current penn station looks like a homeless shelter with a krispy kream. it shouldnt even be called penn station. yes this was worth it. when taking a subway and having someone sleep in the middle of the platform the 1 billion wasnt enough
This train station looks incredible and I hope it starts a trend of more attention being paid to train stations around the country, hoping the future gives us faster and more reliable train service nationwide. Great tour dude!!
Thanks Luis!
Unfortunately, not bloody likely.
It’s a huge waste of money there’s not reason a lot of the material should’ve came from everywhere but america
@@myworld9010 that's not necessarily a waste of money. Maybe a waste of energy... not even sure.
The loss of the original Penn Station sparked the landmarks preservation movement that saved Grand Central a d many other important structures.
Ironically, I was travelling from Philly to NYC on New Year's Day via the Amtrak. I had no idea this was the grand opening, but man was it a sight to see!
That's crazy!
As someone who saw the original Penn Station as a child, I'm happy they carried over some design cues from the old building. Far better than what’s across the street.
I was in the old Penn Station as a child with my parents.. I can remember it so vividly ..It should have NEVER been demolished....This new station in very nice but.....Grand Central gets my vote for the best station....
It was the staple visual for train travle! But there is so much more traffic now and population grows. The update tho sad, was needed!
What would really be nice is if there was some way to reproduce the best parts of the old Penn, the waiting room, shop arcade, carriageways even if the garden stays put. As long as 2 Penn Stays though it wouldn't be possible.
Moynihan needs to be a standard-setting station for how America's railway stations need to be built. We could also use new trains, and a European style transportation system in this country. Great video.
They need to bring the eagle statues back and place them throughout the station. They were on the original Penn Station.
I love the new Moynihan Train Hall. However, the lack of seating is lamentable. Also, it's easy to put down the traditional Penn Station across the street, but it has numerous shops and food choices, and is quite functional and convenient. One big plus about the new train hall is the Amtrak first class lounge, upstairs. It rivals many airline clubs at major airports. The view of the train hall is great, and food & beverages are free.
minimal seating & hard, hard flooring. i need to remember to where my thickly cushioned soles shoes. these builders are destroying people's skeletons. i walked on concrete for 40 years & my knees & feet are in pain a lot.
They need to redevelop Brooklyn's Atlantic Terminal Station.
I agree 100%
They redeveloped the parking lot in the mall but thats it. Its sad. The whole neighborhood since covid has been redeveloped which is predominantly white. But the mall itself and station which you'll pretty much see mostly black New Yorkers use to travel and shop hasn't been touched. its a shame.
Word son! Barclays Center is stunning but Atlantic Terminal looks like it's stuck in the 90s!
Maybe when or if we win a championship Atlantic Terminal might be getting some over looking..
One can hope 🤷🏾♂️
Im a new yorker and i never saw this station, i do remember being this the old post office where i got my passport, but wow that station looks beautiful. I like it becuase they kept some of the old design (classic) and new design which came out beautiful. This will be another great station for my city New york.
Grand Central is a heritage, a class by itself. But this station looks good too. Very hip n trendy.
Since I saw the original penn torn down starting Nov 1963 this is absolutely a dream come through. Since I saw both buildings you cannot compare. The original awaiting room was 150 feet high it was breath taking. Best of luck.
I really love the Moynihan Train Hall, really impressive structure.
As beautiful as this is, GCT will always have my heart, esp. after they cleaned it, polished the marble and installed air-conditioning. The market hallway to Lexington Avenue is marvelous. I have been to the Oyster Bar so many times, I can't begin to say how many. Several hundred, probably.
The shopping areas are in the right place in GCT. They don’t interfere with the boarding area and they offer comfort and convenience for people who are traveling, whether they have 5 minutes or 5 hours before they need to board their train. It doesn’t seem like MTH will offer that level of form & function.
The sad part is.. that the original Penn Station looked even more impressive and they replaced it with Madison Square Guarden... well atleast the upper level.
It's many years since I last visited NYC (and indeed the USA... I'm from the UK) and I used Penn Station a number of times. Although it was functional enough, it always felt cramped and crowded. So I was encouraged to hear about the redevelopment of the Moynihan Building as a new entrance to the station some years ago. Well what a delight! Light, spacious and airy... it's a fitting entrance point for NYC and I'm sure regular users must be equally impressed. So roll on my eventual return. Well done the architects and developers... and thanks!
this is far far bette than anything london has to offer
Between this and LaGuardia, NYC is evolving into a world class transportation center.
far from it
Beautiful!! If only the place would stay pristine, and clean like stations in Tokyo.
