    • @barefootbob1269
      @barefootbob1269 Před 3 lety +1

      @@SolLignum Yes there are some options in that area. A note of caution is with that comes some weird gear spacing.For example on an 11-46 8 speed sprockets would be 11-13-16-22-28-34-40-46 which means a fairly dramatic change from one gear to the next. That same cassette in an 11 speed would have a better transition between gears my 11-46 runs 11-13-15-18-21-24-28-32-36=40-46 just gives you a tighter ratio. I am a big guy at 270 riding a fat bike and have some steep climbs here in the northeast and combo works great for me. I am running a 32t oval up front.

    But, you really need a lot more torque on the lock ring than that. The friction from sandwiching the cogs and spacers together helps distribute the load from pedaling and prevents those nasty dings on the hub body, or something like that.
    Also "dork" disks are actually really good, especially if you swap wheels with frequency or might bang your derailleur when riding (say for cyclocross, etc). And that might explain why you still see them show up consistently on some higher end wheels. I didn't learn that the hard way, nah... RIP my rear tubular wheel spokes.

    • @fantaz_official
      @fantaz_official Před 2 lety

      Dork disc are actually required by law, or maybe its a manufacturer standard. Its a safety thing so people who dont know to adjust their derailleur dont get a chain caught in the wheel.

    Cool upgrade, yeah I'd been wondering if an old 8/9 spd hub could support the newer cassettes. I think they add more gears by making the chain narrower, so that's probably why it's compatible.

    • @andrewince8824
      @andrewince8824 Před 2 lety +4

      Yep. That's exactly how it's done. A 7 speed chain is 7mm wide at the pins, a 12spd chain is about 5.1mm wide at the pin. But, the plates are pretty much the same thickness which is where the confusion and up until recently skepticism about narrower chains came from. For a fair while people were worried a narrower 12spd chain would be weaker. While they aren't as tough they're still solid and despite my best efforts, still haven't snapped one.

    You might have been able to even keep the old derailleur since the shift lever is what actually controls how much cable is taken in or let out with each shift. You just have to adjust the high and low set screws on the derailleur assuming it's a compatible shimano.

      This is only true if you're using a friction style shift mechanism. The shift spacing for 8,9,10 ect are all slightly different. Yes you can extend the travel of your derailleur, but you won't have smooth shifts into every gear using the wrong shifter.

  • @andrewince8824
    @andrewince8824 Před 3 lety +2

    If it's of any help, the Shimano HG Spline driver is a standardised part. Cassettes are designed to fit it and that is why 6/7/8 speed chains are about 7mm wide at the pin but 12 speed chains are about 5.1mm at the pin. The Cassettes are all the same thickness, the rings are slimmer and tighter spaced to allow for more speeds in the same space.
    Campagnolo have started to produce a 13 speed for roadies. That set up uses a 4.9mm chain to further allow the cassette to fit within a standardised hub space.
    Shimano micro-spline and SRAM XD drivers are now complicating the market but they still hold the same cassette width, they just make the driver diameter smaller to accommodate a 10t ring, HG spline can only fit an 11t at the smallest.
    If you're upgrading an older bike the real hang up will likely be the Bottom Bracket. Chuck that square taper, Octalink of ISIS spline in the bin, we're now in the world of SRAM DUB, 24mm and 30mm two-piece cranksets. This is the area which can mess up would be 1x newcomers as a 2x or 3x crankset will not give a good chainline and 10, 11 and 12 speed really need a narrow-wide chainring to work properly.
    My personal recommendation is pricey but worthwhile for ease and quality. Buy a SRAM NX Eagle 11-50t cassette for about $100 then fork out a further $300 or so for the SRAM GX Eagle groupset. You'll get the entire 12 speed drivechain in one easy go plus it uses the DUB Bottom Bracket system. This is great if you have an older BB shell which may not fit some of the newer cranks too well. If you can get an XD driver for your hub, do so and omit the NX cassette, the 10-50t GX cassette gives you a better range however requires the previously mentioned driver.

    • @andrewince8824
      @andrewince8824 Před 2 lety +1

      @@toothlessboss if it's going on a HG spline then it should do. Just make sure the hub body and cassette use the same spline interface. Both SRAM and Shimano recently(ish) made new standard bodies for their 12 speed and top-end kit. Most cassettes are still HG though.
      The one thing to look out for is a spacer that some freehubs have. It's between the cassette and hubshell on the freehub body and it's just there to ensure limited range cassettes (often 9 speed or less) are indexed for the best chainline. That needs to come off for an 11spd.

    You've given me hope! Is that the SLX M7000? I just ordered that set and hope to install on 8 speed Specialized 2006 Cross Roads Sport. The hub on the bike now is 8 speed FH-RM30 with a Shimano CS-HG30i cassette. I hope I have the same luck. If you have any tips or knowledge let me know. Thanks for the vid

    Just an FYI for anyone reading, the Shimano HG hub, usually known as the "8-10 speed hub" (as you see on the bike in this video) will normally fit any mountain bike cassette 8-12 speed that is made for this standard of hub. Some earlier versions of the hub won't fit 10 speed+, but that's from the late 90s, early 2000s. Now, the catch is that this hub will not work with standard 11 speed road cassettes. They need the specific 11 speed Shimano HG hub with the extra space to fit. Since I'm already on this tangent, there are 11 speed road cassettes that will fit the mountain bike sized HG hub, but they have to list that they are "8-10 speed hub" compatible in the specifications.
