- BMW 325D DIY Engine Breather Change 330D E90 / E91 / Removal & Refit/blue smoke from cold start.
These commonly get blocked and put undue load on the turbo, shortening its life, and causes oil to enter the intake system causing a same amount of blue smoke from the exhaust on cold starts.
They should be changed every third or fourth service
Quite amazing mate very therapeutic watching a pro at work..having to change a crank breather pipe on my e90 and watching your methodical approach has gave me confidence in doing it..good show👍👍👍💪🏻...
Brilliant guide for us E90 lot. I just finished doing my 2006 320d. It was a massive ball ache, but got there in the end. Thanks.
Great video! It solved the blue smoke problem on my 05 320D E90.
Nice video man, Worked a treat on my 05 320D e90, No blue smoke and a much smoother idle since changing, Also fitted swirl flap blanks at the same time. These breathers can be picked up on ebay for about £20 if anyone is wondering where to get them as EuroCarParts and Halfords don't seem to stock them.
Thx! I think that video refers to the filter. The rest can be found in other videos. Well explained thank you
hello there,it seems to be many things to unbolt /remove, still, thanks for your time and patient you deserve a pint of something.cheers
Nice video. You taking your time even to explain the small detail. 👍
THANK YOU JOHN, THIS HAS HELPED ME. KIND REGARDS JAL
You, sir, are a lad. Thanks for this great vid
This is a fantastic and well explained video! I've seen lots of DIY guides on forums which follow similar steps to show you how to change the air filter, but inadvertently a couple of steps are missed out by accident. First time i've seen someone patiently walk through all of this and explain so clearly what they're doing. Great job and really useful!
+Mubashar Sapru
thank you for the comments
John Wasilewski does the N47 engine have a breather?
Mubashar Sapru
The breather on the N47 is built into the rocker cover so isn't 'serviceable' as such
John Wasilewski do you know of any ways to diagnose that it is the breather is failing (other than blueish smoke) to change it?
Sorry cannot help with that, all I can suggest is you take it out, open it and have a look inside
Dziękuję za film/ Thank You for video
Thanks for the video I’m doing mine next weekend
Good camera work! I've been trying to find some good shots of the cowling area, and most of what I've seen is dark and blurry. Thanks
Very well explained video, cheers for this!
Hello do you have any video to show how to Pull out One of this injectores of that engine? Thanks
Merci, cette vidéo m'as tellement servi 👌👍👍👍
The strut brace bolt torque specifications are as follows. E18 central firewall bolt should be 100Nm (74 ft-lb) plus an additional 100 degrees. The E14 Strut tower bolt torque spec is 40Nm (30 ft-lb) plus an additional 60 degrees. I deliberately torque mine a little less as I had to helicoil all three of mine due to previous owner stripping them and no way I'm doing it again. I have no issues going slightly less, so I wouldn't worry about the additional degree turn BMW say you should do.
This is a servicepoint at about 120 000km, but some workshops cheat and don't change it. (Due to the time-consuming demount/mount-job)
If not changed and starting to clog it builds pressure in the crankcase, obstructing the oilreturn from the turbo, bearings suffer and turbo gives up.
If you are lucky it stops there. Just a lot of smoke...
Change turbo (and filter) and drive on.
But the oil in the turbo can take the way through to the intake side/compressor side, and then causing a total engine blow by overrevving the engine without control by running on it's own oil.
If the oil blows out in the exhaust side/turbine side one have a hell of a job emptying the exhaust system of oil...
So doing this job changing the breathing filter is pretty important. ;)
You already had the vortex breather on the car which when fitted doesnt require replacing. The only type that needs changing is the loo roll style. Blue smoke will glow plug and/or module.
The vortex type still go bad mate. They clog up or the seals go.
@@99ron30 that comes down to poor vehicle maintenance not the vortex breaking on its own
@@vivarovanlife So would simply doing more frequent oil changes prevent them from clogging?.
@@99ron30 100%. Bad/old oil will have accumulated a lot carbon which breaks down seals and clogs all sorts. Best way to prevent this on the old M47/57 engines is to frequently change oil and filter every 5,000 miles with good quality/OEM equivalent products
@@vivarovanlife Thanks for replying. I bought mine earlier this year with 142000 miles, had the oil changed when I got it but now I am on 148700 so I am gonna do an oil change tomorow with LL04 5w30 and a Mahle oil filter. I did a test run just now and no more clouds of smoke when I accelerate hard, so my vortex breather change went well.
Would of liked to see it not smoking when u finished
This breather is without filter ????
My m47 started smoking like that after the breather change
Any clues?
