  • We break out our nice elemental bromine to put three bromide groups on our cyclopentanone ketal as part of the long cubane synthesis. Can we pull it off?? Will the power of test cricket in the radio provide the magic needed? Subreddit: / explosionsandfire

    The Australian stereotype of "everything in Australia wants to kill you, especially the spiders" is due mostly in part to home chemists giving the spiders a sound education in the production of high explosives.

    • @starbomber

      That spider was apparently at Osowiec...ran right into bromide with nothing but silk.

    • @Bob-nc5hz
      @Bob-nc5hz Před rokem +3

      Of note, that is wilful misinformation on the part of Australia's board of tourism: there are spiders that want to kill you in many places, and while Australia has like 3 of the top 4 most dangerous spider families (one being an import from africa) the US is home to 6 or 7 of the top 10.
      The spider thing is just to detract you from the fact that everything else is trying to kill you: the cute mammals, the birds, the plants, the water (Australia lost a prime minister to the sea), the stuff that lives in the water, and the land itself.

    To a solution of the ketal (128g, 1.0mol) in dioxane (1L) at 5°C and protected from light and moisture, was added bromine (480g, 3.0mol) over 5 hours, such that the temperature did not exceed 15°C. Once the addition was complete a gentle stream of nitrogen was passed through the solution for 3 days at room temperature. The resultant mixture was poured into a vigorously stirred solution of 5% sodium bicarbonate (6.0L) and stirring was continued for 1 hour. The precipitated solids were collected, washed with water, and recrystallised from ethanol to give the tribromide (256g, 70%) mp 72-75°C
