- Hello people, here I show you how to disassamble the Maillard cassette/ freewheel of a Peugeot bike from the 80s.
A last tip: if you want to change the bearings, then always change them all. Otherways the bearings may have slightly different diameters and the thickest gets the pressure alone ...
The diameter of the bearings should be (as far as I know) 1/8 Zoll, 3,175mm, please messure again yourself!!
The tool to open the freewheel: Kemper No. 2650

Thank you, thank you, thank you. Yours is the most useful, detailed description on how to service a Maillard freewheel on the internet. You’ve enabled me to complete the restoration of my wife’s 35 year old bike.
Extremely helpful! Thank you soooooo much for making it. I was struggling to find any info on the Millard freewheel! You made my day!
This was a great guide while servicing a 1986 Maillard Normandy freewheel from my Peugeot.
For anyone looking to do this, the only part not shown here is actually using the two chain whips to unscrew the two outer cogs from the rest, you should be warned that they will be very tight. You can leave the freewheel on the hub to get better leverage with your two whips.
I also got the Kemper freewheel tool from velo-classic and it worked like a charm.
Thats true, I had recently also a case where it was very hard to loosen it. I would recommend in these cases to put it for some days into a pot of diesel or petroleum to weaken it
Dear friend, that was brilliant! I finally found the tool that doesn't cost 30€. Also the procedure is clear and understandable. THANKS!
That link to the Velo-classic website was invaluable, and so is this video! Solved all my problems, vielen Dank.
Thank You very clear. Nice camera work. You give me the confidence to head into this dark area of french bicycle repair
Perfect! Just what I needed to see to service my Maillard freewheel.
Thank you - very clear and a great video to watch before embarking on my first Maillard freewheel restoration disassembly/clean/grease/reassembly operation. In my case its from a 1960s Sun (a TI brand by then I think, along with Raleigh, etc) bike that I'm rescuing from a metal skip. I just need to find my spare chain whip!
The only video to be found on how to do this. I watched this numerous times before and during the disassembly of mine. Thanks for the warning about the 90 ball bearings!
Thank you Franko, this information is exactly what I needed.
Thank you for making this video.
Super Video! Vielen Dank, es hat mir bei der Restauration meines Rennrads sehr geholfen.
I've never seen the inside of a Maillard freewheel. It'd nice to see what's in it BEFORE it falls apart in your hand, haha. Thanks for the heads up on that left hand thread!
Awesome video, calm and instructive, now i know how to deal with my freewheel. Thank you sir !
UK viewers, tool is made by Var, product ‘var RL-40500’. Not cheap at £18, but seems solid.
Great tutorial, worked like a charm, thanks!
Instead of using 2 chain whips I carefully screwed the freewheel to a block of wood in several places around the biggest cog, then held the wood steady in a vice. This meant I had both hands free and could put my body weight behind the handle of the chain whip as it’s difficult to release initially.
Хорошее решение, а вот у нас съёмник к Maillard вообще нереально приобрести!😢
Wish I had watched this one first! Tried following a number of other tutorial videos that required using a whip chain wrench, but that was an exercise in futile frustration since the 'lock ring' is integral with the cassette assembly! If I had been able to get enough force on the chain whip against the 24 tooth tool, it would have broken one tool or the other, and/or ruined the whole assembly. Mine is a 'Made in France' Sachs Maillard assembly, essentially like this one, using the same tool (had to order from a seller in Bulgaria which took about a month to arrive in the USA). I did finally figure out this technique on my own after exhausting the other possible methods. Glad though to confirm that I did it right in the end. :/
Excellent video, thank you!
Very helpful. Thank you!
Thanks, super helpful on my rebuild friend☺️
Tanks for Velo Classic end Freilauf Abnehmer "KEMPER" D=31.4/29.2mm, brüniert, für Maillard Normandy
Grazie mille Antonio da Milano 💛👋🏻👋🏻
Thanks!!!
3:35 Can you take apart the cogs before taking the freewheel off the wheel? That way I could use force from the bike pedals instead of buying an extra chain whip.
Update: Yes it works, put the bike chain on the 2nd largest cog and the chain whip on the 2nd smallest cog. Use pressure on the pedal to slightly unscrew the cogs, then take the chain whip off and put the bike chain on the smallest cog, remove the wheel and proceed as described
Excellent idea, thanks!!!!
Sehr nützlich. Sockel bei velo-classic gekauft. Danke.
Très utile. Douille achetée chez velo-classic. Merci, du Québec.
3:50 i cant remove that. can you suggest something?
@@EduardsESA If you don't have a vise, leave the tire on the wheel. Use an adjustable wrench at the end of a pipe, for more torque. Hold the wheel in vertical position with your left hand. Put your weight (belly) on the wheel while pushing down the pipe+wrench with your right hand to unscrew the cassette.
can you remove it from the wheelset using the bb tool?
Great vid. I absolutely hate Maillard freewheels as they seem to quickly get a dirty 'gritty' feeling, and I was wondering how best to strip and clean them!
Thank you a lot! I recently got a late 80s Peugeot semi-racing bike for free and was looking to restore it, but had no clue how you could take appart the freewheel.
Could you link the tool you used? From the part number I couldn't find anything.
Thanks again!
It´s a tool by "Kemper", Tool- Nr. 2650, you can find it at ebay or at "www.velo-classic.de" (about 10 euro)
@@frankofranko7888 Thanks!
I am very impressed by your video. My worry now is that I won't be able to obtain the removal tool. Do you have any advice ? Many thanks.
You could try to remove first the two smaller cogwheels. Then you could try to get grip to the freewheel forceps. No guarantee ... :)
Thankyou for your reply. I discovered that the freewheel is a Helicomatic type-------a beautiful design, & in fact reasonably easy to remove with a large grip tool. The hub (& freewheel) is now removed, so that a more flexible Shimano hub & freewheel can be incorporated into the excellent Mavic rim & spokes. The 6 speed 12-24 Maillard is too high geared to take me up the hills of the Pennines, I need at least a 30 tooth gear. I'm 68....... If you know of anyone who wants the Maillard hub & freewheel, I'll be happy to send it for modest cost. The ebay prices are absurd.
Otherwise it will simply lie in my workshop ....... @@frankofranko7888
Thank you very helpful how to remove and what tool i need now i can do the job.

Hello. Why do you disassamble the axle of the hub ?
I think you are right, there is no absolut need to ...
@@frankofranko7888
Normally, the axle can pass through the tool. Watch my video

Great video ! Thanks a lot my friend !
can you open the maillard normandy sprocket with a box BB key?
I havent tried, but I dont thinks so.
Hi Franko, maybe you know. I have a Maillard 05 86 freewheel rear hub. How many and what size of balls were used for the hub?
No sorry, I have no idea about this particular Maillard hub
I used 2x45 balls, 3,175 mm or 1/8 Zoll
Hello, where I can find the freewheel removal for Maillard freewheel?
look at ebay, "remover 2650" or "abzieher 2650"
I used the tool 2650 from factory Kemper/Germany
I have found an english website with a tool and its much cheaper than ebay. www.bankruptbikeparts.co.uk/vintage-maillard-type-bike-freewheel-remover-mechanics-extractor-removal-tool-bbp2210464?search=Tools&page=3
it's freewheel sachs maillard?
sachs and maillard became later one factory, so sachs-maillard could be the same like maillard ...