I'm really glad that they went ahead and built the new train hall and I'm glad that they named it after Moynihan.
Thanks as always! I do wish you would have spoken a bit about the outside Architecture. That Greek style temple motif with those massive Corinthian Columns looks amazing!
Its really nice! However, I do wish that there was more waiting room capacity; when I went through there I couldn't help but notice that the designated waiting areas were overcapacity and a ton of blank, empty and honestly wasted space in the middle. Even a single row of benches between each escalator well would go a long way
Haven’t been to NYC in 2 years, but can’t wait to come back 🤙
That skylight at the train station looks amazing! The artwork of the breakdancers looks amazing! The Hive city skyline looks incredible! I'm always impressed by visual art and all the detail!
That's a breathtaking place. And that ride up the escalator into the main space looks epic. Thanks for the video.
What a gorgeous train station renovation. I love the way the light comes in to the building. Beautiful!
Jon, I can still remember using this as the old Post Office mailing postcards back home. When I went pass in September 2019 en route to the Highline Park, I was stunned and impressed at such a big construction.
I've been looking forward to this new station! I can't wait to visit NYC again when everything is safe and over with
Wow I can't believe it, born and raised in the city moved away a few yrs ago and today I just drove by and saw the new change and my heart broke but just like NYC memories last forever and it's a forever changing apple
I'd still want to see the old Penn station rebuilt !
They are working on it first Madison square garden needs a new location (I’m sure MSG brings a lot of funds to the city and people as well)
@@user-sx7hf3kr4z MSG isn't going anywhere. They recently spent 3 summers rebuilding it!
Great video, looks fantastic! Looking forward to travelling to NYC again someday soon. Greetings from Ireland! 🇮🇪
Thanks for the review ! Whenever I can finally get back to the city 😫I’ll be excited to check this out
Appreciate you Jon !!Thanks for showing us all the new and old Of NYC!🚶🏻♂️🗽😍
🙏🏻
Oh wow, how did I overlook this? I always drop packages in this post office and never thought that the side of post office was entrance to train station. Thanks! I Always learn something new about the city thru your channel.🤓
Awesome!
It just opened.lol That is why you did not notice it.
Outstanding. A modern station with a traditional look.
If I’m leaving NYC, it’s usually via Amtrak. The light and high ceilings are great, but I’m wondering about the practicality. One of the major issues with Penn Station is the mad rush to get to the escalator when your track is called. It doesn’t appear that they will be able avoid that in this train hall.
I think the idea behind this whole project was to relieve congestion at Penn Station, no completely absorb the workload. Track 17, for instance, might have become congested when called at Penn station, but now since track 17 can be accessed at both Penn and Moniyhan, that completely stops congestion.
I have to see the new train hall in person. It looks gorgeous!
This spot is cleeeeeeeean! That magic moment coming up the escalator is definitely kin to walking into GCT, different but still magic. Keep up the great work covering NYC!
🙌🏼
I like that it doesn’t have benches, it keeps it open and clean. Loved the second piece of art you featured
Great point about the benches :)
I don't believe the original Penna. Station had benches either.
This was done to limit the amount of New Yorks homeless that could set up shop.
The stained glass was very nice. I really like the upside down “skyline” that was clever and dramatic! Thanks for the tour too!
Thanks so much!
Awesome video. I'm still hoping to visit NYC someday in the not too distant future. I was stationed at the Brooklyn Naval Yards in 1981 on the USS Aylwin and it was like NYC was one gigantic playground. There was so much to see and do. Seeing your videos it seems there's even more to see and do now. My favorite memory was we used to muster every morning on the helo deck of the ship at 7:00 am. And in front of us would be the NYC skyline sparkling in the morning sun. Can't wait to see it again. Thanks so much for the videos.
Nice tour!
I love that they kept the old architecture style and it's so modern at the same time 🥳
The Farley building that it’s in was designed by the same architect as the old 1910 Penn Station, McKim Mead and White.
I like it because it is brand new but the old style train stations like Grand Central is what I prefer.
Nice one John, I bet Adriana loves the artwork and station. 🤗👍🏻😉
Finally got to visit. It’s beautiful !
Was just by penn station and did not know a new station was built 😝
Yay I could experience it whenever I visit Boston for the first time :)
It's a beautiful train hall but I don't think it will be used much since it's not centrally located like the old area across the street.
