it took me 15 years to figure out that there’s no end credits because the people who makes the credits got sacked in the begining of the movie
I saw this in a theater at a midnight screening of the very first showing. People were LITERALLY falling out of their seats with laughter, and that was just during the credits! I kid you not. My stomach was so sore from laughing at the beginning, that it took me another 20 minutes before I could laugh comfortably again. It was one of the best experiences of my life. When we all left the theater, that was one of the happiest movie audiences I've ever been a part of.

Yeah I remember seeing this opening night. My oldest brother took me. Watching movies on the theaters back then was the best. People were not as sensitive and just loose as a goose. Monty Python is genius stuff. Hilarious 😂

In 1975, viewers had been prepared for this film by MONTY PYTHON'S FLYING CIRCUS, the BBC television series created, written and performed by the same team at work here. The methods used in this film had all been perfected on that series, and so we had been trained to expect the unexpected.

Trained is such a good word! I love hearing the confused laughter from the audience in the first few episodes of Flying Circus, they had no idea what was coming from this brilliant group.
The ending on this movie is phenomenal. You feel so defeated until you realize it's a literal cop-out, because everyone gets arrested XD

“Very loosely based on history”
The amazing bit is how much history is in it. The banging cars on the wall (wards off evil), the muck rakers, the plague wagon, the launching animals over the wall, fishing by beating the water with a stick, screaming “run away” ( retreat didn’t enter the language until 100ish years later). Tons and tons of absurd but true things.
Terry Jones was graduated in History.
If you saw this in the theater back in the day... odds are you were a Python fan Kd you knew what to expect .. they had a TV show that was this exact kind of silly, random humor. The movies came after the show ended. This came out around when the U.S.finally got to see the show via PBS in the early 70s
Couldn't have said it better myself. The show is classic.
Although the Pythons were already beloved here in the UK they became enormous once PBS in the US started to run the show, so big in fact that it was sort of a rennaisance for the guys who would go on to perform at the Hollywood Bowl. All of the Pythons have since said that it was their success in the US that gave each of them the finances to do bigger and better things. Though the one downside being the movie Yellowbeard. We don't talk about Yellowbeard.
Most definitely. Monty Python is the reason I watched so many British Skit comedies. That was how I knew Hugh Laurie before he was on house.
During my sophomore year in college, I went to my cousin's apartment on an evening that Monty Python was being shown on the local PBS station. I was rolling on the floor laughing at the boxer, Ken Clean Air System, taking a lunch break and rubbing gravel into his scalp, while at the same time, my cousin's friend was standing beside me saying "This is not funny!"
I don't remember if it was before or after that evening, that the Holy Grail was being shown in a theater down town, that had an afternoon matinee, that allowed me to get in for $2. Regular theater prices were too steep for my tastes at the time.
@@triadmad Python was definitely a kind of humor that you were either on board with or not. Like you, I thought it was hilarious the first time I saw it as a kid. I had a similar experience when I went to see Spinal Tap in its initial release and nobody, myself included, knew what it was about. About 80% of the people in the audience had no idea what was going on and the rest of us were rolling in the aisles.
Watching you go into that with no warning was hilarious.
Monty Python was a comedy team that mostly did skit comedy. With lots of absurd humour and crazy animation.

And you're right. the ending, as well as little things like the coconuts instead of horses was because they didn't have the budget.

They did have a limited budget, and getting horses would have been expensive. I don't know if they would have thought of the coconut gag otherwise, but having thought of it I'm not sure they wouldn't have done it even if money wasn't an issue. It's hard to imagine this film now without the coconuts.

No one gives any love for “Jabberwocky”… It is hard to go wrong (if you think weirder is better) with anything written by Terry Gilliam. Time Bandits, Brazil, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen…

I'm 68 years old & have been a Monty Python fan since they came out WAAAAY back then. I love seeing how long reactors watch the end before they realize it's really over. Many quotable lines in this. RUN AWAY! RUN AWAY! I FART IN YOUR GENERAL DIRECTION! LOL! Great reaction!
I could sit and watch a full LOTR length trilogy of movies about the french guy. One of the funniest characters in any movie ever!
Wow! You picked quite a movie to start with. It thwarts so many story telling and movie making conventions that plot and setting are almost irrelevant. I've heard this described at an "anti-movie." Personally, I think it's one big joke on the audience, and as such, it's genius!
I would suggest a movie for you to watch next, but I really like the idea of you picking one at random from that list. That will take you in some very interesting directions.

