I was in Ufa in 2021 (Folkloriada), and I really enjoyed my stay. It did not feel like Russia at all (compared to Moscow). It was such a different experience. I am a slav and the place didn't feel slavic at all, more like a post communistic asian state

I want to correct you a little, within EU4, Bashkortostan mostly lies in the province of the same name, Bashkortostan, which produces wool. And only part of present-day Bashkortostan belongs to the gold-bearing province of Bashgird, and another part of the western province, but I don’t remember its name

I think you might find an eager audience for more videos like this on the individual republics inside Russia and their actions/plans in relation to the Ukraine war. E.g. Tatarstan and Dagestan, and probably many more we've never even heard of.

There is no reason for China to take territory by force when they can economically dominate it. They need Siberia for the resources, if Russia sells the resources for below market rates then China has no need to risk nuclear war over them. Much less fight insurgencies etc.

Around 1740, Bashkirs declared Abulkhair Kazakh Khan as their Khan. Moreover Bashkirs and Kazakhs are very close nations with similar culture, language, and ancestry. Languages are so similar, that kazakhs and bashkirs can fluently speak with each other

According to the 2021 Russian census, the population of Bashkortostan is only 31.5% ethnic Bashkirs, while Russians make up 37.5% of the Republic. Assuming that this census is correct, how would Bashkortostan ever gain the support of its people?

Could you provide a source list for the mention of the famine in Bashkortistan? I tried both the Bashkiri wiki, English wiki, and Russian wiki and either don't understand enough of the language or find no mention of it.

You're right, there wasn't "famine in Bashkortostan", just google it like "Famine in the Volga" (Volga region). This region includes more republics, not only Baskortostan (as you already answered above).
Russian history, unlike Ukrainian, does not share much details about this. Otherwise, Kremlin would have to admit, that USSR destroyed a lot of the population in these regions. And it doesn’t matter if it was due to an error in calculating the necessary food products (as some historians explain it), or specifically - to destroy the national population. The fact is, that people died. Not a very convenient truth for people, who still trust that USSR was a good country.

This is an anti-Russian propaganda channel. Bashkortostan does not even show a lick of separatism from the Russian Federation.
The USSR was voluntary, it's just that local communists in these nations seized control then formed the ussr.

Tsardom of muscovy is the tsardom born in Moscow. The grand duchy of Muscovy was the state that gained supremacy and overthrew the tatar yoke and consolidated power in Russia. Effectively a kingdom of Russians, even if still called grand duchy. Then it'd become a tsardom.
Tsardom of muscovy is just to specify given that there is also the tsardom of Bulgaria. You could call it the muscovite or MOSCOWite tsardom, as you'd prefer.

Such an event would only occur in a broader collapse of the state, putting tens of millions of people in misery, poverty, and wars over petty national squabbles

Calling Russia an empire is a big oversimplification imho, so is not calling hundreds of FOBs the US has in the world even somewhat “imperial” (orders of magnitude more than Russia has). So as you rightly pointed out - history isn’t static and therefore judging one country’s “imperial” ambitions using old standards of measurements may not be accurate. As for the age of the Russian state - the cultural, historical, political and other “baggage” that moves from one iteration of the Russian state to another is so massive and obvious that imho it is quite fair to say that the country is more than 1000 years old. Russia has had so much perturbation in its long history that it of course is nowhere near as linear and clean as the US for example, but so are the vast majority of European states - France, Germany and others. There is history to support that, lands to support that, culture to support that and etc.

Any territory within the Russian Federation that wants to be free only has to do two things, preserve their culture and have lots of babies. The Russians aren't replacing themselves, each generation there will be fewer of them. Eventually they won't have enough people willing to risk themselves to hang on to their imperial conquests. The Bashkirs have already waited a few centuries, a few decades more should be enough to restore their independence.
the Bashkirs have the same fertility rate as the rest of Russia otherwise you would see a booming Muslim population and a declining Orthodox or Russian population. Russia is going downhill with the minorities who themselves arent having babies constantly reenforcing the 70% to 30% Russian to non Russian population ratio even as Russias population shrinks overall the proportion has been the same since 1990.

Thanks for this video. It would be interesting to watch episode about Kazakhstan from your point of view.
Kazakhstan was the most developed and democratic country in the world, but then the bad Russians came and started destroying schools, hospitals, institutes, factories, starved them, forbade them to speak their own language, brutally suppressed uprisings, and siphoned off all the resources. Kazakhstan did not participate in the collapse of the USSR because there was simply no one to do it. This is such a sad story.
I hope one day autonomic republics in Russia will get their independece and stop the russification policy towards minority nations.

Fascinating topic. I'd never heard of Bashkortostan before watching this video, to be honest. It's interesting to hear about the language repression- lately I've been learning more about the Russian Empire and the USSR, and it seems like repressing languages and culture was something Moscow pushed onto most of its subjects/territories.

Real true story, moscow supressed so many nations for centuries that Georgian, Armenian, Kazakh, Bashkir, Tatar, Estonian, etc and even defacto close to the Russian and easy to replace languages like Belarusian and Ukrainian exists while Welshian, Scottish, Cornish and especially Irish defacto are dead. Wouldn't say a word about cherokee or Navajo. Or about German, Jewish group, Polish, Russian, French, Irish again, Spanish and etc that were the first languages for about 80% or more of who came to the US in 19th-20th centuries and why their descendants cant pronounce a single word on their parents tongues. However, in big cities exist only ethnical tension, because there are a planty of hiden intolerance towards non bashkort citizens even in big cities, where mostly ethnical russians and tatars live. For example it is much harder to get into Ufa's medical university if you are not a bashkir

According to the 2021 census only 1,25million bashkirs live in bashortostan, and 1,5million russians. Well there are another 1,5million bashkirs in other russian regions but still as of now bashkirs are a minority in their region.

Okay, as someone who's actually from Russia and have been in opposition for a significant amount of time - I have to say, that any separatist movements with significant traction, besides those in parts of the Caucasus (namely - in Chechnya, and the majority of its representatives are outside of Russia) have little to no traction and representation. If you look at the population of Bashkortostan - it's about a third for the population of Bashkirs, about a third of Tatars and about a third of Russians, with some minorities sprinkled in, and the claims of forced Russification of the region is more or less overblown, where most of the language is not being as widespread because of the lack of teachers (which also happens with some Russian schools in Samara, for example, with Russian language), not even to mention, that literally the biggest discourse in Russia right now, besides the war, is migrants, which we have about 11.7 million of (at least those, that have officially registered), and fears of islamification of regions like Moscow and Saint Petersburg, and the government is doing nothing about that. The biggest amount of political prisoners in Russia are actually Russian Nationalists, that displayed disdain for putin's anti-Russian policies. So I'd take movements like that, as well as RVC\Freedom of Russia with a huge pinch of salt, since it's not very clear, who they represent, and if you look at their general following on Telegram, for example, it's usually a very small number of people, with very little activists on the ground, most likely, since every case, that's happening around someone like that, instantly becomes news - and we've seen none thus far, when it comes to Bashkort (whereas we've seen some for freedom of Russia and RVC).
I'd say that, before making videos like that, you need to talk to people, that'll give you various perspectives from the opposition, not only specific groups of liberals and ethnoseparatists. Talk to Svetov, talk to Anti corruption foundation, talk to Anti government nationalists like Demushkin to find materials to research on that, because most of the stuff you're getting in English is a bunch of biased garbage, that rarely gives a well-rounded perspective on Russian opposition politics, which is extremely complex.
