    Since he doesn't give stats on it:
    The Airtrain uses customized versions of the off the shelf Bombardier Innovia Metro 200 series cars.
    As such, the line uses Liner Induction motors.
    The price is a little high, but it was only just increased in 2019. from $5 it had been since the system opened on December 17th 2003, the 100th anniversary of the Wright Brother's first flight.
    Note that the price has since gone up again, but only 25 cents to $8.
    The system is operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which, due to it's unique nature as being operated as an interstate agency, does not have access to tax dollars the same way that an entity such as, say, the MTA does.

    I just love the Moynihan Train Hall, it's unreal how beautiful and impressive it is. The giant steel girders anchoring the space with all of its natural light put the dingy Penn Station to shame. No longer does one need to scurry into the city like a rat

I’m really struck by the architecture of this building and how it’s a beautiful combination of the old/classic and new. If the Moynihan expansion is being this well received, one can only imagine the sorta praise that would be given to Penn Station if the original section between Seventh and Eighth avenues was to be rebuilt to how it was before the current MSG and that office tower were built atop the station.
    ‘Twas bloody shameful of the Pennsylvania Railroad to demolish the station’s original building, and even more shameful that the NYC government at the time allowed such a thing to occur. But, had original Penn not been demolished, we might not have Grand Central in the form that it is in nowadays. Ah well. One can ponder “what-if” all they want, but it won’t change a thing.
    In hindsight though, America screwed up BIG TIME in the 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s in regards to public transit, and it really shows with modern day Penn Station. Don’t get me wrong, the Moynihan Train Hall is indeed a step in the right direction, but only a step. There’s a lot more that needs to get done to bring out the full potential of Penn Station, like rebuilding what was once between Seventh and Eighth avenues, for a start. I think the only group actively advocating for such work is ReThink NYC, and whilst their plan does have its flaws that could be improved, it’s honestly one of the better ones out there. It’s definitely worlds better then the current real estate deal that’s barely veiled as a transit expansion that’s being enacted.

    • @LonestarTrips
      @LonestarTrips  Před rokem +1

      I noticed that when I visited on Saturday! Kind of ridiculous to have such a large station with no seating. That being said, it is a commuter rail station, so people really aren’t waiting for too long, instead coming and going as trains arrive and depart. From what I saw, it looks like people can board whenever they please, so seating really isn’t an issue. Granted, this may have changed yesterday with the full service implementation.

    I'll be in NY in a couple of weeks and am looking to get the LIRR from JFK to Penn Station but I'm currently wearing a medical boot due to a fracture in my foot and will still be wearing it when I arrive in NY so my issue will be getting from Penn Station to my hotel on 44th street. Are there cabs outside Penn that I could get to my hotel? I really can't walk far at all wearing this boot.

    • @LonestarTrips
      @LonestarTrips  Před 2 lety +2

      You should be able to hail a cab pretty easily from outside Penn Station. Amtrak’s website says there should be a taxi stand at the corner of 8th and 33rd, but I’m sure you could get a cab from any of the streets around the station, or get an Uber or Lyft if need be. Hope this helps!

    Nothing incredible about it. As a regular LIRR commuter, I hardly ever use Moynihan Hall as I tend to still come through Penn Station to get to
    other points in the city; I am sure I'm not the only one. It may be great for Amtrak or NJ Transit riders, but it's a boondoggle for the rest of us.

    • @rmknicks
      @rmknicks Před 2 lety

      I use Moynihan all of the time unless I need to hop onto the 7th Ave subway. I find my self using the A/C/E more of the time plus there's the taxi stand on 8th Ave behind MSG. On my way back to LI, I'd much rather wait at Moynihan for my train.

    • @rrrglynn
      @rrrglynn Před 2 lety +2

      @@rmknicks The Long Island Rail Road commonly uses tracks 17-21 so its pointless and out of the way waiting in that main train hall since there is no access to those tracks.You have to use the West End Concourse. It's really only useful for Amtrak. Even the LIRR's flagship train the cannonball still leaves from track 19. Its totally out of the way for most LIRR riders to use.