It's not a joke on the audience as much as a joke on the "Dark Ages," portrayed as the most ignorant and violent times imaginable. Knights could seemingly kill at will, but if someone tried that now-a-days they'd have a police dragnet dropped on them.

@@EvanED Man that list is such a mixed bag. I mean yes there are lots of great movies on it, but it's got a ridiculous amount of recency bias and blockbuster bias these days, as well as the usual American bias. If you go by that list you WILL see a lot of films worth watching, including many of the best, but you'll miss out out on a lot of them as well. I suppose that would be true of any list, but imo IMDb is certainly not one of the better ones. I'd rather go with 1000 Movies to See Before You Die or something like that, or a list made by Ebert or Maltin, but that's me.
Talk about diving into the deep end of the pool. Most of us back then did know what we were getting into watching a Monty Python movie. They had been around a while with a show on the BBC that was shown on PBS, public broadcasting in the States. This was them at their most off-the-wall. All their movies are pretty good. They were certainly on a small budget. It meant they could only afford one horse, which lead to the most iconic joke of them using the coconuts. Can't wait to see what you watch next.

@@Whimsory Monty Python were known for their 4th wall breaking and them reacting to the coconuts used is marvellous. The one horse they had money for was of course the set up for the cop-out ending.
A few funny facts:
It's but a scratch/fleshwound comes from this movie.
Holy Handgranade(used in a lot of fighting games) comes from this movie.
Also if you want to see the usual Monty Python things look for 'ministry of silly walks' and 'live at hollywood ball'

One of the more subtle things about this is that in the original Arthurian myths, the Quest for the Holy Grail was considered unachievable. It was done for the protagonist to discover themselves through the attempt, not to actually get the magic item. So the fact that this film has no real ending actually fits that theme.
I like you style so far and hope you continue to react to films you haven't seen.

Yes, it is dialogue that makes this movie a classic! Back in high school me and my friends could recite most of the scenes verbatim!
I love to see peoples first reaction to the ending. The "W!T! F!" look, LOL.
I was too young to see it in the theater, as I was only born in '74... but when I was a kid, it was well known and loved in geek circles, while most other people would just stare at you blankly if you quoted a line or referenced the movie. I was a bit confused the first time I saw it, but I've long since grown to love and appreciate it. Definitely a classic.
22:15 Classic reaction. 🤣 In the cinema, the lights would come up or they’d switch to a completely different reel of film. They added the play out music for home release so people wouldn’t think there was a problem with their copy.
Really?!! That's hilarious. I'm glad they did that for the home release because I could see people thinking that--even I was getting ready to refilm after, for example the subtitle "problem" in the beginning. It would be such an experience to be in the theater for that. Thank you for watching!

Amazing review of one of my favourite movies. I´m from Germany and here the movie had a completely different title called "Die Ritter der Kokosnuss" or in english "Knights of the Coconut".
Which was really not subtle at all. It´s great to see younger generations react to movies like this, because sadly there are not many made like this anymore.
I really hope you react to other Monty Python movies and maybe try to watch some stuff from their show.
The end of the movie btw. was basically a literal "Cop Out".

Monty Python was very well known by the time they released this. Previously they had a sketch comedy TV show called Monty Python's Flying Circus. That and their other movies are all worth reacting to, or at least watching on your own.
The "intermission" is a prank intended to trick audience members into getting up from their seats and maybe moving a few steps away from those seats.
I was in high school when this came out and I went to see it with a group of friends that were all into Monty Python. Seeing your reactions really took me back to that time when this comedy was fresh and cutting edge. It was a joy to see you enjoying it.
That was fun! lol "what the hell did I just watch?" is the usual reaction to Holy Grail, especially if you're going in knowing nothing. Some people prefer "Monty Python's Life of Brian" because it has a more coherent plot and message.
For sheer jokes-per-minute though you can't top "Airplane!"

