    Nice video.
It’s one of the few jobs on a bike you must have the correct tool for! The remover is the also the old Shimano pattern which was also Regina and a few others. There were lots of removers over the years and no one was standard.
These blocks are 40 years old now. They can be well goosed so I’ve never really removed them with a view to reusing. Normally they are being scrapped, but still need to be removed.
With the way he removes them, there is a very thin flat above each pawl which he grabs in the vice. He implies that there is but it’s really difficult to see. Be very careful when grabbing it in a vice. It can slip out worn and misshapen jaws. What can also happen is that you grab the gap the pawls sit in which is just below it. This is actually an absolutely brilliant way of getting enough purchase to remove the body and works every time, especially if you remove the pawls. However it is only recommended if it is being scrapped. The pawl location holes are fragile and crushing of the body is inevitable!
The bearings are 1/8” which is handy to know if you lose a few. It’s inevitable. They’re dirt cheap so don’t worry. The rule ought to be to have an odd number of balls each side. This prevents a stress riser because there is always a diametrically opposite ball in the way. It's an old engineering maxim when you're dealing with small balls. Another rule when you're using smaller balls is to stick them in side by side and remove the last one to prevent crowding. I think engineering must have once been a rather select and frustrated lifestyle.
Be warned. Reassembly is fiddly! Maybe he does this in another video. I hope he does, cos it's gonna get greasy and messy for the uninitiated.
However, being here, now, the bearing adjustment was by a load of very thin shims, if any, packed under the top plate ( the one with the punch holes, the writing saying Atom and the left hand thread ) which was tightened down onto the body. Bear in mind this was all calculated and done when pristine and new and not old and well used. Because of the fiddly nature of refitting umpteen balls, getting clumped with grease onto your fingers, and getting everywhere plus the aspect of effectively non adjustable bearings, (because of the limitations of the shims; the seemingly impossibility of calculating end float and obtaining shim material coupled with and the propensity of them to escape every time you look at them) it really is a pain after so many decades, and hardly worthwhile, except in times of desperation.
Such as being an immortal while stranded on an asteroid.

you described the flats above the pawls much better, until i read your post i had not found them, but now it's all apart, and i can re-grease everything and put it back together now, LOL thx

    anything on reassembly?
I have the atom bte SGDG five speed from a Raleigh. Any help is greatly needed as I've removed it, lost two bearings so far, and those spring loaded clips I can only imagine using a tape that I may be able to pull out after assembly.

@@shatterator Yes, I too have 78 balls. I think Mr. Franko's count is missing one.

      SEE EDIT!!!
I have 77, from an Atom 77 non-compact. 32 in one race and 45 in the other, although I'm not 100% certain that I didn't mix up some between the races
Edit: You should have seen the look on my face when my father walked in with the box I disassembled the wheel above, holding the 78th ball bearing...
Luckily I was just done packing the lower bearing(near the locking ring) and I'm pretty sure the 78th one belongs to the not-near-the-locking ring bearing. This makes 32 and 46.