I can not see the result, i don't think this is the problem of bleu smoke
Hi john,
would a blocked breather cause a lumpy idle for 10 secs on startup also?
Thank you in advance
B Wood that’ll be glow plugs, glow plug relay module, or injectors.
hi,
it looks like some thing is missing in the breather housing. In my e39 and e46 330d there is a filter element inside.
thelincoln72 - The E90s don't need the loo roll or vortex filter. It's built into the valve cover itself.
MrSweetE90 - My E90 had the loo roll filter which I had changed out for the vortex breather. Did the same to my E60.
M57 after 2007 doesnt have filter/vortex. You can check in RealOEM.
@@mrsweete9065 How do I clean the breather in the valve cover as my E90 330d did not have either a loo roll type nor a vortex filter in it when I changed mine?
@@misterphiluk I'm not too sure how you would do that as they're not designed to be cleaned, and I don't think it's common for them to clog either. I suppose there's nothing to stop you removing the valve cover and then rinsing it through. But I'd definitely figure out if it's even clogged, I don't believe I've heard of that issue before.
Our M57n2 engines don't have any filter in the crankcase breather that sits on top of the valve cover, while it's not completely understood why they deliberately left this out, it should be used. I'll try and dig out a puma about this. You can till buy the Vortex filter for the CCV by using a part number from another car like an X5 30d

I don't suppose you took a video of the exhaust before and after?
Hi sorry didn't take a picture afterwards, the video was intended to show how to replace the breather
so, hmmmm
did changing the breather valve make any difference to your car.. as you've stated that changing the valve is whats needed but neglected to show there results hmmmm we shall never know.....
The description is somewhat inaccurate. Neither the old part you removed nor the new part you fitted had the filter element installed in the breather so there is no chance that it could have been blocked. However the vacuum diaphragm that is inside the round bit can split and cause oil to be sucked into the manifold and cause blue smoke like it does on the petrols. However that has nothing to do with anything being blocked. Assuming this fixed the blue smoke issue it would have been the diaphragm valve at fault.
This type doesnt have a filter. I spent ages trying to figure out why I couldnt find one with a filter until I was told it didnt have one
@@emil1460 Incorrect. You are thinking of the revised type which has a cyclone type "filter" (looks like a pair of small funnels underneath) which replaced this type which DID/was supposed to have a cotton filter cartridge fitted to it, but they were notorious for clogging up quickly and causing issue so it was redesigned for later M57/47 varients.
@@soundseeker63 Ive literally just done this job on the exact same engine
Would this also affect acceleration at all?
+Nerijus Reketis Hi, I cannot see that this would noticeably affect acceleration, unless it has caused a large amount of engine oil to have accumulated in the inter cooler, regards
John
i dont see the filter thing in your breather
otherwise good video
Did this cure the blue smoke on cold startup?
Hi, Yes it cured my blue smoke on cold start up.
John Wasilewski Great stuff.. thanks for the reply 😉
might be a stupid qs but do all bmw have engine breather?
+Slengo Slengaw - EVERY Engine needs a " Breather " ... Even Lawn Mower and Small Weed Wacker !!!
Jordan Bronson Not quite. Weed whackers are 2 stroke. Only 4 strokes have crankcase breathers.
Yes its good but....you should have changed the air filter..and you should have showed the result by starting the engine again to show no smoke.ta
9.20 dude where is the breather filtering unit ? :D You are only installing the housing!
Hi, these come as a sealed unit, this video shows how to change the unit.
Kind regards
@@johnwasilewski964 you are missing vortex oil separator from breather. In models pre 2002 there was a filter after 2002 (from what I remember) there was separator.
OMG, how much work just to replace the bloody air filter?!
Thanks for the comment, I agree it's ridiculous
ive got to do this to my 330d e90 as well as changing the air filter while im at it , everything always seems to be a mission to fix anything on bmw,s , miss working on my old volvo , nothing was complicated unlike the bmw , but what can you do ea
ok but you missing install breather filter ?
I cant believe what I'm looking at as well. Also it surprises me how this video got so many thumbs up as well.
Tyson fury ? Lol
Hi, sorry no
😨 All that works just to get to the breather!!!! This is so bad maintainability design.
I think I will live with my small bit of smoke only on start up wwwaaayyy to much work, bmws are shite to work on
Neil Devlin l did this on my 325d and made no difference. Like yours, mine smokes for about a minute, maybe less on cold startup then nothing.
Shite to work on? Ever worked on an Octavia tdi? Those are Shite to work on xD
@@zman1998b yes but I'm talking about the 530, 3.0
Horrible this plastic crap fromm BMW.
