SHE WAS A DANCE INSTRUCTOR AND DID CHOREOGRAPHY FOR MOVIES
She was also a featured dancer in a lot of movies in the 60s, including some of the Elvis movies. Check out her channel.
Locker Dancers, right?
She was 39 when she did this. To the general public she’s best know for this but she is an absolute dance legend, she has been a dancer and choreographer since the 1960’s and she’s been in all kinds of movies.
There’s not many people who can say they were in an Elvis Presley movie and a Quentin Tarantino movie but she can.
She was also in Easy Rider..... check it out. Bet you didn't know that
@@scottgautier1373 I knew it! I saw her in the market one time. She kept her skin white as a ghost like ivory
@@scottgautier1373 I was just about to say the same thing!
Which Elvis movie?

Toni was 40 years old when she did this video. That was her actual cheerleader uniform from her cheerleading days in high school at Las Vegas (NV) high school.
38
@@MsLuvmusic81 Close enough.
Well Dang!
She was 38.
Wow she was 40, looked dang good , she in her early 80s now in 24, hard to believe how time flys
You know what? I had a really hard day. Just wanted to crawl in bed and try to sleep. But your joy made me smile and now I feel better. Thank you for sharing yourself with us.
My pleasure
Ahh- the earlier MTV beginning days- loved this song as a young girl- 💜✌️✨
Quentin Tarantino uses her for his movies.
czcams.com/video/tbnxe5p8oSI/video.html
When MTV actually played music vids.
YES YES YES!! Loved this growing up on Mtv 🥰
My first real crush was a cheerleader and it was her favorite song so off course it quickly became mine
Still love it.
She is actually a renowned choreographer. She has 2 other albums than the one this came from. Her songs are very danceable. Listen to "Over My Head". It was a big dance hit. Also, Shopping A to Z.
the coolest thing about this video to me is all the cheerleaders are real cheerleaders from her high school. everyone thinks cheerleaders are tiny like Toni, but who do you think is at the bottom of the pyramid? the big girls! the strong girls!
No. They are not from her high school. I forget from where, but they are a cheerleader group from a California High School. If you notice, the uniform colors do not match Toni's.
@@whazzuphere I think I heard her say the cheerleaders are from Arcadia high school in Arcadia, Ca. It kind of makes sense if the video was shot in Los Angeles.
Lol on this take- my youngest was cheer, and the STRONG stable one lifting singlehanded when others let go or slipped.
She was a size 00 and barely 5' tall while cheering around the same time this was made by a decade or so. She just had natural tensile strength and strong hands.
Even after 3 kids and in her 30s now she may be a 4 or so and over 5'10" - and still strong grip and biceps and thighs naturally.
School cheer squads are a cross section of their local interrsted kids- and some have sturdier builds the average and you see that in this Arcadia cheer team

She is/was friends with Micky Dolenz, this song was about him. She was in the Monkees movie Head (which also had a young actor named Jack Nicholson)!
Nicholson also co-wrote and co-produced that movie.
This was a cover of "Hey Kitty" by Racey. The song wasn't about Dolenz, Basil just changed the name.
@@alanjones4358 True - this was denied by Basil, who has said she did not know Dolenz that well.
OK, I had read that it was about him.
Reading this, no wonder this sound more or less like 60's garage pop, complete with bit thin Farfisa or Vox organ sound. :) Please check out "96 Tears" by Question Mark & The Mysterians for comparison. :)
Great song. Now you need to follow it with Weird Al's Parody, Hey Ricky
When I hear Ricky I think of The Secret Life of Pets.
Ricky is definitely a hit.
Oh Mickey! They still play this at the pep rally’s. Lots of energy, cool little song 🎶
Hahaha as this closely resembles my name. I copped it heaps at “school dances”. How are ya mate? All well on your side of the pond I hope.
@@horsefootrot8044 Hi, how are you? Haven’t seen you in a while. I was off here for about a month breaking records here in Louisana with hurricanes. 6 in the last 4 months. We had the eye of Zeta here in New Orleans about 3 wks ago. Had some damage but could have been worse, some are still without power for 4 months now. I hope everything is good your way. I’ve missed my little family here when I wasn’t able to get on. Covid restrictions are starting to ramp up again here, how is that situation in your area? Well, at least we can escape all that for awhile here & just enjoy music & great people like you my friend 🤗
Always loved this song. She's well into her 70's but still dancing and rockin her own style!
Check out the song ''hey kitty'' by the English band ''racey'' to see where Tini Basil took the song from...
