How I got 13 cavities (Reacting to when I ate raw)

  • Reacting to one of my old videos from 2012 detailing "how to avoid cavities on a raw food diet". Obviously this was when I was still eating a "fully raw" diet (low fat, high carb, lots of fruit 80/10/10 style). Sometimes it's good to see how far we've come. Sometimes it's terribly awkward and embarrassing and hilarious.

    To be clear, I wasn't criticizing myself for not wearing makeup. That's perfectly fine (although everyone does look better with some amount of makeup, including men). I was just poking fun at wearing nothing but color on my lips. It looks weird. :)

      I think this is an opinion, honestly. I am not advocating what Freelee does with no shaving and no shampoo, but recently I was surprised she thought she had to wear fake eyelashes and get expensive hairdos. For some people maybe just wearing cute skirts or doing something with their hair enhances their appearance. Makeup is also an extra cost, and then there is the worry of figuring out if all this stuff is ethical or not.

    • @annafreitag9498
      @annafreitag9498 Před 6 lety +32

      If someone looks better with or without makeup is a subjective value judgment... also it's kinda silly to say it's fine not to wear make-up but not fine to wear make-up in a specific way (as in just lips and nothing else)? Like, either you wear make-up correctly or not at all, is that now the rule? How about each to their own? Also, it was really off-putting that you said you weren't aware that most women groom their eyebrows and how silly it was of you not knowing and adhering to that "rule".

      Anna Toor im gonna have to agree with Swayze. People do look better with something, thats why makeup exists. Nobody wants the tired, droopy eye look, so people wear concealer. Nobody is saying you have to or that you are ugly, but the eye responds to balance and symmetry in a face and makeup helps with that.

      You may have become habituated (aka addicted) to cooked food. I have the opposite experience, I don't feel filled eating soft food. I need crunchy, brittle or tough foods to chew, such as raw broccoli, raw carrots, raw cabbage, raw cauliflower, raw pumpkin, raw melon or watermelon with their peel (I eat most fruits and vegetables with their peel, such as kiwi fruit, ripe banana, orange, cucumber, apple), mixes of sliced raw vegetables, nuts, etc.
      I do eat some cooked food such as beans, peas, lentils, artichoke, aubergine/eggplant, onion (also raw), sweet potato, cereals, some fermented food such as tempeh, soy sprouts, soy milk, yogurt, steamed or marinated seafood and milled seeds (raw flaxseeds, chia seeds, sesame seeds). But none of those foods makes me feel really filled. I need something raw and tough to chew.

But one thing I will say about Kristina - even though she's still "fullyraw" she does seem to eat a lot more fat these days (thank the lord!) all of her dressing are very fat rich in nuts, seeds & avocados.. Don't think she's 80 10 10 at all anymore ? • @laurieparis2203
      @laurieparis2203 Před 6 lety +17

      ala Dentistry is an art, not a science. Xrays aren't math, they are open to interpretation. A new young patient coming to a dentist who states they are a fruitarian, not using fluoride , hasn't been to the dentist in a while, is fruit ripe for the picking. And yes, if you're not using fluoride, you can get some remineralization of soft teeth thru a product like Gelcam, flossing, waterpicking, bringing one's calcium up to the RDA, changing the mouth's ph to alkaline, using a soft bristle brush after enamel has hardened thru fluoride, supplying saliva with extra calcium ions thru mouth rinses or Recalcident or chewing gum with xylitol. Eating Natto, or taking vitamin K2. Rechecking teeth after 6 months of intensive treatment, with another dentist.
      Or you can have your dentist drill holes in your teeth, settling you up for a lifetime of dentistry. Your choice! 🌱

    • @laurieparis2203
      @laurieparis2203 Před 6 lety +3

      Christina My philosophy is that if someone stands to profit from ignorance and fear, there's always the possibility for unnecessary procedures to be foisted onto the unsuspecting patient. That enamel can't be rehardened, is a fallacy. Bc the cycle of softening and rehardening happens every time time you eat. Which is why it's recommended to rinse your mouth after eating, or chew a piece of Xylitol gum, after eating... wait about 30-60 minutes to brush.
      Sorry you had such an unpleasant experience! Hopefully your experience will save others the same fate. 🌱

  • @LizKcer
    @LizKcer Před 6 lety +95

    OMG! I am a dentist and from your Xrays that you show of your 13 cavities I just see teeth that are fine...almost fine. Maybe a few reaaaly small enamel cavities between the teeth, that are almost impossible to see without Xrays. None of your teeth have cavities that reached the dentin...damn, I think your dentist was a little over zealous. Also, I don't think the raw food had anything to do with those cavities because this kind of cavities usually develop over many years, but get discovered very late...I am sure that the first dentist you went to said your teeth are fine because he didn't have you do any Xrays, but I am sure your cavities were there for a long time, and were probably stagnant. For people on a raw food diet I would also recommend rinsing with water after eating fruit and avoid dried fruit that sticks to your teeth. If you have a ton of floride in your water supply you can use a toothpaste without floride (in my coutry the water does not have enough floride). Anyway, the raw food diet is not really that bad for your teeth. You get fructose from fruit, but not processed sugar from candy. Also, if you eat fruit that is not very soft, like an apple, for exaple, that is in a way "mechanically cleaning" the teeth. But hey, don't take my word for it! Look at dental studies.

    • @LizKcer
      @LizKcer Před 6 lety +4

      Not all fruit...just don't eat a lot of oranges/tagerines/grapefruit at a time, because of the acid (the human saliva actually can neutralize small quantities of acid...not large quantities). If you eat sticky dried fruit make sure that after you finish eating it none of it remains on your teeth (you can brush your teeth with or without toothpaste, you can use a toothpick, etc.)...or just avoid if you can't "unstick" it.