"Just when I think I know where this is going...." That's the magic of Monty Python, my friend: you never know where things are going. 😁 Thanks for choosing my favorite movie of all time!! It's so wacky and random and clever. British humor, especially Monty Python humor, is an acquired taste for many people, and I love it! That signature animation that you were a little confused by comes from the one American member of Monty Python, Terry Gilliam, who is from my state of Minnesota. He also played Patsy, and is the one who you saw "die" from a heart attack. I get great joy from watching people try to make sense of this classic movie, and you have yourself a new subscriber!
A lot of people were confused by French soldiers claiming British castles, but historians said that was one of the most authentic parts.
I can still quote whole swathes of this movie after many many years....
You got my sub as soon as you praised "lord of the rings" and you did not dissapoint that was one of the cutest reaction videos I have ever seen in my life
"I feel like with the whole movie they're just messing with you." And, with that statement, you now fully understand Monty Python. :D And there is "meaning" in what Python does, but you have take a moment to figure it out. For example, monks hitting themselves on the head was a a snipe at a period of history where some did go about "punishing" themselves for their sins. The overly detailed Holy Hand Grenade instructions were a poke at some passages of the Bible. And the whole "Bring out your dead" sequence was a "punking" of various plagues in history.
That said, my suggestion is, just keep randomly pulling from that list. I applaud you for doing so. I can't say you'll love them all, but you will enjoy a large portion of them. Even the black & white ones.
You are doing a marvelous job portraying yourself. A quick trip to the bong enhances the Monty Python experience.

At the time the movie was released, if you went to see it in the theater, you already knew who Monty Python was from their skit-based TV show and you would not have been the least bit surprised about what happened during the movie.
That's true in general, if you found the Monty Python TV show before their movies, you would know exactly what you were getting into.
And they had a promotion that if you brought a coconut you would get in for a discount

Monty Python became known for their TV sketch comedy show in the . Their first movie was actually just a series of sketches put together and titled, "And Now for Something Completely Different" 1971. Holy Grail is their second film, which they followed up with Life of Brian (1979), and The Meaning of Life (1983).

I’m happy to get in on the ground floor of your reacting career. You picked a classic comedy. As others have pointed out, there are two more great Python films. You should also check out their 70s British sketch comedy show Monty Python’s Flying Circus. There are also many movies that, while not Python movies, have some of the Pythons in them. I think A Fish Called Wanda is one of the more popular ones. Terry Gilliam is also an accomplished director, with classics such as Brazil, Time Bandits, and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen.
"Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas", "12 Monkeys"...
Another Python-adjacent film that doesn’t get enough love is 1989’s Erik the Viking.

I'm so glad CZcams recommended this for me. You did a fantastic job with your first reaction video and I have subscribed hoping for more great ones to come. This is one of my favorite comedy movies and Monty Python's Life of Brian is possibly even better with a more complete story. Is it a coincidence that your text intro says you're trying something different? Monty Python's Flying Circus skit show used the line "And now for something completely different" often when transitioning from one skit to another. Comedies are my favorite movies and here are some I recommend: "Raising Arizona"(1987), "Galaxy Quest"(1999), "Back to the Future" trilogy(1985),(1989),(1990), and a couple old b/w films "Bringing Up Baby"(1938) and "Arsenic and Old Lace"(1944).
There are just so many great films I'm going to list a few more comedies (and some musicals): "It Happened One Night"(1934), "The Wizard of Oz"(1939), "Singing in the Rain"(1952), "Some Like It Hot"(1959), "My Fair Lady"(1964).
You did fairly well for your first time watching this movie. When you asked about what the animation is about, it precedes the tale of each knight and it lightly represents what each knight is about. The sun and clouds were keeping the scribe up, "weather keeping you up at knight, hint hint", and the forcefulness of him telling the sun and clouds to clear off and leave him alone is the power of Sir Gallahad who follows that animation and ridiculously kills all those people at the wedding. Same thing with the knight who gets to the castle Anthrax with all those women in it. The animation right before his tale was a priest who jumps too far and springs onto the place where a nun is sitting and he stops upside down with his frock falling over his bum, and you can hear the nun muttering with surprise and excitement.