As a former cheerleader, always going to be a favorite
Tony Basil is a choreographer, and if this is her only hit, be happy she started with such an outstanding performance. I remember when this came out. I think I saw it on the "Solid Gold" show, late 70s or early 80s.
She’s still dancing till this day💯 that’s bad azz👊
Toni Basil & Don Campbell founded the Lockers, an awesome dance group in the '70's. Check them out. You'll be sold. Toni is badass. They all are!
Toni Basil was in the iconic movie “Easy Rider”
Five Easy Pieces too.
Attack of the 15 foot teenagers , or something.
This is so 80's LOL I use to sing this song to my son "Nicky" until my son told me to stop
"MOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMM!!" LOL
@@carabeingblue4016 and he said my name is not Nicky it is Nick!!!LOL
That's so hilarious!! Just like a mom 😇
Watch the actresses from BRING IT ON at the end of the movie. They can really dance to this song, especially Gabrielle Union.
Yep!! Here we go!! (Second - Hey Donna!) When this came out it was HUGE!! I was like 12-13! 💜✌️✨
The 80's were and still is RAD!😁✌
I love to quote " The 80's were like morning in America!" From American Horror Story 1984!
✌❤🎶
Me too 12-13! Yikes 😬
I was dating a guy named Mickey when this song came out. He was thrilled. 😀👍
My bro was the captain of the football team, dating the head cheerleader, and named "Mickey" when the song came out too.
Me too! But, he loved it! 😊😊🧡
Your face was to die for 😂😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂
You couldn’t escape this song when it first came out. Was on the radio like every hour.
“It’s guys like you Mickey...” She’s most definitely singing about a guy. A guy who is popular and pretty, and everything is always about him.
Mickey Dolenz
This song brings on so many memories! My brother was born right around when this song came out. When he was fuusy, my sister and I would sing and clap this song to him.. He got the biggest kick out of it!
She also was part of the Pop Lockers that would be on Soul Train late 70's or early 80's. .she's amazing.
Ugh ! Finally someone in the comments mentioned this ! They had when she was born , who the song was about , and her age .
I'm not done ! What movies she was in
What dances she choreograph , but never did anyone I saw in the comments talk about her being in Lockers with Shabadoo , and all the great black artists she worked with . If you think I'm saying that a lot of these people in the comments are mildly racist , yes . If I'm wrong , then how can you know so much about Toni Basil , and just exclude that from ur comments . I bet you that would be some of the most important things she would talk about .
Welcome to the biggest earworm of the 1980s. Fun facts, those girls were a real cheerleading squad and Toni's cheerleading outfit is hers from her high school days. Useless info that will forever be stuck in my brain from the old "pop up videos" days.
Yes in the 90s VH1 used to do pop up videos and they had a show called the big 80s where they played all 80s music ... good times
And she could still fit in it after all those years? Goes to show the calories she burns of dancing.
This is gonna get stuck in your head

Played Mary in 1969's hit movie "Easy Rider."
"Shoppin' A To Z" and "Over My Head" were minor Hot 100 hits in 1983 and 1984, respectively.
She was on SNL before she hit the Hot 100 ... looking on CZcams for it, not finding it, but other TV appearances are on CZcams.
She was a choreographer to the stars, including Bette Midler and David Bowie.
I loved this song! Toni Basil was a very successful Dance Choreographer and singer! This was her biggest hit in the eighties!❤️❤️
This song was the best
Everyone in my elementary school loved this song #80skid
The great Toni Basil. Guess how old she is in this video?
37. *edit corrected age.
Toni is still an active choreographer, even at the age of 77. She's done a ton of major film choreography. Including 2019's Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.
This video and song is still what she is remembered for by most.
Great reaction as always. Until next time keep safe, and keep on keeping on.
Much like Debbie Harry from Blondie. While she was in the music business from a young age, she's 75 years old now and was in her mid to late thirties when she became famous. She was 40 years old in 1985.
37
@@rullmourn1142 Damn my math! Thank you for the correction.
@@thewheel73 ..You're welcome.
@@JennRighter I just learned some years ago how old Debbie Harry was at the height of Blondie's success. It was pretty surprising in a good way. I never thought about her age in the early 80s, and I was only a preteen then, but I just assumed she was in her early twenties.
But there was no internet back then, so it was pretty easy to keep personal information private.
Loved the expression on your face when this song first started, and then you ended up totally into it and dancing.Your awesome Jay! Thank you for brightening our day..Love this Catchy tune!
