  • What is Kanekalon Hair Made Of? | Is Kanekalon Fiber Hair Toxic?
    Recently a video surfaced saying that Kanekalon hair is made out of toxic synthetic fibers and that Kanekalon hair should be illegal.
    I wanted to learn how kanekalon hair is made and what is kanekalon hair made of?
    There are four fibers that can make up Kanekalon hair- Modacrylic fiber, PVC fiber, flame retardant fiber, organic protein fiber. Today we will focus on the Modacrylic fiber and PVC Fiber. Modacrylic fibers are mainly used for braids ( Marley Braids, Twists) while PVC fibers are used for wigs, weavings (crochet braids and weaves) and hair pieces. These two fibers are made out of acrylonitrile and vinyl chloride. Let's learn if these ingredients are toxic.

    This really opened my eyes but to an even bigger picture than just our hair. We absorb micro plastic particles (mpp) daily through eating, drinking, and the air we breathe. I was reading an article, and the amount of mpp an adult absorbs daily is equivalent to eating one credit card per week. Plastic is used for so many things, eliminating it entirely is nearly impossible. So even if you stop wearing Kanekalon or any other synthetic hair, your body will still absorb mpp in other areas of daily living. So the best way to counter, is doing detoxes so your body can eliminate toxins/impurities naturally through sweat, using the bathroom, foot soaks, ect. Also switching to glass storage, water containers, reusable grocer bags, ect can also reduce mpp intake. Great discussion!

      I learned that melatonin not only controls our sleep patterns, but also our bodies abilitity to remove free radicals, during the nightly cycle of the body cleaning and healing itself during sleep...so don't forget your daily dose of melatonin. Our pineal gland does produce melatonin, so I wonder how much we would need to take, if we need to @ all... That's a whole new question..🤔

    if you’re going to use this hair please soak and wash the hair before you install it. use warm water and acv vinegar (or white vinegar) and soak it in the tub for 15 minutes, press down on the hair then rinse the hair & drain the water. then soak the hair in shampoo for 15 minutes rinse & drain. do the same thing with conditioner & let it air dry.

  • @augustjsb
    @augustjsb Před 3 lety +59

    So I did a bit more research on these two chemicals. Yes, it is absolutely true that in the right circumstances these chemicals are toxic, but short of working inside the manufacturing plant. You'll never be exposed.
    First, Acrylonitrile is only so toxic if it is inhaled or if you come into contact with it as a liquid. Acrylonitrile would have to be a concentration of 16 parts per million (PPM) over several hours for you to begin to have a reaction. This means if you you have a million air molecules. You would need 16 of them to be made up of this chemical to affect you. In an average medium sized room that is completely empty and airtight with no ventilation you have around 6 octillion (6,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000) air molecules.
    Vinyl Chloride is absolutely used in the making of Kanekalone hair, but not like how you would think. It is a gas used to create Polyvinyl chloride (PVC). A type of strong durable plastic (sneeze guards, pipes, plastic cutlery etc) that is only dangerous in it's gas state and you would once again need high concentrations in a sealed room. The reason the factory workers were so sick from the chemicals is because of the constant exposure and unsafe working conditions.
    Drinking or breathing in molecules from clorox bleach is WAY WAY WAY more dangerous that wearing Kanekalon hair

      It irritates me when I see videos like this. Not because she's spreading misinformation or even intentionally misleading people. It's just the conclusions she reached are objectively true, but subjectivity inaccurate.
      This is a problem I see 1,000 times a day. When people hear the word "chemical" they immediately feel like it is something unsafe (and at risk of sounding like a rogue conspiracy theorist) because this is what we've been conditioned to believe.
      "Chemicals" are the building blocks of the universe. These long names are meant to convey exactly what a substance is made of. Take Dihydrogen Monoxide (H20) for example.
      Without this chemical, you will die within days. The only treatment that can keep all of your organs (brain included) from shutting down is continued exposure. Dihydrogen Monoxide is simply the name for the chemical make-up of water.
      H=hydrogen and O=oxygen. Both of which are EXTREMELY EXTREMELY flammable. Oxygen is quite literally the fuel of fire. No oxygen, no fire. It's why when if you cover a candle it goes out so quickly. The fire used all the oxygen available to it.
      The Hindenburg, a giant blimp filled with hydrogen exploded as it tried to land before a storm. It wasn't struck by lightning. It exploded because of a small leak and random electricity in the air. Disintegrating and killing 96 people in under a minute. However, you take two hydrogen molecules and one oxygen molecule and bond them together. You get water. Which unless you're spongebob or Adele. You're going to have a hard time setting water on fire.
      Chemicals aren't good or bad. They just exist. It is about the bonds that they form, or don't form, that makes all the difference. I'll not sure how these chemicals are bonded together, but from a buisness stand point. Its really hard to make money if your products keep poisoning the people who are buying them.

