In the late 90s and 2000s gaming in brazil exploded because gaming became affordable AKA we could pirate the shit out of new games. Before that, either you played 10yo games on your nes, snes and mega drive (the better genesis name) for lots of money or you played new games for the cost of a virgin cd after the entry cost of a jailbroke console or pc.

Buying videogames in my country is a nightmare, piracy is pretty much normalized here and I do participate in it, although I try to buy the indie games I want to play, I pirate most AAA games nowadays

I got the same feeling from Bioshock Infinite's gameplay trailer vs release. The vibe feels completely different, and I can't really explain why. The full game doesn't seem as eerie as the trailer presented.

I remember before HL2 came out thinking that it was going to be open world with no loading screens and that you'd just go from area to area with procedurally generated chase and escape and barricade sequences to get away from aliens and combine, blocking doorways with washing machines and running from gunfire blasting in through boarded up windows.
I can't even blame Valve for disappointing me there because that was mainly my fault. I still love the game anyway of course, I've played it over about 10 times, replayed it with mods, all that kind of stuff.

Axel hacked into Valve's network by breaching a website that was run on Valve's network for Gabe's brother. I think the website was called Tengis or some shit. It was vulnerable to an ASP attack where Axel was able to upload arbitrary files to the server that would then run the ASP files. Once in the server, he broke into the domain controller and got all the usernames and passwords for the network. at the time, Kerbors passwords were hashed with MD5, and MD5 has some well collisions and is easily brute forceable. Adobe and a few other companies have been caught using them, and their unsalted password list was leaked on the darknet shortly after their website got hacked. Anyway, after he got the admin username and password, he pulled all the files from the build server and e-mail server. The rest is history. I know all this because I used to be in a lot of hacking IRC channels at the time and Axel was in one of them and bragged about what he did. I belonged to a ton of hacking and cracking groups until I turned 18 and grew the fuck up and started acting like an adult. I'm really surprised I never got caught for half the shit I did, but I knew when to get out, and I never bragged about the shit I did to anyone. Rule #1 about security. Trust nobody.

Pyro to make a long story short he used a exploit to pretend he was a Valve employee to the software they were using to manage the internal office network and file sharing among company PCs (think a 2003 Microsoft Teams / Google Drive thing) and then he right clicked and downloaded all of it.
Yeah, outside of spoofing an employee, it sounded more like they screwed up and had all their files on a single file share server that wasn't super secure. They clearly just never expected a phish like that. That said, it's pretty funny Gabe was gonna destroy the poor naive hacker by "taking him up" on that employment offer and living in Germany (and getting caught by them) saved his ass big time. Edit that I gotta say: holy shit this is System Shock except reality ensued. Also he didn't get brought on to break an AI's morality cores.
I think it's perfectly legitimate to pirate three things, content that you can not purchase (be it region locked, taken off store shelves, etc), Day 1 DLC (that shit should have been in the game) and games with Denuvo in them.
