  • In this video, I try to explain to the best of my knowledge how to convert a 7 speed hub to a 8, 9 or 10 speed. I felt some information surrounding this was generally lacking, in particular the types of freewheels. More so, I’ve read countless times people claiming that the wheel does not need to be dished, which is not the case.
Feel free to add suggestions, as I’m sure some stuff might have been left out

Thanks for this! It's great to see some of these options, keeping these vintage bikes going!

Yes its fun to work with wheels, hubs, spokes. I have also rebuilt a lot of wheels.
Tip: with a lathe you can re-grind the pitted bearing hubs and conus but then you have to use new steel bals.

Road bike 7 speed rear axle hub spacing is usually 126mm, not 135mm. Mountain bikes do start at 135mm for 7 speed, so this method will only work for mountain bikes.

Nice thank you for this. I've been meaning to do this on my Pulstar hubs. Should be the same procedure ang all right?

Thank you for an informative video.
You'll be pleased to know that an old dog like me can learn new tricks, in particular the ball bearing extraction using a HD magnet 👍.
I'm a stubborn ol' bugger, I've been using my beloved XT thumbies on an 8 speed cassette. It does work with the extra click, as I'm sure you well know, but I'm having to fine tune it too often.
So I'm going to downgrade back to a 7 speed cassette.
Now where did I put that spacer?
    Cheers mate. 👍

Someone suggested on my xt thumshifter video, the possibility of dremeling an extra groove (interior plate) to make a real 8th click. I recall checking if it was possible, can’t remember…food for thought

If you can put an 8-speed on, it will also take up to 11-speed. Don't have to stop at 10.

It can go up to 12 speeds if you want to buy a cassette out of the Shimano ecosystem. Lots of manufacturers make 12 speed HG cassettes, I've installed them numerous times

well this answers two of my wheels.. but I'm looking at my 2021 norco indie 4 and an 8 speed 26" wheel with a joyride hub and wondering

Quick search : norco indie 4 is set up with a 1X7 drive train. Joyride hubs seem to be Single speed?

If it has a 8 speed cassette, it likely will hold 9/10 speed. I tried 11 speed recently, only issue was tightening the locknut. The tool couldn’t go deep enough to properly tighten (its another video coming eventually)@@the_nondrive_side
