How long should you wait before considering rehoming?

I would assume a good few weeks. Dependant on the anxiety levels of either dog and the scale of confrontation. We had a 10 year old male terrier and we decided to get him a playmate. The new dog was a female pup of the same breed. The male was always fantastic with other dogs so we were shocked that he didn't take to the new puppy straight away. He distanced himself from the pup and would growl (never bite or attack) on most occasions when she came near. We rarely interviened and allowed him to show his dominance as the older dog. I guess he was teaching her. Withing three weeks the two were joined at the hip and no more growling. She would run him ragged and she gave him so much fun. He seemed a much happier dog as a result. Again there was no physical attacks or biting, only snarls and growls. If the attacked became physical I guess that's a different ball game. Hope it helps.
