Artermis fowl is the villain on his own story. This guy looks like he swaggered right out of spy kids
To be fair, you can only make a kid look so physically intimidating without making him look like something out of the exorcist.
@@dublinjake why swagger then ruin it.
@@dublinjake But Artemis isnt described as physicaly intimidating, thats what butler is for, Artemis is insanely smart
Professor Genki It's strongly implied that he is intimidating in many ways, hopefully there is clever dialogue to make up for the lack of intimidation in his appearance.

This movie sucks
I always imagined Artemis as someone like Lelouch but they made him a Spy Kid

This is the problem with making a book into a movie after the book premier audience has grown up: we have higher expectations than the average 13 year old.
As a 13 year old I disagree, the movie still looks like shit
Congrats, you have above average taste.
Also I feel like it would be much better if it wasn't Disney and instead of movie let it be a series
with the added downside of a graphic novelization, giving us faces to names, that are way more accurate than these ones.
@4T1K5O wtf is wrong with you I'm 14 and I'm not brain dead plz tell me your joking
I hope they don’t make Artemis into a stereotypical young adult fiction hero! He starts off as a villain -> anti-hero -> hero!
I want to see the full character development like in the books!
PLEASE
We won't get enough films to have that happen, as this is almost certainly going to flop.
From what I recall, that kind of IS his progression. Or are you simply meaning you want to see that spread across a series rather than condensed into one film?

@@MazonDel They won't be able to do it justice in just one film, but that's all we'll get because any plans of a sequel will die when this flops

Joshua Park I mean, Disney•Pixar made Wall-e, which attacks the idea of consumerism, which disney thrives on.
I'll assume you never read the books. In the books a war happened between the humans and nonhuman races and the nonhumans escaped by hiding underground. And secondly it says "human greed is what drove us underground" not into the ground

Considering Disney still dominates the box office every year and is thriving off its properties, I’m curious to know what exactly you’re implying. Unless you’re referring to quality, then I guess I can see your point.

This looks like a Spy Kids + Wrinkle in Time crossover.
They got everything wrong. The book was actually kind of violent at times and they obviously aren’t gonna do it justice here.
I'm pretty sure the only thing they're going to keep from the book is the toilet humor involving Mulch Diggums.
Yeah that's definitely something that bugs me about this too. We know Disney can do (slightly) more mature storytelling from the Avengers. This book series came out forever ago. I loved it in middle School and now I'm in college. They're trying to appeal to a new younger audience as opposed to the original fanbase the books already have. I'd love for a PG-13 (Or in a dream world maybe even R, but there isn't really a reason for it) version of the Fowl universe, retold in a more gritty fashion.

Let’s start a petition to remake this
into a animated series that respects it's source material
FYI here was the casting call.
"ARTEMIS FOWL is a boy, aged 9 - 12 years, of no specific ethnicity. Inquisitive and possessing both academic and emotional intelligence, Artemis is highly perceptive and good at reading people. Most importantly, Artemis is warm-hearted and has a great sense of humour; he has fun in whatever situation he is in and loves life."
Artemis Fowl in the books is a cold, manipulative sociopath and a criminal mastermind. His first contact with the Fairies involved holding one of their own for ransom, in exchange for a copious amount of fairy gold so that he could restore his criminal family's fortune. While he does warm up a bit as the book series progresses, he ultimately retains the role of an anti-hero with generally selfish goals and ideals and it takes multiple life crises aided by the Fairies to realize that maybe the value of people extend beyond "How can I exploit this person to achieve my goals?"
This book series was a favorite of mine in middle school. Now you're tarnishing it in favor of making a "family-friendly" version that completely flips around everything the books were about.
EDIT: I fudged it, he wasn't autistic. Haven't read the books in over a decade. My bad folks. Still, this is most assuredly /not/ the dark-ish PG-13 movie I was expecting when I heard that Disney was making Artemis Fowl.
This is yet another reason why I always thought the books would never really work as a movie.
I never saw him as autistic. I thought of him as a child genius who took the time to function as a full adult. His social skills are extremely competent.
@@explosives101 yeah I always thought that only an animated style could do the novels justice.
I think you read autism into a situation where it isn't actually present. Artemis isn't Chris Chan. It's Artemis' initial lack of respect toward people that cause his social conflicts; not because of autism.
You might not realize this, but the movie isn't out yet. Maybe reserve judgement until then.