If people come back to their old offices in Midtown from Long Island especially, i think that would be the major test to see how it functions. Thanks for stopping by ActionKid!!
Eighth Avenue Subway goes right between them. I haven’t been there, but I think the new train hall serves the same track platforms, so you can continue to use the same dingy, crowded station if you want.
IMPRESSIVE cinematography - best of all vids♡
I like the new station just for the light alone! GC is still awesome, but I love the light coming through the roof; so much brighter.
Thank you for your videos.
❤️
The Moynihan Train Hall is actually an incredible train station. Unlike the Penn station, this is the best futuristic train station ever.
In my opinion Penn station is really the worst place in NYC because of rush hours crowds.
@@ianproduction2 noted. Sounds like your issue is limited pedestrian space. I can’t blame you.
I actually didn't know you could go through the post office to get into the train hall! That's kinda nice!
Glad it's still a post office. Thanks.
The artwork there is really interesting. Glad you pointed it all out. Modern-day Art Deco.
Thanks 🙏🏻
The train station is looking squeaky clean, giving it a thumbs up. Hello from NYC! 😊 👋
Yup takes a lot of time for crews to clean the building including during midday. But it’s a nice station that deserves it. Even though I’m a Jersey commuter, Amtrak and LIRR get a nice station… and if my train arrives or departs from any track 5 and up, I can still access it from the platform. The information displays in Moynihan don’t show NJT trains though.
Beautiful
Your my favorite New York CZcamsr.
Thank you for sharing. We have Brightline train station here in Miami. But the NYC is bigger for sure
That looks like a super cool train hall, can't wait to visit NYC again!
Spasiba Dima
I think nothing will ever replace the majesty of old Penn Station, but this new hall can give a glimpse at the marvel and splendor one would have felt back then!
I don’t live in the east anymore but this is soooooo much better than what Penn Station has been for 50+ years.
Great job...well done NYC 👍
I’m going to be heading to DC on Amtrak in 2 weeks. I was shocked but elated when I realized the trains now depart from this station.
I see myself in NYC again soon - thanks to you! And I will definitely put this new station on my must-see list. The irony is that I will probably fly into Newark and have to take the train into nasty Penn Station across the street.
🤷🏻♂️
This Is a great step for Rail passengers coming to And from NY . The New Train Hall is no comparison to Grand Central Terminal but it has plenty of infrastructure potential.
Plan to visit for the second time with friends.
Good video. Thank you.
I used to live on W 34 / 10th and worked at 31st / 10th. I saw the beginning of the work and watched the process but never imagined it would
be done well.
It’s worth visiting
I didn't know all that was in there! Cool
Both Grand Central and the new train station are both amazing stations one I love the Grand Central because it's the last of the old amazing stations than uses s but they have done an amazing job with the new station
I can't wait until Penn Station is done
Amazing, reminds of kings cross or Farnington stations here in London England
Can’t wait to go this week and catch my train Amtrak
My first impression is that it's lacking ornamentation -- a bit sterile. Part of the challenge is long-term maintenance costs -- things don't get cleaned as much as you'd think, and anything which would gather dust/grime will be the first to get "shabby". Less is more. But I'm with you; the lack of architectural details is disappointing.
I think the lack of public seating is to discourage vagrancy. Amtrak passengers are ticketed so can prove they're in transit -- other networks (e.g. LIRR) are regular commuter services and there's no need to sit around for long.
Hmmm.. i liked it, but let's keep in mind my frame of reference was what was across the street 😅
@@HereBeBarr Don't make me think about that labyrinth of pain...
🤣
It would have been great if they tried to recreate the old Penn Station. Still a massive shame it's gone.
some of the beams of Moynihan station are from the original Penn station!
I miss Ny .I lived there for one year and stil can't take my mind of New Y.I have to go backm
Yes, I very much do as I commuted from Rye to Grand Central Terminal over 30 years when it was a pit. Jacqueline Onassis was behind it's revitalization. I'm now in Chelsea and will be in the area later today. I knew that it was modeled after the original.
The $1.6b has shown its power for the gorgeous looking and modern design. But IMO it'd be better developing high speed rails before grandeur stations.
