Erling Haaland is a shrewd operator for Man City. Despite his lack of touches in a game, he still managed to score 36 goals in the Premier League last season. But why does he barely get involved across 90 minutes? JJ Bull explains

One of these days Haaland is going to score 5 goals with only 5 touches 😂
Will he do it in 9 minutes tho? 😎
I think Hugo Sanchez did something similar
Hugo Sanchez scored 38 goals with 38 touches
3 touches = 5 goals😂
@@manashpratimc9327Not in one game tho 💀
Haaland said it himself. His dream is to score 6 goals in 6 touches.
17 touches and 4 G/A tonight 😅😅

Haaland 😂 just scores a hatrick with just 15 touches on whole game.
He is something different
built different
Again, Haaland can carry the ball like he did in Dortmund but Pep plays him as a pure number 9. He did try involving Erling with the build up play last season. But this season hes expecting Haaland to stay upfront as man marking has increased a lot.
the way pep have been insisting haaland come deep to receive the ball, make him track home on defensive set piece.. not to mention restricting the service haaland have to work with, should tell anyone pep can be a bit of an stubborn idiot

I think Haaland’s had a knock on effect from De Bruyne’s injury, considering how well they clicked last season. With Alvarez currently playing in that role, he’s been taking most shots himself, but I’m sure with time we will see Pep figuring out a way to make the team’s attack more effective - to follow your video about City signing excellent ball carriers recently.

Haaland scored a hat-trick and provided an assist today vs fulham with only 16 touches.
1 goal contribution per 4 touches, insane 😅
it's insane to me that Haaland perfom so well in this City team because target striker just don't fit this style of play. it shows how remarkable he is scoring so much in a play-style he's not suited for.
He doesn't need to touch the ball. He just need to use his Conqueror's Haki.
Haaland is the reason why many teams are playing Low-block/Mid-block against City nowadays
he has transcended our understanding of football
This is obvious to people that watch the games but people that don't just say that he ghosted in the ucl final
Exactly! When Foden made that turn he was pushing defender out of the way for him. It’s those little things that go un noticed he does so much off the ball. Defending set pieces too.
And he's just gone and scored a hat trick.
Anyone who thinks this is a stick to beat him with doesn’t understand his role or football 😂

Haaland adds much more being off the ball, he attracts all the defenders towards himself and makes way too much space
He’s doesn’t control the tempo he’s a out and out cf
Haaland doesnt need to touch the ball. He just looks at it and the ball flies into the net.
If you go check you’ll see he scored most of his goals in the box with no touches just first time finishes
This was just a fancy way of calling haaland a tap in merchant
We need more content highlighting players activity off the ball...
Honestly most of the criticism comes from ignorance really. People just watch the ball when watching the game and matter of fact, a lot of the don't. They go to these stat apps and judge how good someone is from there.
I agree with this so so so much all people care about is the flare the cool skills they don’t realise that if Pep has a way that works better than everyone else’s he’s gonna use it . The reason people bring up random stats and stuff is cuz the annoying af Messi and Ronaldo debate where people feel the need to prove everything with random stats and cool goals
This was kinda obvious but fun hearing it laid out anyway :D
He's similar to Inzaghi in that sense, they don't need much to score, and that dude has 70 goals in European football, only, CR7, Messi, Lewandowski, Benzema and Raul have more, and he rarely did much with the ball at his feet.
Its just hard to find all around class players like Messi that doesnt need a stacked team
If your striker takes a lot off touches it means your team sucks.
Exactly!!!!!
Dude haaland is a bloody tap in merchant
Gone are the days of Thiery Henry where a striker would be deeoly involved in buildup and general play.
I know it’s not as exciting to watch but you have to realise this way of playing of making Halaand less involved in the game until the end and him striking just works with an elite shooter like him the proof is the golden boot
If he touches the ball 3 times and scores 3 times, to me that's the ideal situation 😂
"Haaland doesn't need to touch the ball to win a game" is such a powerful statement. If he was more like Ibrahimovic, he probably would have said this exact sentence himself. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Ibra has said "Ibra doesn't need to touch the ball to win a game" during his career 😂😂😂
I love the way he says "8 million goals!" 😂
Loving that Walthamstow shirt.
Tell that to the journalists who keeping asking about his performance
Admiral still exist 😮
Haaland needs to carry the ball more. Not saying he needs to get much better at dribbling but he needs to be able to be on ball a little bit better and more comfortably. He’s already unstoppable with all his limitations on ball of this man starts dribbling and shooting from outside the box then there is literally no stopping him
absolutely not. he needs to be used for what he is good at.. not forcing him to be mediocre
But sometimes the state of the game requires him to do things he’s not good at like holding up the play. A lot of times, the ball bounces off him, his first touch needs Improvement. It’s not that it’s terrible but it’s not consistent. If he can hold the ball up like drogba used to do, then he will be even more devastating/impactful as a player
@@ladi278that depends on tactics.. Hold up play is for counter attacking team..useless against low blocks aa he's surrounded with defenders
@@hotdog9262so he can’t get better individually??? He’s already as elite as u can possibly get when it comes to positioning, he has great accuracy snd power on his shots, like they only wya he can really improve at this point is become more comfortable on ball. Regardless of tactics and the teams sometimes it just comes down to the individual player and the better and more capable Haaland is the more man city will win when it matters

Why do people fixate so much on touches per game. 🙄
His job is to score goals and win games, he does that when needed. Plus you're talking about a team that won the Premier league without a CF.