@@tommysmith9966 I know right, most people are bawling their eyes out over the slightest change to the source material. It's a movie guys, they have to make some changes!
@@snaketooth0943 Changing the police chief to female, so Holly is essentially not a character with a reason in that regard anymore. Artemis using weapons personally, Butler acting shocked, hell Artemis acting surprised is damn near unheard of in the first two books. So these are some major changes to the base storyline Disney did, and damn right they should hear about it, so they atleast have a chance to correct it, given they try to make a sequel.
I've been eager to see an Artemis Fowl movie for years. They were my favourite books as a kid. Now Disney is making the movie.

Skullduggery Pleasant is literally tailor-made to be a movie franchise. The main character is a wisecracking badass with a flaming skull for a head, and the series is filled to the brim with exciting action sequences. I'm not sure there's another YA series more perfectly suited for the screen. That being said, I wouldn't trust Disney going anywhere near this series
This has to be one of the worst movies that I have seen in a long time. It’s full of gaps and weird cuts that really make the movie so confusing. I hate it and I hate myself for making my gf watch it with me, she didn’t deserve that.

they didn't even use correct gnommish. i want to hope for the best, but honestly, they're not giving a whole lot to work with.
I agree with you completely but saying the first part of your comment out loud made me realize how fucking ridiculous it was 😂
Am I the only one who, while decoding all the Gnommish at the bottom of the pages in the book, is now fluent in Gnommish and knows everything I never wanted to know about Stinkworms?
This trailer was uploaded 4 years ago. It gave me hope (even if Butler using a bow is stupid). The trailer that was uploaded 2 years later disappointed me so hard.
Remember reading these as a kid. Didn't know they were still popular!
hope it doesnt got the way of Alex rider.. only one film
They aren't. This movie has been in the production for the last 15 years. These books were my childhood. Loved them. I have read all of them except the last one, since I was "too old" when it came out. This trailer doesn't say much, but what I see here I can see this movie is going to be pointed to those, who weren't alive when the first book came out. Doesn't feel like my kinda movie, now that I am almost 30 years old. If this is going to be another "Harry Potter" tho, they are probably making it like Potter. With every movie, making them darker. I always thought, that Artemis Fowl had a darker feeling, something like fifth Harry Potter movie has.
@@MrHale Yeah, I'm pretty sure it'll be like Harry Potter where the tone of each movie gets darker as Artemis gets older. And you're right, the books (most Colfer books) do have a darker tone than the average young adult fantasy book. It's sad that the movie was in development for so many years however if it came out sooner the cgi would've been poorer and wouldn't have captured the amazing world of Fowl as well as this teaser does
Well, they'll be now.
@@zxnxrui7785 that is true. Tho if it came out earlier, we might have already those dark movies and not this kids movie lol. But I will watch this for entertainment and for curiosity
Disney has an interesting method for creating movie adaptations. It goes like this:
Step 1: Burn the book.
Step 2: Create a generic plot with generic characters.
Step 3: Feed it to the masses.
Step 4: Profit. Cuz it’s Disney.
Seriously Artemis does not even look like he's supposed to. He looks like an innocent boy.
WHICH HE IS EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE OF.
maheruddin ahmed To be fair it is said that he looks innocent if he is trying, it said in The Atlantis Complex that Orion looked nice and welcoming and that it was Artemis' personality that made it look bad,
I agree that the movie looks terrible and it feels like they are going to do what they did to Ready Player One again but, we need to keep an open mind go into the cinema with your expectations low and you might enjoy it.
@@TheMaid__ i will watch it (im too much of an artemis fan not too) but if it turns out like percy jackson (still have nightmares about that disaster of a movie) i will lose all hope that disney will ever make a good book adaptation.
Also Root as a woman? Not a great idea. As it destroys holly's character of being first female recon captain.
When I was a kid I never thought I could grow up to despise Disney this much XD You forgot to mention one: And when they're not busy taking over beloved franchises and ruining them horribly, churn out live-action adaptations of every old animation they have ever made. But imo what's worse is people still going to see them in droves anyway XD
..
This trailer is over a year old now, but I still wanted to put in my two cents. It's tough to base judgement on a less than two minute long teaser trailer but when two of the MAIN CHARACTERS are completely different to the books you're off to a bad start. Root is meant to be a constantly red-faced chain-smoking guy and Butler is specifically described as Eurasian and bald. Also, Butler is portrayed in the books as being ripped and intimidating. This version of Butler looks like merely the idea of running would make him sweat and the only people who would fear him would be small children like the one he's meant to be protecting. I also read that Trouble Kelp will be a woman now! Why? Was there not one male actor who did the role justice during auditions? Same question for Root's character! Judi Dench is a great actress, but Root is still a male character. How hard is it to stay true to the books? One of the things that made the eight Harry Potter movies so successful for a decade was how little the movies strayed from the books. The movies almost brought the books to life! Hopefully the plot hasn't also been messed with otherwise I doubt we'll get a sequel.
I mean the Harry Potter movies strayed from the books occasionally (i.e. Dumbledore said calmly), but it still had the correct characters and plot. If Harry Potter was made about a kid who watched his parents die and now he's seeking revenge by trying to kill Voldemort, that would be an issue. If they cast Hagrid as a woman, it wouldnt change much, but it would feel odd. If something is changed and it doesn't make sense why it was changed, then why change it in the first place? The books for both Artemis Fowl and Harry Potter were good. The movies for Harry Potter were good. This movie looks bad. What's the difference between the two? Harry Potter was mostly consistent, this isn't. Artemis Fowl is a Fantasy Thriller, not a Kids Spy Action Movie with Fantasy elements. People at Disney have made good book adaptations before, so this shouldn't be hard.
ITS GONNA BE ANOTHER PERCY JACKSON D’ARVIT