      Brushing ur teeth right after eating anything, let along acidic fruit, will strip more enamel away from the teeth...so NOT a good idea. Best to just use a mouthwash of some sort. I use filtered water with a sugar alcohol like xylitol or erythritol. Wait at least 45 min to an hour after eating before u brush or put anything abrasive on ur teeth so they have a chance to remineralize and neutralize the acids!
      Also fluoridated (hydrofluorosilicic acid, a chemical fertilizer byproduct) water has no proven benefit for oral health and causes neurotoxicity in rat and human studies.

    @mandelade Před 6 lety +39

    as a dental student I just want to tell you that remineralising is a thing. It's a physiological process and it's actually the way fluoride prevents cavities. Acids dissolve the enamel to some degree and the minerals found in saliva remineralise it. That's why cavities that haven't reached the dentin can actually be reversed if the patient is being compliant :)

      @mandelade Před 3 lety +2

      @@Goodthoughtlol Dont worry about that stuff. Make sure you get enough calcium (again mostly for other health reasons, osteoporosis is much more concerning than cavities would be). I think the biggest issue is vegans falling into the trap of not using fluoridation and high acid, high sugar snacks (like fruit). Try to stick to three meals and a snack instead of constantly snacking, use fluoridated tooth paste, floss and see your dentist twice a year and you’ll be fine. And yes I’m vegan and know plenty of vegans that do not have tons of cavities. Translucent tips shouldn’t be from a lack of calcium and rather from acid erosion or grinding.

I had to buy a couple very expensive creams from the dermatologist to heal it. My boyfriend is super allergic to floride. Whenever he uses floride toothpaste his gums bleed profusely.
    I feel like my teeth are cleaner now that I use floride free toothpaste. I have always taken really good care of my teeth. I am a brush your teeth 2-3 times a day kind of girl.

    As soon as you have more sugar in the diet the plaque actually gets thicker, as the sugar sticks to the bacterial colonies and becomes part of the biofilm. I have difficulty with patients (I'm a RDH) who brush, floss perfectly using Colgate or whichever regular toothpaste they like but refuse to change their sugary diet - and keep coming back with recurrent tooth decay or demineralisation that remains rough and chalky. The plaque is ALWAYS going to be more difficult to remove and I doubt most people even floss and most brush for 30 seconds... not 2-3 minutes.

I did go for regular check-ups, flossed and rinsed after every meal (usually 2 per day) and used homemade toothpaste (flouride-free) morning and night. I always get comments from the dentist on how little tarter I have on my teeth, and I haven't had any new cavities in the past decade. So, I guess I got lucky, or my general toothcare routine helped me out. It's definitely probably a combination of factors, not all attributed to diet. :-)

I didn't agree with your perspective a couple of years ago but as I continued to take courses in chemistry, biology, genetics, etc. I gained a better understanding of how our body works and learned how to do my own research to make better dietary decisions. I still have my feelings but I'm glad I fell off from that belief system too haha.

    Hi there. The teeth health is my major problem on the vegan diet. I was on ketogenic diet for two years and my teeth were plaque free and it felt I didn't need to brush them at all and my dentist always commented my teeth looked super clean. I am a newbie to vegan diet and I feel I need to brush them after every meal as the sugar from fruit and starch from grain and potatoes are making a proper mess !!!! I wish more vegan promoters spoke about this, same what you do. Thank you for being honest and helping me on my vegan journey, that has been really really tough. My experienced vegan friends have no understanding for my vegan challenges at all. They just deny all my problems and say it can't be vegan food related !

      And you should probably rinse your mouth out with water (or water mixed with a bit of baking soda) after eating and wait an hour or more before brushing. Also remember to floss and use mouthwash.

    This video is about cavities and health! Why is make up brought into this?! Every time someone isn’t wearing makeup someone has to judge that! You look fine without makeup so no real need to address it or should somebody write why aren’t you or anybody else isn’t wearing makeup! I use Fluoride free toothpaste(Tom’s of Maine). I went to the dentist a couple years ago and the dentist said I had Cavities all in my teeth! Even though I brush my teeth twice a day and rinse my mouth out after I eat, I couldn’t understand how that could be! I was drinking soda at that time and decided to give it up by cutting down until I didn’t drink it at all! I went back to the dentist in about year or so, can’t exactly remember after going from the time dentist told me and I asked the dentist do I still cavities in all my teeth? She said, No! She Either made a mistake or being the cavities were so small the holes closed up and healed! My best advice on if you’re eating a raw diet or consuming a lot of fruit is brush your teeth 2 or 3 times day until your last meal! Even rinse your mouth out with water after each time eating! I think that should help! Soda on the hand is if you drink a lot of it everyday like 4 or 5 cans, brushing your teeth will not really help b/c the acidity and sugar in the soda will be to much for your body to get rid of it at one time and your teeth and bones will be affected by it after awhile, regardless you brushing it out of your teeth, the damage is coming from within!

    I used fluoride free toothpaste for 6 months and ended up with 2 cavities. I go to the dentist regularly and I was taking an acid reflux med, but that is the most cativities I ever had in one year.
    Now I use a low fluoride toothpaste, floss at least once a day (they do sell vegan floss on Amazon, RADIUS ), use my natural mouthwash ( pinch of baking soda, water, and drops of peppermint) 1-2 x per day. Rinse with water after drinking coffee, foods, and chew sugar free gum after meals. Haven't had a cavity in over a year.

    • @sweetbeep

      Anti reflux med decreases absorption of nutrients including magnesium which is important for teeth.
