Nobody thought her protest of Catholic Church child sex abuse was cowardice. They reacted as they were told to by authorities that is was blasphemy, because they'd rather worship some weird old Nazi man in an ornate dress than listen to the God they claim to understand.

I don't think the world thought it was cowardice but rather the world (not the world but the media and those reading/viewing the media at the time) just didn't know how to deal with it. I can't imagine the outcry/negativity and hatred if that SNL episode happened in the day of social media without any context. At the end of the day, her voice and music should be her legacy, not any perceived controversial actions. One of the best voices ever.

The brilliance of making a song about England's brutal oppression of Ireland ("your rage is like a fist in my womb"), and the hope for peace and dialogue ("Oh let glorious love be done"), be in the form of a song about a man and a woman. Rest in power to a true artist, radical, and iconoclast whose voice carried the souls of her ancestors with whom she is now reunited.

A real Irish artist, like Dolores and many more. This is so heart-wrenching, but so cleverly written about when Ireland was invaded by the British, described in a metaphor as a young couple, the Irish being a young girl who was in a relationship with a British soldier and fell pregnant with him, and he walked away and left her alone heartbroken. ( the official video depicts this, this live version just reflects her pain and heartbreak so much )

@@Anonymous-sf5qj wrong, she was not totally insane, and she also dealt with her own child abuse from her mother & also losing her mother when Sinead was 18.
"She criticised child abuse within the Church but did not have the guts to name the homosexual fifth column within the clergy as the perps."
" criticised" what did you expect her to do to stay silent about the abuse, btw it's never been just the abuse of boys, it's child sex abuse it wasn't committed only by homosexuals, girls were molested by the Clergy as well. You talk as though you think rape is sex, it's violence.
She believed in religion inculcated into it by family, maybe you don't know that the 3 abrahamic religions all stem from one, it does and one who think they're better than the other two, a myth they created, she believed so she sought peace in the wrong place, religion.
She had every right to renounce her religion or to become a priest if she so wanted and could.

I'm half Irish, half Yorkshire. My father was Irish, I share his humour, passion and forgiveness. I've taken time to study irish history. The vast majority of English people know nothing of Irelands past or the way her men, women and children were treated. If they went away and educated themselves instead of relying on only what they are told. . .then they would truly understand 800 years of Irelands history. . .as i do now.

This song breaks my heart as an Englishman.
And the reason why it does is because it doesn't strike me as a love song from an abused Irish woman to her hard English boyfriend...
...but from the battered Republic of Ireland to the hard United Kingdom. From Sineaed's country to mine.
Our two countries are mostly fond of each other, there's a lot of love between our peoples, but... let's just say that we, the British have fone a fair amount orf bad things to the Irish for many centuries and we, the British, tend to gloss over it or forget it ever happened.
Ther Irish don't forget, they just don;t holf onto their hate (for the most part)
But for us, it's all bygones y'know, in the past and a little too awkward to dwell on. Even though the consequences of all that ecgoes down even to today.

Good for you mister Jim Cambell, I do understand your point of you, but be aware that you are not responsible for your father's "duty", irish people have suffered a great deal, and it's still going on, differently, certainly, but it is still there, tensions between two communities. I , for my part, would like to see the whole of Ireland reunited, that's my wish. I've lived long enough in Northern Ireland to have known what life looks like over there, I can never forget, nor forgive the massacres perpetrated on innocent people who were just eager to simply live decently. My only hope is to see Irish people live freely, on their own land, carry on speaking irish gaelic which is originally their language and keep their own culture. Perhaps, one day battles will be over, but I have doubts...