Was really hoping for Aidan Gallagher to play Artemis. He plays "Number 5" in Umbrella Academy. If you've seen that show, and know the Artemis Fowl books, you'll see how perfect that would have been...
DaraghMurray Oh my God yes he’s the perfect Artemis and Number 5 is so similar with Artemis so that would’ve made so much sense to me,but sadly...This Artemis looks like he’s 8,not 12
@@mariavasilets9360 oh my gosh that's exactly who I was hoping to play Artemis
Yes that would have been a better choice since he can sport a pretty mean face evil genius, but i think Aidan would be a bit too big to play this younger Artie, haha

DaraghMurray he would have been a great actor for it but if by some chance this actually turns out well and they make more he’d be too old by the third.
only good thing this movie did was introduce me to radiohead
Listen, anyone who read the CASTING CALL for Artemis' actor already knew this movie was gonna suck.
There's just no way a movie adaption can live up to it's source material because the people making and producing this crap don't care about the people that grew up with Artemis Fowl. They want the younger audience and the money of the intrepid few of the nostalgia crowd. Just read the books and find some good fanfiction. Don't even bother watching a movie that will just piss you off.
Better yet - read the graphic novels adapted by Colfer himself. At least they're dead on in tone...
no way a movie can live up to the SM?

“Most importantly, Artemis is warm-hearted and has a great sense of humor, he has fun in whatever situation he is in and loves life.”

Wow, one teaser trailer in and it's already apparent that they've thrown the source material out of the window.
1: Butler isn't black, he's Eurasian and for some reason this trailer shows him recoiling in fear?
Dude, Butler is a cold, calculating professional killer who took a troll head on, nothing spooks him and he'd lay down his life in an instant for Artemis.
2: Where the hell is the beefy Sig Sauer that Butler always carries with him? He never used a bow and arrow! (And he should be bald in accordance to his training).
3: Artemis looks...too young and childlike, yeah he's meant to be 12 in the first book but he's described as appearing slightly older and almost "vampire-like", this kid ain't it.
4: Why the hell is Root a woman? (Confirmed via IMDB that Root is indeed being played by Judi Dench) That completely breaks the relationship between him and Holly and takes away all significance of Holly being in LEPrecon.
Guess it's time for another dark, excellent series to get a boring, safe and child friendly movie adaptation that will inevitably flop.
