectives from the opposition, not only specific groups of liberals and ethnoseparatists. Talk to Svetov, talk to Anti corruption foundation, talk to Anti government nationalists like Demushkin to find materials to research on that, because most of the stuff you're getting in English is a bunch of biased garbage, that rarely gives a well-rounded perspective on Russian opposition politics, which is extremely complex.