This song will forever be 80's icon to Me and I LOVE IT!! Toni Basil made a great one hit wonder with this!
You've probably seen some of Toni Basil's work before. I believe her most recent film credit was as Choreographer in Once Upon A Time in Hollywood!
One of my favorite songs from the 80's, feel good & fun road trip song... She been busy as a choreographer for movies & few artists such as Tina Turner for her concert tour 2008-2009. She came out with another song that wasn't popular , but a very good song "Over My Head".
This song was written by Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn as "Kitty", and performed by a UK group called Racey in 1979, 3 years before Toni's version. Pretty sharp to have picked up on that it was about a woman!
That's Toni's old cheerleading uniform from high school that's she's wearing here. I'll bet she can still fit it at 77. She's been a dancer since the early 60s. starting almost as soon as she graduated high school. In the 60s, she was lead dancer and assistant choreographer in various "beach party" movies and for Elvis Presley movies, too. She was in a pop-lock dance group in the 70s with Fred "Rerun" Berry called The Lockers. I grew up seeing The Lockers on Soul Train. She also choreographed 2 of David Bowie's tours ( _Diamond Dogs_ in '74, and I think _Sound And Vision_ in '90? That latter one might be wrong). She choreographed David Byrne's movements for the "Once In A Lifetime" video, too, among lots of other works.
Toni Basil wrote and added the "Hey Mickey!" hook to the song though.
Ah, this takes me back to my childhood. Every little girl loved this song in the early 80s 😁
Could you react to an 80's music only dance song by M.A.R.R.S. called Pump Up The Volume?
I believe you'd be "chair dancing"!
Thank you!✌❤🎶😁
Yes! Classic track!
Yes!!! Middle school memories! Love Pump Up The Volume!!!
A MUST
Genuine legend who, with the dance troupe she was in 'The Lockers' changed music culture and gave us a lot of what became locking, popping and Hip Hop street dance.
She has choreographed and performed with massive names. James Brown. Michael Jackson, Tina Turner. to name a few.
She is still knocking out cracking dance in her mid seventies and doing it better than most twenty year olds.
Pure class.
YES!!! I remember seeing this video on TV when I was about 3 years old and I was captivated!!! The song and video were so much fun and I loved it (still do!) For more fantastic 80s one-hit-wonders make sure to check out "Heart and Soul" by T'Pau and "Walking On Sunshine" by Katrina and the Waves!
Toni Basil was and is a famous Choreographer back then, and still today. Toni did film choreography through the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s include American Graffiti (1973), The Rose (1979), Peggy Sue Got Married (1986), Something to Talk About (1995), That Thing You Do (1996), My Best Friend's Wedding (1997),[15] Legally Blonde (2001), Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde (2003), Charlie Wilson's War (2007), and The House Bunny (2008).
She also choreographed Quentin Tarantino's 2019 film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood at the age of 75.
This song came out when I was in high school. At least one person a day sang this to me......................new people I meet (men) still sing it to me. It's about a boy though, lol.
For Thanksgiving, I'd recommend listening to Alice's Restaurant, and/or watching The Last Waltz.
I cannot recommend Alice's Restaurant enough. It is a Thanksgiving Tradition for me.
Arlo. Tradition. 💜💜💜
Jay: Mickey you better go, man! Lololol
Toni Basil helped invent pop-and-lock dancing as a member of The Lockers dance group. She also did the choreography for many major movies and acted in such films as EASY RIDER and VILLAGE OF THE GIANTS.
God this takes me back, I remember when it first came out, was played everywhere was always s on the radio too. I remember my sister buying this on vinyl single record, now that shows my age lol.
Oh wow! Old school! My cheerleading years!!!🤣🤣🤣 Beginning of MTV.. Love that your sampling all different genres! Yes its a song you can't sit still to...
Toni Basil is an actress, dancer, choreographer and singer. She had parts in many movies including some of the old beach movies of the 60s. There is video of her today in her 70s still doing those same moves. She's ageless.
Crikey! We used to go round shouting this!
( she went on to be a choreographer)
She was already a choreographer, Cherry. That was her calling. Her troupe used to dance on Soul Train and made an appearance on the very 1st season of Saturday Night Live. She was one of the very 1st Pop Lockers, a dance routine that is part of many Breakdancers rep to this day.
Oh Mickey! She is a choreographer and was a cheerleader...I love it since I love to dance and did a bit of cheerleading in middle school!✌❤🎶😁
I used to do aerobics to this song at Gold's Gym! Even when young, I thought "she" looked too old to wear a cheerleader outfit with tons of make-up. Ha ha. Big MTV song and fun!
