  • The 42-year-old driver involved in Monday's fatal multi-vehicle crash in Tampines has been handed four charges. Three of the charges Muhammad Syafie Ismail is facing relate to dangerous driving. The most serious offence -- causing death -- carries a jail term of up to eight years. In court, the prosecution said there may be additional charges as authorities await medical reports. Bail was set at $30,000 and a pre-trial conference is scheduled for 7 June. Syafie will be electronically tagged. He must report to the investigation officer when required. Nadirah Zaidi reports.

Singapore has done well to deter drug traffickers and rapists. However in handling reckless drivers, the penalty is no big deal to the rich offenders. They just throw money to engage the best lawyers. No problem with license suspension as they can afford to take cab. Moreover many like to think they won't be that unlucky for just a short moment of thrills. So without speed limiters, caning or life imprisonment, within the next few days history will repeat itself.

This driver Mohd Syafie Ismail and that of the AMG Merc were reckless. So 2 have died.
Can we imagine if there had been a bunch of school children crossing at that junction
that day and then what? He ploughs through them and takes another 10, 15 lives for
his act.... and then what? 2-8 years? The law cannot afford to be lenient on the recklessness
of these errant and irresponsible drivers - if we sentence lightly, it's not a fair or
reflective consequence for recklessness on our roads that kills. Drivers need to think
before they do anything rash. Or people get hurt / die.
Where is the driver of the AMG Merc who participated in the "race" leading up to the death of
2 innocent lives? He is complicit and should not be let off hook : his ass needs to be hauled
into court for sentencing too. If you want to race, or taunt others into a race, and people die
as a result of your taunt, your ass is on the firing line too, regardless of your car type.
I am a father myself and if someone took the lives of my children in this manner, there is no
leniency or pardon : it's a terribly irresponsible crime and it's normal for any affected families
to be angry and deeply pained by the loss of their loved ones. I think caning is also in order, to
remind offenders of their transgression in this reckless manner - not to repeat. Ban them from
driving for life. If we don't send out the right signals, people continue to take things too
lightly on the roads, for granted.
2-8 years is too lenient for the death of 2 innocent people who died because of Mohd Syafie
Ismail's need to speed up and race through the huge traffic light junction - it is hardly anything
for the sorrow and pain caused to both families who have lost their loved ones forever, suddenly.

If you guys have an observation eye.. Look carefully at the start of the video clip.. showing a white Mercedes in front of cam car… after a few distance.. Saab driver drove fast as he abruptly change lane into right lane in front of cam car.. and wanted to cut back to left lane..becoz there was a motorcycle road hogging on the right.. as soon as he goes back to left lane, the white Mercedes also step the accelerator tgt with Saab driver.. there is where he sideswiped the white Mercedes on the kerb. So after he left the scene of the accident between the white Mercedes and him. That is where he drove off as fast as possible to prevent from being caught by the number plate and that is where he lose focus on the road while focusing too much attention on the rear viewed mirrors checking on the white Mercedes as well as the motorcycle on the right. That was my point of view that I observed from that video..
Edit: Adding to that accident.. Did the victim wear seat belts?? If you clearly wear seat belts, chances of being flung out and underneath of the car is very rare.. becoz the seat belts designed to strap around ur both thighs and only ur body will lean forward or to the side depending on the impact of the accident. Failure to wear seatbelts is an offence and failure to wear seatbelts will have chances of being flung out of the vehicle..

People do get thrown into jail over small things that the prisons are overcrowded.
Then we have an actual person committing homicide who might only sit in jail for 8 years (maybe one third remission so he sits for 5 years and 3 months only) and is out on what 30000 bail?!
Our justice system will punish you for minor transgressions but is easy on you if you commit major ones like they are getting more lenient on drug trafficking, money laundering, sodomising and raping men, and of course driving recklessly causing death.

So, essentially, in your law, it's considered acceptable with only jail terms for a person to cause an accident resulting in someone's death, which can be avoided.
However, it's deemed unacceptable for an individual with a proven low IQ, who was coerced to trafficking drugs into Singapore, to face the death penalty under your justice system?
Such disparity paints a grim picture of an island nation with a flawed mindset.
