- We break out our nice elemental bromine to put three bromide groups on our cyclopentanone ketal as part of the long cubane synthesis. Can we pull it off?? Will the power of test cricket in the radio provide the magic needed? Subreddit: / explosionsandfire

The Australian stereotype of "everything in Australia wants to kill you, especially the spiders" is due mostly in part to home chemists giving the spiders a sound education in the production of high explosives.
That spider was apparently at Osowiec...ran right into bromide with nothing but silk.
Of note, that is wilful misinformation on the part of Australia's board of tourism: there are spiders that want to kill you in many places, and while Australia has like 3 of the top 4 most dangerous spider families (one being an import from africa) the US is home to 6 or 7 of the top 10.
The spider thing is just to detract you from the fact that everything else is trying to kill you: the cute mammals, the birds, the plants, the water (Australia lost a prime minister to the sea), the stuff that lives in the water, and the land itself.
you know youve got a good chemistry channel when the viewership is just other chemists going 'yeah mate, same'
all my homies love aromatic halogenation
I'm not a chemist at all, I just like the blood smoke bromine, lol
its just chemistry made into memes in a correct way not just some high school style puns
As a fellow Aussie chemist I relate to so much of what happens and what is said on this channel, it’s pure gold
@@kmit9191 rather than the cringe chemistry memery, this is based chemistry shitposting
"I dry my sieves by microwaving them, is that trash?"
"Ehh it might not be that bad, i mea-"
"oops one caught on fire"
"ok lmao yea it's bad"
tbf, I use a microwave in my lab to dry sieves out. Not had one on fire yet....

God bless the 60s
Is he not _also_ working in "defense"?
Orange chemistry is just yellow chemistry with just a touch of the secret ingredient : denial
I'm a physicist, but from what I can gather of chemistry that seems to be a rather large portion of the entire field
Lets gooo, another video of rolling the chemistry dice to make dice shaped chemistry.
oooh yeah I like that
@@ExtractionsAndIre Woah you responded! Love your channel dude, home chemistry is the best because you'll never know how its gonna go, and risk is fun ofc
Thanks for all your work!

"Do not build a web around my f'n Bromine" lol that's the sound of authentic Australian chemistry right there
0:22 Ooh those high production values.
Yeah goddamn mind blowing special effects there
That was kinda neat, lol
Our m8 Tom blessing us with some of those next generation editing skills.
Congratulations on the yield! 50% when the authors report 60% is something I can barely pull off in a proper lab.
Indeed, have a drink tn mate!
I was pleasantly surprised as well. So satisfying to see it when he added it to the filter.
If there's one group of people who lie more than fishermen about the size of fish they catch, its people who write chemistry papers. Maybe that's why my reagent grade potassium fluoride is 102 percent pure.

haha true, but the mercury ones are okay for me! the red alcohol ones are dreadful though

Haha mate, there are quite a few of your viewers in research labs around the country if my uni is any indicator.

We don't have to test the crickets where I live... they work just fine.
how would you know if you never tested them???

i keep commenting this on every video but it brings me indescribable joy to watch chemistry happen and hear afx music fade in
I'm glad to hear it!
Don't build a web on my bromine!
Poor bugger nearly got cancer.
Let's goooo new Ex&I video! Most entertaining chemistry channel. I was using some DCM in the lab the other day, and was instantly reminded of the MLP jar... Thanks a lot
You're welcome, that's actually where all DCM is sustainably farmed from
Doing a search for "MLP jar extractions and ire" on CZcams brought up some very .. questionable .... results. What scares me is I actually think this is what you might be referring to.
@@barbedwire83 whelp, that's enough internet for today.
@@ExtractionsAndIre I’m glad I’m not the only weirdo distilling DCM from that Bunnings source haha
for me by far the most magical and technically impressive part is when you screw something up and improvise to salvage something. even when it doesn't work, it's still impressive and i almost believe that you know what you're doing.
the scene that went from normal speed to slow-mo with the bromine dropping in was so cool
That's a nice amount of bromine you added to the mix lol

" 2020 Looks like things are starting to improve, things are on the up"
This comment did not age well for Australia
Australia: on the decline since forever. Nanny state forever
Other labs: "there's too much oxygen in the environment and our yield is too low"
ExIre: "I got some spider in my yield, ell' be alright"
Actually I was going to comment on using such a soft hose for vacuum work, but yeah... I guess you shouldn't put a flat bottom flask under vacuum with contents that are hot enough to melt glass either.
Yeah I'm surprised the terrible soft hose and tiny 12 V pump could make a vacuum strong enough to do that, but I guess it can
Or put contents hot enough to deform glass in glass for a start
Vacuum the whole room except for the flask and put in some hot sieves. Problem solved.
The *Virgin* Erlemeyer Flask vs The *Chad* Round Bottom Flask
the extractions and ire trademarked chroma keying on random chemicals is really a great effect