That one goal was actually offside
City has 10 man with Haaland at cf a whole dead weight
These are all good reasons why Havertz could succeed as a 9 at Arsenal. His strengths are more off the ball. Only Haaland made more runs off the ball than Kai last season. That creates space for the likes of Odegaard/Rice/Vieira in midfield. And he can dart into space in the penalty box while Saka & Martinelli carry the ball out wide, and have a solid chance at winning aerials with his 6'4" frame.

"Haaland doesn't need to touch the ball to win the game."
Having fewer touches makes him better. City have so many players that are great on the ball and at creating chances - what they need is someone to have those chances created for, and that is Haaland. If he has possession in the build-up, he can't be in the box ready to receive the ball and score, so those touches would be actively hurting the team.
Well when Messi played as a false 9 for pep, he spent a good amount of time in the midfield building up the game or playing the final pass. He also somehow managed to score 73 goals in a season while coming from deep.
Not criticizing Erling. He’s a different type of player to Messi but you can clearly see he has the worst touch and passing ability of any of the city players but he’s a killer in the box.
@@ladi278 The reason for that is simply that Messi is a god amongst men. Barca also had players for him to pass to, while City don't have players for Haaland to pass to, but Haaland obviously isn't good enough on the ball for it to be worth City getting him a strike partner for him to set up.
The key thing is that it's only worth it for your striker to play a major creative role if they're better at it than your midfielders. That was true for Messi, but it's not true for Haaland or indeed almost all other strikers ever to live - Cruyff was another exception, but I'm struggling to find anyone else, even a great playmaker like Henry wasn't a superior creative player to the midfielders he played with at Arsenal and Barca.
In general, comparisons to Messi are meaningless. He was pretty much like Haaland and De Bruyne at the same time, a titanic force that might not be matched for half a century. Haaland isn't as good as that, but no one claims he is.
@@ColinGLogan you are right. I can’t argue with any of your well articulated points. Pep always says messi is on a table by himself. However, Haaland would be even more impactful if his hold up play becomes more consistent. I think that’s the major weakness in his game at the moment. His first touch isn’t consistent when his back is facing the goal.
@@ladi278He's clearly improving that aspect if you watch the last 10 games of the season. Plus PL defenders are notoriously physical, the fact that Haaland can do it at all is a testament to his physicality
if haaland averages 21.7 touches per 90 this season, how does he only have 63 touches this season? He has played way more than 270 mins (3 games).
Honestly who cares about touches? Why do commentators or pundits on match day keep bringing it up? Havertz had tonnes of touches for Chelsea and look how that worked out.
He's a ridiculous machine who needs the slightest sniff of a chance. Of any player in the Prem to have played most of last season, only Brennan Johnson had fewer touches (0.1 fewer lmao) than Håland on average last season and yet look at what he did.
Messi plays how I play on Fifa. The perfect winger.
And is expected to win a ballon dor for that ?
A striker like him should touch 3 balls and score all 3, thats it.
baller just scored a hatty
everytime he touches its a goal
Haaland is absolutely going to have a game in his career where he has one touch, that touch is a sublime biko or something equally ridiculous, to settle a game 1-0.
Its just going to happen.
Haaland is very dependent on de bruyne passes
Did Pep forget to tell him that KDB is injured and that he should expect less goals this season?
Fun things is, Haaland has 6 goals in 4 games in PL, all when KDB is injured. That's the same as his last season record after 4 games but this time without KDB
He is a. Box player
If Man City doesn't have good midfielder, Haaland won't never touch the ball😅
Haaland has had a 1 goal per game ratio even before Man City. He maintained that rate in Salzburg, Dortmund, in Norway National team and now at City. Try again

So to sum it up, haaland is a beast at scoring tapins.
Did u watch the video lol. The system pep is running currently is kind of handicapping Haaland since de bruyne is inured. Go watch him back at dortmund, not trying to say he’s a good dribbler by any means but he can definitely carry the ball and shoot from anywhere on the pitch
@@ballsballsballs3617 he somewhat can if he is played into form. pep in the past have often done the opposite
Je is a goal poacher cyz
Its simple.. the team around him is damn good
And? The team can be good vut still he can,t score well if he is not like Halaand. Alvarez is a good strike too but he couldn't score much like Halaand , thats why Pep still chose Halaand in every match.
Not really
I have no problem with his touches I have a problem with him being compared to much better player example messi, mbappe
Different style of football and different role. Haaland is a pure 9, a classic 9 while Messi plays like a modern striker. Messi is instructed to be involved with every facet of attacks while Haaland is instructed to keep a high line, make runs and finish. One is definitely more aesthetically pleasing but you can't deny Haaland's efficiency and effectiveness
Nobody actually does it lol its mostly Social media You prefer watching the game rather than Enjoying the strategy