Mickey is actually a performer from the 60's-70's pop group "The Monkees" , they were awesome, watch some of their videos
Toni Basil has choreographed in movies, tv shows, movies, and competitions. She is a dancing legend. She was 39 and actually wore her Las Vegas HS cheerleader outfit for the video.
Originally released as a single in the U.K. in 1981, “Mickey” made its way to the United States in 1982 to widespread success, with its iconic cheerleading-themed music video being played in heavy rotation on MTV and the new wave pop hit reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
I remember the first time I heard this song at 10 yrs old in 1981, I was on the school bus when I heard it playing on someone's car radio. All the cheerleaders thought this was there anthem in the 80s where I was living at the time, Wilmington Del. #80sforlife ❤
Carson High Cheerleaders from Carson High, Carson CA. Toni Basil was a cheerleader in high school and became a dance choreographer. She did a dance with Davy Jones of The Monkees in their 1969 movie head. She also choreographed dance moves for Paula Abdul, The Laker Girls dance team and many others.
I was a cheerleader in junior and high school. Miss those days.
Fun Factoids: Toni Basil was one of the 1st Pop Lockers, a dance that became part of any serious Breakdancing battle and moves still in practice today. Her troupe danced on Soul Train and were featured on the 1st season of Saturday Night Live.
Toni appeared in The Monkees movie Head and there’s a video of her and Davy Jones of The Monkees dancing to “Daddy’s Song” - which was written by Harry Nilsson. She choreographed it and the filming was way ahead of its time. Amazing!
Were you born under a rock!! This was the anthem to our childhood skate parties!!! This was one of MTV's beginnings with this song on full rotation! How have you not heard this song before!
Toni was already a "Legend" as a Choreographer. She was the Assistant Choreographer on The T.A.M.I. Show (1965) that featured performances of some of the biggest names in Music at that time. The Head Choreographer was David Winters who played "Action" in the Movie Version of West Side Story.
Toni Basil is such a cutie! 🥰 Love that she's a choreographer, too. I remember thinking as a kid that those cheerleaders were scary. I wouldn't mess with them!. They were like Toni's body guards. Anyway, Toni choreographed for The Monkees, Elvis Presley, David Bowie,. . . 💙
the song was originally written about a woman "Kitty", They changed it to 'Mickey' for the female singer. that is her original Las Vegas HS cheerleading outfit. she is the choreographer for the Tarantino movie 'It happened once in Hollywood. She has iconic dance roles in old Elvis movies . worked with Ann Margret and Elvis as well as in Sinatra movies.
This song still holds up. Great reaction as per usual. Give the song a 10.
A real feel good video and song from that same time, the gorgeous guitarist Jane wiedlin from THE Go-Go's RUSH HOUR looking amazing in a wetsuit. I know you'll have a similar reaction to this song. Best wishes from the UK. I saw Jane live many years ago, she had the most beautiful smile.
Toni Basil is a choreographer. She also choreographed for David Byrnes's dance moves on The Talking Heads music video "Once in a lifetime" A very unique video at that! LOL! Enjoyed your reaction to this one! Peace! ✌☮
"Mickey" is a 1981 song recorded by American singer and choreographer on her debut album Word of Mouth. Written by Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn as "", it was first recorded by UK music group during 1979, appearing on their debut album Smash and Grab.
Toni Basil can still dance brilliantly at the age of 77. She is amazing.
lmfao Toni Basil is such a freak love it 🤣🤣
I was 13 when this came out and I can't stress enough the popularity of this song, especially with Cheerleaders. Every school probably did a cheer routine to this. I remember my cousin who was also 13 was a cheerleader and would practice to this song. My cousin died last year at 46, but I will always remember her practicing to this song when I hear it. RIP.
We all loved this song! She is an awesome choreographer. 👍🏾👵🏿🤗
Fun fact: Toni was a pop & locker on the show Soul Train back in the 70's. She is phenomenal!

Best cheer song to move to. Saw this performed at every halftime basketball game in the 80s
Tony basil still looks great and dances! She was like 38 in this video. I think the cheerleaders are from Las Vegas high school-notice the LVH on their outfits. Tony basil was a part of a pop lockin group in the 70s with ShabbaDoo and Rerun from what’s happening!!