Me: "heh, nice"
I think there are a lot of Chem labs out there with people wanting to get their hands on the Extractions&Ire 2020 Calendar, featuring Tom in a lab coat in tasteful poses with different glassware.
I'm not sure which month would be the Graham Condenser though...
Some sieves can be dried in the microwave, some cannot. The mds/data sheet should day
you're like a real yellow chemistry artist, that product in the filter looked just like nan's scrambled eggs
Got so pumped my fav chem tutor uploaded.
As a chemistry major i really love your channel. Im taking my first semester of organic chemistry next semester and im really excited to learn how chemistry works in real life (as opposed to general chemistry)
hey good luck mate!
@@ExtractionsAndIre thanks! 😁
You should learn how to pipette by mouth. Its really a lost art
It is very 60s isn't it, hmmm
The old timers at the lab do it all the time, my technician ass won't even try.

cricket on the radio: the sound of the summer. iconic
Always excited for a new E&I, or E&F video, and never disappointed!
Cricket on the radio inspired me to look up some cricket highlights, and I watched 8 minutes of play from the Australia vs India Boxing Day match. I have no idea what happened, or even who won, but it looked like everyone was having a good time.
Haha nice. The game runs over 5 days and day 2 is happening right now, so no-one has won yet!
Yes! Great job, the dark gods deliver once again! Have a happy new year and looking forward to your new videos!
This is impressive work ! You're pretty talented, not gonna lie ! One can clearly appreciate your evolution as a chemist, really !
Thanks for all the good stuff !
Amazing! Seems like some incredibly sensitive chemistry and it all went well! Now if only I could get results like that in my research lab
CZcams Just asked me to rate this.
I've ticked Enjoyable, useful, heartwarming, inspiring, life changing, informative and "other".
The only word I spelt correctly was "other"
You paint a beautiful word picture.
Yessss! Needed a video from the crazy man himself!
I love your videos, they are so educative and smart but with a lot of humor
Wow, just the intro made my day so bright, lol. Thank you! And good job with all the chemically stuff m8!
The graduated cylinder that I just noticed, I hope has had the best possible future. I feel you cylinder, you were there doing what was asked of you.
I love the humor in your videos, especially when fuck something up and are all chill about it. "HBr Gas...not the healthiest. apparently not the best system..."
25 seconds in, and the cinematography is on point with that transition wipe.
Now to watch the rest.

Oh hey, actually a nice yield and a very promising product! Who did you pray to again, Cthulhu?
"Because sometimes, I like to do chemistry, because I want to"
You should start selling shirts because that is an awesome statement lol.
You said you can't get the reaction above 30 and I saw all the ice melt and I was like oh no it's going to be fucked but then I realized your using metric and not freedom units. All is well.
Yeah 30 in normal units is much easier to control than 30 in freedom units for sure!
These thumbnails are fire
I love the little circular spotlights that move around during your timelapses
I love watching this series. Chemistry on CZcams is always for everyone - like explosions or simple to understand. But you are doing some professional stuff. I am happy to see this community grow. Best greetings from a chemistry student who likes yellow chemistry

The fact that this man has not poisoned himself yet is a fricking miracle. Other chemists might use a fumehood when dealing with bromine, where this man is just inhaling it like a vape.

To a solution of the ketal (128g, 1.0mol) in dioxane (1L) at 5°C and protected from light and moisture, was added bromine (480g, 3.0mol) over 5 hours, such that the temperature did not exceed 15°C. Once the addition was complete a gentle stream of nitrogen was passed through the solution for 3 days at room temperature. The resultant mixture was poured into a vigorously stirred solution of 5% sodium bicarbonate (6.0L) and stirring was continued for 1 hour. The precipitated solids were collected, washed with water, and recrystallised from ethanol to give the tribromide (256g, 70%) mp 72-75°C
Ah yeah recrystallisation from ethanol, probably could have done that!
@@ExtractionsAndIre I made cubane diester back in the '80s. This was undoubtably the hardest step ... If you can get to cubane in a shed with hardware supplies I will be genuinely impressed. Good luck with that double Favorskii ring contraction ... the yield will be low!
