    I can’t see why they haven’t added an additional service between Chicago and Cincinnati (Like the Lincoln Service which complements the Texas Eagle between Chicago and St. Louis, the Illini & Saluki which complement the City of New Orleans between Chicago and Carbondale, the Hiawatha Service which complements the Empire Builder between Chicago and Milwaukee and the Borealis which complements the Empire Builder between Chicago and St. Paul, with a light rail connection to Minneapolis). Both Indianapolis and Cincinnati are major cities and the Lafayette Metropolitan Area also has over 200 000 citizens. All of those see train service only 3 times a week. The segment limiting service to 3 times a week is between Clifton Forge and Orange, in Virginia, so it should be possible if they have the crew and rolling stock for it. This would also allow for the Cardinal to skip the smaller stations of Dyer, Rensselaer, Crawfordsville and Connersville, making for a faster trip between Chicago and NYC.

    Snacks in the firstclass lounge are a joke, you get better selection from an airline. I'm glad that the LsL cars are FINALLY updatd from the old moldy ones I traveled on years ago. Oh thanks for the heads up about getting a travel credit due to delay. This in the first time I ever heard of this and I've traveled by train a lot. By the way Amtrak still sucks compared to Europe.

  • @squalli1297
    @squalli1297 Před dnem

    Very informative!! During the '80's, Amtrak had a heritage sleeper car that went from L.A.-NYC which was placed behind the baggage car going East to N.O. I had to walk up interior stairs to get to the 2nd level & several cars to get to the Superliner Dining car. I didn't mind it. I could stay on board overnight in both directions in N.O. without the hassle of renting a hotel room or hanging out in the station. When I awakened the next morning, my sleeper car had already been switched onto the Northbound Cresent & underway. There were no complimentary meals on any of Amtrak's trains for any passenger, but fares were cheaper. There was a full-service dining car & separate lounge cafe car then & the food was good. Amtrak even had a Slumber Coach (spartan version of a Roomette) between NYC & Atlanta. With cutbacks, services were slowly eliminated. It was a huge disappointment when Amtrak eliminated the transcontinental thru sleeper car. I remember when the Viewliner I Sleeper cars were new. I still prefer the old single level heritage cars where murphy beds would let down over toilets in Roomettes. Getting up at night to void was a hassle unless I was in a Bedroom where the toilet & sink was enclosed with no shower. I can only reminisce.

Very enjoyable!

    This was a PANAM white elephant which is why they lowered the prices. Great if you need to be within walking distance of downtown. Otherwise you will need to transfer to the TTC which is another $3.50 What the article does not say, is the TTC run an express bus from the Airport to the subway system, every 5 minutes, from there there are no additional fares. So 9 + 3 for a 40 minute ride (15 minute wait + 25 minute journey) or 3.50 for a 1 hour ride that connects to all points of the city, not just downtown.

Birmingham, Ala. same same, but at least you have empty and decaying buildings to look at. BTW, those roomettes ain't cheap and you'll get shunted off into sidings more times than you'd like as freight trains have priority. Food was good though.

    Metuchen, NJ is derived from Chief Matouchin of the Raritan people who first lived in the area. Atlanta was founded in 1837 as the end of the Western & Atlantic Railroad line and was first named Marthasville in honor of the then-governor's daughter. It was nicknamed Terminus for its rail location, and then changed soon after to Atlanta, the feminine of Atlantic, as in the railroad! Charlottesville, Virginia is named after Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Queen of Great Britain and Ireland as the wife of King George III from their marriage in September 1761 until her death in 1818. Charlotte, North Carolina is named after the same person. The word "bayou" is thought to originate from the Choctaw word bayuk, which means "small stream". After first appearing in the 17th century, the term is found in 18th century accounts and maps, often as bayouc or bayouque, where it was eventually shortened to its current form. The Bayou Bartholomew is the longest bayou in the world. It’s so large, it stretches across both Arkansas and Louisiana, is 375 miles long, and boasts more than 100 different types of fish The first settlements of the Bayou Têche and other bayous were founded by the Louisiana Creoles.The term Créole was originally used by French Creoles to distinguish people born in Louisiana from those born elsewhere. Many Creoles are descendants of Acadians who were forcibly expelled from what's now maritime Canada by the British. Many went to France before later settling in Louisiana after the then Spanish Province of Louisiana government encouraged them to settle there to populate with more Catholic settlers. Union Passenger Terminal in New Orleans opened in 1954 and was built just west of the older New Orleans Union Station to consolidate the city's passenger rail operations. Previously, New Orleans had been served by five stations-Union Station, the Southern Railway Terminal, T&P Station, Louisiana & Arkansas Station, and Louisville & Nashville Station. New Orleans is derived from the original French name La Nouvelle-Orléans, which was given to the city in honor of Philippe II, Duke of Orléans, who served as Louis XV's regent from 1715 to 1723. The French city of Orléans itself is named after the Roman emperor Aurelian, originally being known as Aurelianum.

    Please explain that Amtrak doesn’t own the tracks; the freight companies do. That’s why the freight trains always get priority over Amtrak. Also, it’s funding comes from Congress; so blame your Congress person for the fact that it’s not as up-to-date as it could be.

      Having made more than a dozen sleeper trips I can tell you 80% of the small roomettes have a single occupant.couples I know either step out of the room so companion has privacy or use the communal john. Personally, I love having my own john,especially at night. Most people traveling together will get their own roomette.

      @@barbaraurban9824 i mean its just nasty in my opinion to do your business and have it linger in the air after that just having an open toilet in the room is byfar gross

      @@NortheastCorridorFilms I understand what you are saying however it isn't " open" there is no sitting water. It's vacuumed away like a plane. The large bedroom would be ideal for you since the john is a separate space within the bedroom. On sleepers that only have the communal john you are at the mercy of almost 16 people ,that they will use the john with care.if the john goes down,you will have to use one in an adjoining car. You need to weigh the pros and cons.

    Well done on a fun and informative trip to New Orleans [Lone Star]. (Apologies here, as I’ve forgotten your actual name). However, I do easily recall your 6ft 3in height even before you say it in the video. This gap in my memory not withstanding, I loved the small joke you made about the stubborn locos that just refused to couple until the third try. Thanks for doing this video for rail fans to enjoy and a special thanks for the nod to the Norfolk Southern manifest train. Keep up the great work, Anthony Attard

    I do want to try a trip west from my state to Dallas and then west to Washington State - I've never been farther than Tulsa Ok. or El Paso,Tx - I just want to see some of the other states before I get to old 😊 - guess I'll have to save some $$$ to make the trip

    I had to recheck the date of this video as I found it hard to believe that you recently had an entire consist of Viewliner I sleepers and none had even been refurbished yet. I have seen many Viewliner II sleepers on east coast trains (with their wood and burgundy & mauve paint scheme), as well as Viewliner I sleepers (with the ugly white interiors), but the vast majority of Viewliner I sleepers out there have already gotten rid of the classic Amtrak blue upholstery and once again have chosen to go with burgundy colored upholstery. I think you were just unlucky. ☹

      I think you're mistaking the new cars with a future refresh of the old ones. Amtrak hasn't started refreshing any of viewliner 1s, as they're still working on finishing the superliner refurbs.
