This was THE quintessential early 80s jam... Every Junior High and Highschool cheerleader leading squad had their own routine to this song.

The thing about Toni Basil-she near 40 when she cut this video in ‘82! She originally was a choreographer IN THE ‘60s….crazy, right? She co-starred in the Monkees' 1968 film Head as well. Super talented ❤

Tony Basil danced in a dance group of about 6 black guys (primarily from "Soul Train") that "invented" the dance called ("Locking" - not "Pop Locking"), "Locking" came first. Tony said "I'll help you guys out if you teach me how to "Lock", they agreed and she joined the group. (forgive typo, her name is spelled "Toni").

I follow some current dancers on IG and they’ve posted videos in the past 10 yrs of Toni still locking in her 80’s. Phenomenal. 👏🏾

Dancing group was called 'The Lockers' which featured most of former Soul Train dancers like Don Campbell, Adolpho 'Shabba Do' Quinones, Fred 'Rerun' Berry aka Mr. Penguin. Fred Berry appeared in another Toni Basil's video. Toni also choreographed for the group Troop 'Spread My Wings'.

@@loritajohnson5664I thought it was called Break Dancing, LoL
I remember The Lockers, thank you, Lorita! I had no idea Toni was the girl, but I thought she was the best dancer in the group.
I'd forgotten his name, but wasn't it Rerun who acted in a mid 70s sitcom, too? I can't remember the name of it, but, it's the one where the guys catch a ride in the back of a pickup.

Teen Dances were big in The 80's & my 2 brothers & I went to a teen dance at the local gym in 1982 I was 14 & we did a train dance around the gym equipment to the song Mickey it was so much fun & I still remember it in detail to this day. No fun for the young nowadays.

Originally released as a single in the U.K. in 1981, “Mickey” made its way to the United States in 1982 to widespread success, with its iconic cheerleading-themed music video being played in heavy rotation on MTV and the new wave pop hit reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

It helps to consider that the time period was early MTV days. So artists were just starting to create music videos to go with their latest releases. This is literally 1 of the 1st music videos I can remember seeing. And they definitely knew their audience for these videos.

This song was Toni Basil's one and only Top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song went all the way to peaked at the #1 spot for one week during the late fall of 1982. By the way, the cheerleaders in the video came from Carson High School in Carson, CA. A definitely banger of a song indeed!!!

Nice trivia. Never knew that. I’m surprised that none of the MTV veejays ever mentioned it. Carson, huh? I could see that bc a few of the cheerleaders look Samoan (Carson is known for its Booyah tribe community).✌🏽

I’m a sub to several reaction channels. Comments like this (unrelated to the host’s opinions of a song) always intrigue me. I realize that music reactors open themselves up to scrutiny by the mere fact that they appear on camera. That said, I personally find these posts unnecessary and, in some cases, offensive. For the record: even if you were complimenting Jack’s looks, I’d find it pointless. Btw, in comparison to things shared on other channels about a reactor, yours was mild.

@@gabrielmcdonnell8699As if gaining weight can't be a health hazard. Not too very long ago, as a fan of Kevin Samuels, in the comments I'd warn him time and again about his excessive use of energy drinks, especially for someone his age. Many posters, just like you, said the same things. Some going as far as to say that these drinks were safe. Look where that got him. I hate to tell you, but we men need to talk to each other about these things because society will normalize and even encourage obesity, bad eating habits, and poor behaviors. Not like women in our society who are told do whatever you want at all times. If we men don't check each other no one will.