She does the rerun @1:55
Woo-hoooo! I love this song!! Toni Basil is incredible! I’m late to this and I see that others have already shared a lot of information about her, but I didn’t see anyone mention that she was the assistant choreographer for the legendary 1964 T.A.M.I Show!! James Brown’s performance of “Please Please Please” from that show was my October Patreon request, so I’ll tell you more about it when you react to that!
"Weird Al" Yankovic did a parody of this song on his first album. "Ricky", which is based off of the television shoe, "I Lovr Lucy." ✌
oooh, one hit wonders from about the same time? "belly of the whale" by the burning sensations, "a million miles away" by the plimsoles, "dancing in heaven" by q-feel, "i melt with you" by modern english, "88 lines about 44 women" by the nails, "come on eileen" by dexy's midnight runners, tommy tutone's "867-5309," "you spin me round (like a record)" by dead or alive, "turning japanese" by the vapors, and josie cotton's "johnny, are you queer?" some of these bands might have had another hit or two, but these songs are all so iconic, and yet none of them completely embrace the '80s more than general public's "tenderness." it captures the moment, the culture, the feel of the '80s like no other, and it was a one hit wonder, although it was from musicians who'd had success in other groups (like the english beat and fine young cannibals). trust me! i wouldn't steer you wrong, i promise. :)
This song will now be stuck in your head for days!!!
FYI - Toni Basil choreographed David Bowie's grand spectacular 1974 Diamond Dogs tour. Yup. She's been doing this for awhile.
She starred in the movie Easy Rider with Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper....Toni Basil has been around for a bit....famous choreographer
Toni Basil so talented, she also came out on Laverne and Shirley, and a few movies....
This was a huge hit back in 1981 or thereabouts. It had some quite risque lyrics.
She was about 38 at the tie and still quite fit.
I saw an interview with her about 25 years ago and she looked amazing. She would of had to have been in her early 50's then. She's nearly 80 now and still looks elegant!
“Mickey is a man. “It’s guys like you Mickey “
The catchiest song in the entire world. 😆You'll never forget it now! The movie "Bring It On" actually ends with a cover of "Hey Mickey" set to a dance number and outtakes so, now every time I hear this song, I think of that scene. And I knew the song first!! 🤣

one of the best 80s songs ever, grew up with this
This song has always been everyone's addiction, probably one of the most popular songs of all time really, features in so many films and it's one everyone sings along to at parties.
If you watch the first Bring it On movie, it features in the super funny end credits with the whole cast doing the entire song, loved it
I remember this from MTV when I was a teenager. It's catchy enough you WILL be singing it at unexpected moments when your mind wanders. #lol Both Toni Basil and Thomas Dolby (probably best known for the song She Blinded Me With Science) starred in a very funny and offbeat movie called Rockula. Bo Diddly had a bit part in it, too!
One of my favorite songs from the 80's!😊
The Tubes-Don’t Fall in Love
Now THAT is good shout !
"She's A Beauty" also 💖
This would qualify for One Hit Wonders. Toni Basil is a famous movie/TV choreographer and dancer who switched to singer for this particular song and video. She was almost 40 years old when she recorded this, so seeing her pretending to be a high school cheerleader in the video was pushing it a little bit!! Gotta admit, though, she did a great job! This was one of the catchiest songs of the 80s.
Just seen the video of her dancing on CZcams from 2yrs ago wow amazing mover for a 74yr old now shes 77 and great review loved how you got into the beat straight away its one of them toe tapping head nodding tunes
Absolutely the best reaction channel on youtube. Not only do these songs bring back lots of memories, the energy and humor crack me up.
Another 80s fave! I'm so disappointed the Black Hole Sun video got blocked - GREAT SONG!

Mickey was released in 1981 in the UK and 1982 in the US. It’s rumored that the song is about Micky Dolenz of The Monkees that she had a crush on.
The song proved to be popular that it hit #1 in Australia, Canada and it even hit #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 as well as #2 on the UK Charts.
For his self-entitled debut album, Weird Al Yankovic spoofed Mickey as Ricky and made it as a tribute to the show I Love Lucy.
For the music video for Ricky, Weird Al himself played Ricky Ricardo who was originally played by Desi Arnaz and for the song as well as in the music video, voice actress Tress MacNeille played Lucy Ricardo who was originally played by Lucille Ball.
For the spoof, instead of ended with that chorus repeated over and over, the theme song for I Love Lucy plays to close it.
The reason her cheer leading outfit is different from the others is that it's her original outfit from high school. She was so proud that she could still fit in it. Go Toni!!!