A billion dollars should have gone to high speed trains, this station is impressive, I use amtrak often from buffalo ny to nyc but it takes 8 frigging hours, any who if you need to use the rest room in midtown Manhattan, the rest rooms at monihan station are excellent for now
This could possibly take Grand Central’s Spot as the best Train Station in the city. Once everything is built ofc. Great Video as always Jon
That remains to be seen :) I will admit it's more open/airy feeling. Something about Grand Central's Old School "Opulence" though makes it feel truly magical for me.
@@HereBeBarr no argument here! Still love Grand Central for its history and the atmosphere
I will get up there eventually.
I went there yesterday and its so beautiful! It was nice to see Amtrak stuff was moved there! Such a breath of fresh air compared to the penn monstrosity across the street! Tho depression this Jersey pheasant still had to go across the street. P.S. im having Starbucks as im watching this ☕️
Tracks 5-21 (NJT uses 1-15) can access Moynihan directly, but you need your smartphone to know of any NJT departure information, as NJT trains are not shown on the digital information displays.
Wow 🤩
Great and informative video as always Jon :) I've heard a lot of mixed reaction to this station, but personally, I absolutely love it. I think it's a really beautiful building, maybe not quite up there with Grand Central Station, but still great. I'm so glad you mentioned the glass sky light because it's one of the things that really strikes me about the station. I commute between Manhattan and DC for work a lot and I'm forward to taking my journeys from here 🚆🗽
That station look so nice even as living in New York City I hadn't check it out yet.
Hit it up!
Love how bright and airy it is! I'm not entirely sure how it was funded, but I hope that was some capital from private sector even if it was in exchange of taxes rebaits...
It was funded by all the taxpayers. Just like how everything in NYC is funded.
@@bigmacdaddy1234 half of it was funded by Related Companies and Vornado Realty Trust
@@leobragaurbe And guess where the related companies and Vornado Realty gets their money from? Bingo. The tax payers.
@@bigmacdaddy1234 no, they constributed with $650 million in exchange of a 99 years lease of the remaining building space for office spaces, Facebook already rented it
@@leobragaurbe yeah they contributed tax payer money. How do you think they got the money in the first place. It's all one big racket.
amtrak has a lounge upstairs too. it now opened. Food, Wine, Bar, etc etc. Its for people traveling with a zRoom, or roomette i believe
looks amazing, but Grand Central is iconic! :D
It is nice to see nyc bringing Penn Station and lga into the 21st century. Also jfk is going to be updated too.
This place is giving me vibes of the World Trade Center Transit hub. At least if I decide to go to Washington DC via the Acela or take the LIRR, I won't have to go to that dingy place across the street.
Try out the Buffalo chicken wings in Jackson heights 86st called “wing kingdom” it was right next to the “San Antonia grocery” in your mexican food video in queens. The Buffalo super hot sauce they serve is super good. 10/10
Grand Central is the best, I saw a lot of contrition happening around that area, I hope its not getting ruined.
Great tour! I thought NJ transit would drop you off in the new hall. When I come to NYC I try to arrive at Newark airport and take the train into the city and take the subway to the hotel. I try the best I can NOT to look like a tourist! 😀😀😀. I admonish my friends when they take a taxi or Uber. You know, Penn Station opened in 1910 and closed and demolished in 1963. That’s 53 years. I think that’s how long MSG has been on the site. I recommend building a new MSG and tearing down the current one. Then build a new Penn. That is, at least a new roof!
🙌🏼 thanks
Que lugar Lindooo 😍
Its gonna be so congested with those escalators during peak train times...
I am very curious to see how that plays out.
agreed, as a LIRR daily commuter, i feel those escalators are too narrow. I hope the stairs are still there and there are new stairs on 9th ave side.
am i wrong in thinking they look too narrow?
i refer to the platform access
is there enough space for one person to stand and another to pass ?
@@patrickphair488 The problem is you can't make them any wider or they'd be wider than the platforms. But don't forget, these aren't the only escalators, as the underground Penn across the street is still very much there, even if Amtrak has moved their operations into the new hall, and the LIRR and NJ Transit are still the busier users.
@@davezanko9051 I can't wait for Penn Station to get even more congested when Metro-North comes in!
Def not better than GC but a great station none the less! I was there filming myself a few weeks ago. Great video. Thanks!
There is another huge art peice on the ceiling above an escalator that gets you the the street level, it shows a blueprint of new york on this huge dome, it was SO COOL! I just don't remember how we got to it, definitely instagram worthy!
Oh wow missed it!
Great video. We were on the Acela from DC last month and it took forever to
figure out how to get to the subway A-C-E lines heading uptown. Could
you could do a piece on that?
