How Mega Millions And Powerball Jackpots Grew So Large

  • While Mega Millions and Powerball jackpots have grown in recent years, America's lottery system goes back a long time. Lotteries in colonial times helped finance some of America's roads, bridges, and schools like Harvard and Yale. Today, state-sponsored lotteries contribute millions state budgets, but some critics question how effective they actually are.
In October, an anonymous woman in South Carolina won the $1.6 billion Mega Millions jackpot. Jackpots have been on the rise since the two major lottery organizations, Mega Millions and Powerball, struck a deal to cross-sell tickets in each others' member states in 2010.

Big business loves regulations. It cuts out the smaller competitors. The EPA was created by Nixon, oil companies were his biggest campaign contributors, Obama signed "financial reform" even though Goldman Sachs was his biggest campaign contributor. Bill Clinton was behind the massive prison privatization of the 90s, and it's not a coincidence his party is also the party of trying to make every little thing a crime. Ban this ban that. And big pharma and insurance made a fortune off Obamacare, all at taxpayer's expense. The irony of all these idiots who think regulation helps the average person is that free markets help the average person, there's a reason most wealthy people are Democrats and hate Trump.

Not true for all states and especially Florida. By law, Florida profits from the lottery after expenses goes to schools, all of it. Zero goes into general funds or other funds. What the school boards do with it after assigning what school gets it, is up to the school districts. This includes universities and colleges. Florida doesn’t have a personal income tax and lottery purchases are not sales taxed.

Why give the lottery any money at all because here in Kentucky, nobody ever wins the jackpot and if any one wins on scratch offs, it's in Louisville or Lexington not in poorer counties. The lottery knows exactly where the big prizes are on the scratch offs are located. If they didn't how could they tell the police how much was stolen from a gas station when it's robbed? They couldn't, but they do just that. They told the police that $1000 worth of winners were stolen in a Louisville robbery. The lottery is a scam!

They used to show the numbers drawn but the current government stopped showing the numbers drawn but they show a video of it being drawn at a later time. So who knows if it is real or rigged. They could just be showing numbers that they gave to someone and told them to pick and then draw them so they win. It just seems funny that only two provinces in the east of the country have won 60 65 and 70 million dollar jackpots until just recently and that is because a lot of the people out west have stopped buying tickets and have been complaining about the lottery corporation and that the east only wins.

There should be dozens of top winning numbers (sets) draw to benefit hundreds of winners with equal "fortune" than just to benefit one winner with one jackpot of hundreds of millions

Earlier in the video you stated that anyone can play, even if they're not a US citizen so long as the ticket is bought in the US. If you look at the graph at 9:05 how much of the winnings would a foreigner take home if they won? Will the US government take a slice of the money? Or would it solely be taxed by the winner's country's discretion?