    • @rialance8887
      @rialance8887 Před 3 lety +12

      This is a good point, as well. But the problem is that there is not enough research or studies done on the long term effects of putting this type of product in your hair. This evidence is definitely not to be turned away, especially since we are seeing a rise to breast cancer, reproductive issues, birth defects and etc. within the balck population.

    • @augustjsb
      @augustjsb Před 3 lety +15

      @@rialance8887 Most synthetic hair is made of these materials. Not just braiding hair. "Braiding hair" is more of a sub category that refers to the way it is altered. Basically, it's run through a machine that adds texture to the hair so it will hold braids better. If there was a rise is breast cancer and birth defects across everyone who wears it. You could then link it, otherwise it's a coincidence. Correlation doesn't imply causation. Even if researchers ignored POC in studies. If they found a link for white people. It would be talked about.
      You also have to remember that these chemicals are used to make other plastics used in society. Not just synthetic hair extensions. So more than just black people would be regularly exposed.

    Acrylonitrile is a liquid that can be absorb into your skin and/or release gasses into your lungs that is toxic to your bloodstream. It isn’t in liquid form anymore when it’s made into plastic. Plastic is a solid and skin can’t soak up solids nor can your lungs just inhale plastic. The plastic would have to be broken down into tiny particles ( like dust for an example) to even be able to inhale. And set on fire to release flumes to infect the lungs. Acrylonitrile is used in ABS plastics which are known to be safe to use. So, are we twisting facts by referring to acrylonitrile in its liquid state, which is in fact a dangerous chemical but doesn’t acknowledge that when used to make synthetic plastic, it is safe in solid form?

      Charles Mitchell have you played with legos as a kid? Legos are made out of ABS plastic. Most of us has played with legos for hours upon hours as a kid. Do you think your body is deteriorating from playing with those legos? Your body heat isn’t hot enough to melt ABS plastic. Your sweat isn’t going to dissolve plastic 😩 plastic deteriorates so freaking slow, that is why people want to get rid of plastic all together.

And short hair is something many black women wear and rock them too. Since recently we are truly getting to understand our hair, how to properly take care of it and make it grow, something I do think anyone would be excited about knowing how our hair has basically been taboo for so long. Our hair is the most fragile and constantly being in them to comb the hair frequently would not be the best for it, many of us also have thick hair and it's hard to manage on a regular basis. There's nothing wrong with extensions and wanting to wear extensions.

Knowing that, finger comb, wear it curly or nappy-whatever you want to call it, and learn to care for and appreciate your natural God-given beauty. You are beautiful.

And this synthetic hair has been round for decades, also it has a fire retardant and you are burning it well duh that’s not going to have a positive outcome. I would have to do actual research on amounts and what amounts makes it toxic as that is the bases of anything ... it has to do with how much exposure creates the toxicity. That’s not something you really addressed and what you showed wasn’t based on that basic chemistry premise. So I have more questions vs answers.

    After getting braids put into my hair, I always feel like worms are crawling in my scalp. I normally wash the braids with apple cider vinegar and baking soda to stop this feeling. However, I’ve stopped getting braids with synthetic hair.

    Kanekalon hair has been used for years, particularly on dolls and is still used on them. If it were that dangerous, I'm sure alot more people would have been affected negatively. Especially the 90's kids as most barbie dolls from that era have kanekalon hair. I've played with and collected dolls all my life that are rooted with kanekalon and have never fallen ill or experienced anything negative as a result of being around that hair type :/

    • @RoseMajorsEnt
      @RoseMajorsEnt Před 4 lety +17

      A lot of us were affected negatively and attributed the itching to braids being too tight or the scalp just not being used to having the hair braided, tight or not. As a melinated wombman I can attest to how many times I have been taught to grin and bear pain only to have to remedy a situation when it's become way worse rather than listening to my body's warnings immediately. Maybe you or the people around you are not sensitive to these chemicals and playing with a doll with these type of chemicals on/as the dolls hair is a whole lot different from these chemicals resting on your scalp which is part of the biggest organ on ones body, the skin. just my thoughts considering I have experienced extreme itching with this type of braiding hair.

      Playing with a doll every now and then versus wearing braids or whatever is two COMPLETELY different levels of exposure. When a woman has braids that hair is constantly touching her face and is on her 24/7 for at least 2 months. You’re comparing apples to grapes

      Take into account that the kanekalon is in direct contact with you constantly and with heat, water, etc. when worn. This is so different from playing with dolls that have it.

      i wear yarn braids from time to time they are very light not heavy til u wet them like wash them but if u wet the ends they r not heavy they r actually better for natural hair than syntetic hair as for how long they last it depends on your hair growth from my guess 2 mos.. but the older they get the better they look.

    I used kanekalon hair for braids. After the install my scalp was itching non stop. I removed it the next day. My scalp was red, swollen and sore. Within the next 2 days all of my hair came out. I am so depressed and hurt by this. Something should be done to stop it from being sold. Now I am bald and trying to grow my hair back.