I love this movie. I like the idea of you picking a random one from the list as it keeps it surprising for viewers. that being said when it was scrolling on screen my eyes saw pans labyrinth, it is an excellent and dark fantasy movie
The first time I watched this, I sat around for half an hour waiting for the “real” ending. I live for watching that look of bemusement on new viewers now. You did not disappoint!
In my opinion, the best movies are those when after finishing it, you blink and ask yourself "What did I just watch?" By that standard, "Southland Tales" would be a good pick. That is one hell of a weird masterpiece...

I think this kind of film could be made nowadays, but it wouldn't be any good.
There is a surprising amount of historical accuracy in this film. Some of the stuff that seems most random and absurd is actually just a product of it being set in the Dark Ages. Read about old medieval witch trials, or the flagellates of the Black Death, or some of the Arthurian legends... and bits and pieces start to make some kind of sense.

As others have said back in the day memorizing the lines of this movie was a thing. A friend of mine and I in our freshman year of high school watched it so many times. We made a tape cassette of it and then I took the time to type up the dialogue of the script while playing it back on tape. We would walk around reciting it. Oh yes, and we were the coolest kids in school. 😆

@paulwolffart1251 Haha! I still have the audio cassette I made by placing my tape recorder next to the TV speaker when PBS played the Holy Grail late on a Sunday night (back in pre-VHS days!). Practically wore that tape out memorizing the entire movie. 😁
Hats to you for picking this movie at random for the first reaction. It's uncommon for someone so young to understand MP humor at first try, but you got it. Fun fact: this movie contains over 500 jokes, including opening credits, so average avery 15 seconds there is a joke, that's why is so hard to react and keep attention.

Just found this randomly and LOVE your reactions to it! Monty Python was always great at subverting expectations, so your reactions were absolutely on point for someone not familiar with them. I grew up on Python, starting with this movie, and it pretty much set the tone of my sense of humor moving forward (for better or for worse). My mom actually saw this movie in the theater and claims that they were handed coconut halves as they entered, confusing everyone until it became clear why.
You should give Monty Python's Life of Brian a try; while Holy Grail is the more popular and beloved movie, I've always felt Life of Brian was their best attempt at an actual movie, not just a collection of sketches and vignettes.

I first saw this as a kid in the 90’s and it was the greatest thing I ever saw. It breaks all conventional logic and is just completely absurd in its approach to story telling and film making.
Some fun facts :
1) They wanted to use horses but couldn’t afford it in the budget, that’s why they use coconuts. Turned out to be one of the most iconic parts of it :)
2) Tim the enchanter forgot his name, that’s why he paused slightly and then said ‘Tim’. They decided to keep it because it was authentic and hilarious.
3) The movie is one big LARP
4) Back in the day there use to be phone services where you could text a question and have it answered for $1, before the days of google. If you asked it was the airspeed velocity of an unloaded swallow was, it would reply with ‘African or European?’ 🤣🤣🤣

Really pleased to stumble on this. So refreshing to see someone's first exposure to the eclectic madness of Python. Think of it as a sketch show stretched to feature length with a common theme.

It's possible that Airplane would never have been filmed but for Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Similarly, Saturday Night Live was intended to be the American Monty Python. If you watch their original sketches, they were nearly as absurd as Pythons were. Land Shark!
When I was a teenager I watched this movie with my dad, who had seen it a lot. He laughed his ass of at me at the end because of the look on my face. I imagine it was the same look she had and I had a hell of a laugh from it. As entertaining as the movie is her reaction was even better. Well done.

Loved your take and your reaction, especially as you don't know anything about Monty Python. Monty Python was a British sketch show that's full title was Monty Python's Flying Circus that had this kind of comedy and sketches that would just go into the next one. The animation was done by the only American in the team Terry Gilliam. The other 5 main members were Terry Jones, John Cleese, Eric Idle, Michael Palin and Graham Chapman. They did 3 main films, this one, Monty Python's Life of Brian (which was controversial when it was made) and The Meaning of Life. (which was really a collection of their sketches). The lack of horses and strange ending was because of lack of money (it had a budget of just US$400,000) they couldn't afford horses and at the end they just ran out of money. It was a relative success, bringing in US$5 million at the box office. I recommend you watching Life of Brian if you enjoyed The Holy Grail, Life of Brian in my opinion is the best of the 3 films. Looking forward to what film you choose to do next. Good start. :).
Fun facts:
They had such a small budget that they could afford only the ONE horse....hence the coconuts.
The black knight fight: They actually had a one legged man for the third limb taken off. The part where he is on the ground, they dug ONE hole for his only leg.
And the owners of the rabbit were pissed because the ink was used was not water soluble.
Another reason they didn’t budget for horses: none of them could ride and they couldn’t afford to learn.
The look of incredulous awe on your face when the three-headed giant appeared was magical.

