- Downtown Whitefish, Montana and fellow bikepackers share their bikepacking gear setups!
This is a REST DAY of my first bikepacking learn as I go adventure!
In this episode I chill out white taking Lee to the train station and explore downtown Whitefish, Montana. I meet many bikepackers at the cycling section of the Whitefish Campground who share their equipment and routes. Tom wants to join me on a mountain bike trail! He's never gone and his bike is in terrible shape.

The 'young lady' in the opening scene ... LOOOOVE her!! Her bike trip experience must've been so awesome!!
Whitefish looks like a super cool town... along the lines of your video of Missoula, too. So cool!
Riiiiiiight?! Happy you enjoyed her as much as I did. A unique encounter for sure! I had no idea of Whitefish so it was a wonderful surprise. Although it's a posh ski resort town - it's still restaurant price friendly so the regular folks can afford to sit down and eat too! YAY!

Wow...getting better every vid.
I try! Thank you!
Love the story about the lady at the beginning of this video.
I love comments like yours as they make me go back and re-watch certain sections that bring a smile to my face as well!
Great video, always a fun time. Boo Ya.
Thank you! 👊
Wonderful!!
Good to see You helping Tom with his drivetrain and bike.. Good stuff. :)))
Awesome to hear! Thanks for watching!
👌♥️
Love you're videos. Binge watched yesterday up to this video. Felt inspired to go for a ride this morning. Bit cold being in the UK but I really enjoyed it. I am planning some long trips for summer. So glad you put these up. Looking forward to what's next. Thanks Naomi.
Binging my videos? Oh gosh - and no migraine? 🤣 That humbles me - truly! And you went out in the cold! Cheers to you! I look forward to hearing what trip you take! Thank you for such kind support! 😄
Love it from the boys on the torture bikes, to the 40s something steel bellies, and the bikes of Northern routes. And your heart. I am taking a day off to go Billings to pick up the puzzle bike repair that defeated me a few months ago. The mechanic loved it when he solved it. You story reminded me to drop some good spare saddles I have around town when I randomly see a bike in need. And a cheap multi tool with it,
"And your heart" made my heart sigh. Thank you! As always I love your video summary. So what was the repair? Saddles - ya - who knew?! I've always taken mine for granted! Now I'll drop any bike stuff at the homeless shelter instead of Goodwill!
@@HumanontheLoose And you are so welcome. I built a winter specific utility bike from frame out (80's MTB) and I have a problem getting the shifter to mesh on a new to me internal hub drive. Now ready for grocery and brews in Wyoming winter.
Coffee plus Naomi plus Montana (a place I need to visit) plus warm weather video. this is shaping up to be a good day !!
What a nice message! Thanks for watching Coco! (Nice new bio pic!)
@@HumanontheLoose Haha. You noticed?
Going over the alps on a three speed must have been difficult. I did it on a 10 speed but I was much younger. That was 1986. I went across France and Belgium, into Germany, south to Munich.I started climbing the Alps just south of Munich and I went into Austria and over the Brenner pass. Down into Venice. I took the train back to Preston Lancashire in England. There I cycled the lake district and over to Scotland. I got the ferry to Larne in northern Ireland. I cycled the north Antrim coast over to dairy. I stayed in Derry a while in the Bogside. It was an Irish Republican army strong hold then. I got the train and the ferry back to Scotland. I cycled around the lake district and back to London. From London I flew back to Florida. In those days the UK Was great for hosteling. I stayed in hostels many times. I did some camping also.
You know what John - your posts on my videos are like sub-chapters to your book - you know - the book you're going to start writing so we can all enjoy the details which go with these astounding cycling feats you've embarked on! Amazing! Just amazing!
@@HumanontheLoose The manuscript is about 150,000 words. One of these days I will be ambitious and publish.
@@HumanontheLoose You are the one doing the cycling feats These days. You are easy on the eyes so we are always waiting for a new video.
Well done that was some adventure
I once set up camp in the dark, in a what seemed like a peaceful campground near whitefish lake (I think - a lake outside of Whitefish). Some time in the middle of the night the ground started to vibrate and shake increasing in magnitude until it became clear was train arresting y o a tracks out 100 feet from the tent. Helluva place for a campground. Anyway, I enjoy your openness and honesty and the way you engage with people along your journey
So you can relate! Ya - my thoughts on this campground. Although the waterfront beach, reachable mountain bike trail and downtown may override. Thank you for your kind feedback - always helpful to hear!
John Wullschleger, There is nothing like camping next to a railroad track. I was looking at a video of some rail trails. The big point of the rail trails was they had free campgrounds and running water or at least pumped water. I thought to myself if it is free there must be a catch. So as the video proceeded it turned out that these free campgrounds were next to a railroad track. Trains going by all hours of the day and night he is not conducive to a good nights rest. And Walmart they have these little plastic boxes containing two sets of earplugs. They pretty much block out just about all noise, not counting the noise inside your own head. I camped in a campground next to a railroad track. That same night I also stepped on a Bed of ants. It was a sleepless night.
Whitefish looks so old west🤠 Love it!
It does! Love it too!
Alright, I really loved this video! Between all the cool people you met and the ride you went on this video had parts that had me in stitches!! A real fun video!! I even had to laugh at that poor deathtrap of a bike. I felt bad but at the same time I had to laugh. Although if that's what his bike is like he definitely shouldn't get a Harley or any other motorcycle. Lol I've had Harleys most of my life, you treat them like that and he would be sorry.
Bottom line, another Winner Winner Chicken Dinner of a video, love it!!!
P.S. I can't believe Tom's chain was that old and hadn't broken yet!! 👀 I put a new one on every season! Lol. And I almost forgot, the Lady that pedaled long distance when she was young? Incredible.
I guess that means I should have chicken tonight! 😉 Thrilled it brought laughs to your day! I think we all laughed with a loving heart at Tom’s bike! I don’t think he pedals hard enough for the chain to bust.
@@HumanontheLoose I never thought about the fact Tom might not pedal hard enough to break the chain. Now that he has a job maybe he might spend a couple bucks on some badly needed maintenance. Lol
Over the Alps on a three speed? Can you imagine the levels of chafing they must have experienced? 😆. You said 60 miles and I think she suffered al little PTSD.
Don't you want to try it now to see what it would feel like? 😉 "60 miles...PTSD" 😂
@@HumanontheLoose I’ll see you there. To keep it a period correct experience do we need to wear cutoff jeans and “hang loose” t-shirts?
Absolutely! I’ll even bring some pedals with toe clips!
@@HumanontheLoose To be clear, those folks were / are made of stronger stuff than I. 😊

YES! Thank you for sharing that!
"So easy is a beautiful smile
Encapsulated in the bubble of Impermanence
feeding uncertainty each moment
I live with a staccato of stitches under a carapace of courage
I move on as faith pulls my wagon of life
like leaves that wither away and
blooms that waft fragrance
I see many, each in their wagon
some sophisticated, some simple
on journeys that knows not whats ahead.
I pause to smile, to greet
few smile back while some look away,
A hello, a simple smile melts pain and grief,
mutes sorrows for a while
softens the depth of uncertainty
these need no pretence,
Its like a candle flame, going on to blaze, dispelling darkness
a twinkle in the eyes and mouth curving up, all it takes to smile, a beautiful smile to say hello!"

Wonder if The Remington is still there.
Naomi stock, should you ever happen to be cycling in South Florida, you can always stay here a while and rest. However, you would also have many invitations from others. Just saying.
Thank you kindly John!
Hi Are you tracking your route anywhere (strava kamoot etc) I can download the GPX files.
Yes. The Strava link is in the description for each video/day.
