I’m starting to think Joe isn’t real. Maybe I’ve watched Fight Club a few too many times, and we are only 3 episodes in, so it’s definitely a shot in the dark. But based on Butcher’s current condition, Joe just popping out of nowhere, and just the way he speaks, it’s very possible Butcher’s just imagining him like he imagines seeing his wife.

Wouldn’t make much sense since he actively interacts with the world and specifically brought Butcher the (SPOILER) drugs to take down Ryan. The whole discussion about “would you train your son to go fight Homelander” also wouldn’t make much sense as something happening in Butcher’s head. It might be him imagining an old friend instead but that seems far fetched too

i think kessler might also be in Butcher's head as a hallucinogenic side effect of temp v. kessler is never seen interacting with the outside world beyond his conversations with butcher-he doesn't even touch his cup of coffee and knows significantly more about Butcher's interactions with Homelander than he probably should. i think his image of kessler and their exchanges are a way too fuel butcher's plot against homelander exclusively. it could make sense that he has competing voices in his head with both becca and kessler, considering that we know how distressed, broken, and unstable his character has become.
The fact they mention how soilder boy could’ve done it and we know he’s retuning I think he’s gonna kill his son and raise Ryan right give him some redemption with a train being the next leader of the seven sense he’s also getting a redemption arc
when you pay attention to the camera angles I think it becomes a bit more obvious that Joe isn't realy there. Firstly, there's never someone else present that interacts with Joe. at 2:20 Joe is mostly hidden from the frame, and as it zooms in to reveal Joe's face the camera cuts. 2:30 and 2:40 Joe is hidden again and he never picks up the cup. Not to mention Joe doesn''t really say anything Butcher doesn't know, and he even says things only Butcher knows like how he stopped Soldier Boy from killing Homelander. Thematically, as Butcher is hallucinating his wife, which is trying to comfort him and keep him grounded, he also hallucinates Joe, who is pushing him to be more ruthless, like an Angel and Devil situation he has going on.

From what they have showed of kessler is that he feels that sooner or later the supes will decide they want to run the show ,and that they need to do something before that happens

It is that detail of Soldier Boy stuff that makes me think that Kessler is his dead friend or something. Also stuff like, dragging his body out of that whatever mission he talked about and Butcher said, "it's hard to forget"

call me crazy but the fact Joe Kesler knew butcher had a shot at killing Homelander with soldier boy just hints more at him being a figment of butchers imagination because how could he possibly know that information. to me, both becca and joe kesler are like the devil and angel on butchers shoulder. joe represents the evil of butcher and shows his willingness to take down homelander at any cost whereas becca shows that all that matters to butcher is their son and with the time he has left keeping his son safe is all that matters and it also seems the situation and emotions butcher is feeling is the time each character shows up so id expect by the end of the season he will have to decide between which of these characters he wants to be

If the theory I'm cooking up is correct, Kessler died on the Panjshir valley. He says that Butcher dragged him off there, but he was probably already dead or dying from his injuries, and Butcher is imagining him in his Temp V fueled insanity.
Further into the season, we'll probably have the fake "he is alive" moments, where characters (probably Milk, Hughie or someone else) will "interact", probably Kessler answering some questions, Butcher introducing him to people (without getting the proper introduction scene, just off camera), or him interacting with objects (we'll have to keep a very sharp eye if the objects actually moved, or Butcher imaagined it all), making us feel like he is very much alive.
Then all the red herrings. He starts showing up more and more only when Butcher is completely alone, same clothes, doesn't touch any food/drink, and starts making cryptic questions or giving vague answers, or just straight up changing the matter.
Then someone (very probably Grace) will break the news. Butcher will be in complete denial at first, we'll have a moment with both Kessler and Becca (probably a Homelander hallucination too, but this is going a bit too far). Then Butcher will come to his senses before finally dying.