As has been stated, their forte was sketch comedy. They pretty much made it up as they went along. We all loved quoting the movie: "Your father was a hamster, and your mother smelled of elderberries!"
By the way, a familiarity with medieval history is helpful. The "bring out your dead" scene refers to the Plague that scourged Europe. The monks were a reference to some of the more bizarre religious orders in reaction to the Plague, including the self-flagellant sects. They were reciting Gregorian chants, that came from that period.
My suggestion for your next movie: Mel Brooks' Blazing Saddle. Brooks has a career that spans decades, and is famous for many great movies. Warning: the language is NSFW, but only to mock & belittle bigots.

I recommend number 5 on the list: "Twelve Angry Men." Maybe my favorite drama of all time and it's plot has been re-done and copied in many shows. It's amazing because nearly the entire film takes place in one room.
Note to Whimsory: Twelve Angry Men has been filmed more than once. The 1957 B&W version is the classic one. The 1997 made-for-television remake is inferior.

great reaction - grew up on Monty Python, love seeing new reactions to their stuff. Life of Brian and Meaning of Life are great movies by them too. PS they blew half the budget on Tim the Enchanter's explosions, that's why they they couldn't afford horses and used coconuts - became the best joke! Life of Brian had a bigger budget as George Harrison of the Beatles funded it ;)

I don't have much to add since most of the fun facts and context have already been said in the comments but this movie is definitely a nerdy/comedy classic! I've watched three others on YT react to this movie and they all had the same response as you. And that is "what did I just watch?". Great reaction on your part to this absorbs movie.
Some of my favorite movies include The Shawshank Redemption, Tombstone, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Sting, and the original Magnificent Seven. It would be great if you could react to a couple of those some time. Some other great comedies are Ghostbusters, Airplane!, The Princess Bride, The Blues Brothers, and This is Spinal Tap. With Groundhog Day coming up in a few weeks, you should check out the classic comedy Groundhog Day, starring Bill Murray
The Magnificent Seven, a great western, has been accused of copying the Japanese film Seven Samurai which has an almost identical plot...swords instead of guns....Oh, they speak Japanese.
@@subitman12 They weren't "accused of copying" any more than "The Wiz" was accused of copying The Wizard of Oz. It's a retelling of a story using a different setting and a different genre of film. The makers of The Magnificent Seven never tried to hide the fact that it was inspired by the Kurosawa masterpiece, as was the 1980 science fiction movie Battle Beyond the Stars, and most movie fans already know this. A little more trivia: Akira Kurosawa was a fan of American westerns and The Seven Samurai was intended to be an homage to that genre of film, so The Magnificent Seven was an American western remake of a Japanese movie that was an homage to American westerns.

Also, the insults were pretty well researched. Hamsters were the ancient equivalent of rabbits (as in, breeding a lot), so "your mother was a hamster" is saying she slept around. And elderberries were (and still are) used to make wine, so "your father smelt of elderberries" is calling him a drunk. 🤣

This is a great introduction that dry, sarcastic British humor. The group had a whole TV show called Monty Python's Flying Circus and about three more "movies", all in this iconic style of theirs.

I'm very much in the same category as you here, I watch shows far more often than movies, so probably 80% of the movies on that list would be new to me as well! This happens to be an exception, since I was a big fan of the show already. Their TV series and other movies are similar. Consume all the Monty Python stuff you can and you will take something away - sore ribs from laughing so much.
This movie is weird, but in the best way. I was a teen when this came out, and back then we expected this form of chaos in our comedies. Movies like Young Frankenstein, Airplane, Top Secret, Blazing Saddles, and many others by Mel Brooks or the Zucker, Abrahams, Zucker team taught me, and all of us, what - not only what comedy can be - but also what comedy should be. I owe my sense of humor to these creative geniuses, and many other period specific, comedy greats.
