Always a special moment when they present the jackets in the Triple Crown tournaments. Most of the available superlatives have already been exhausted when discussing the career achievements of the late, great Earl Anthony. Forty-one regular tour wins, two Firestones, first to earn $1 million, multiyear high-average leader and six-time Player of the Year honors. However, I have always believed that the true benchmark of Anthony's greatness were his six, count 'em, six PBA National Championships. In the old days, before the revamped qualifying and TV formats, the PBA National was a 56-game marathon (24 games qualifying, 32 games match play). Anthony won the majority of his titles on the old long-oil lacquer finishes, before the advent of high-performance equipment (nowadays, if you spend enough money, you can buy your way to a 220 average; just because technology has opened the pocket by about 20 boards doesn't mean a thing -- put these kids out on a lacquer finish with a Brunswick Black Beauty or an AMF All-Star that won't move but half a board and see if they can make the shot). Anthony was driven to be the best; he won with speed control, hand position and deadly accuracy. They didn't call him the Doomsday Stroking Machine for nothing; the man had ice water in his veins under pressure. He was one of a kind.
Thank you so much for posting this! This victory of Earl's has been absent on CZcams for awhile, and it's his last official victory (at the time before the PBA started counting the Masters) on tour before his retirement. The quality is amazing! Thank you, again!!!
I agree with you 1,000% because this is when bowling was bowling. Like the NFL, the Professional Bowlers Tour is now CRAP too & isn't worth watching anymore either.
Watch Roy Buckley's shot the pin stays up, it's not the 6 pin it's the 3 pin that goes over between the 6 and 10 slot. I have never seen a 3 stay up on a strike shot for a right hander. WoW !!!
Because he accomplished all that in 14 short years, he's greater than that so-called winningest bowler of all time, Walter Ray Williams, Jr. It took Walter longer to accumulate his titles and didn't have a stellar season until his 13th season....therefore, Earl Anthony is the greatest ever to bowl the lanes bar none!
@@joeambrose3260 He was an alcoholic, something he acquired while touring. He was hungover the morning he died, tripped on Eddie's cat and fell down the stairs. Hardly a dignified death for such a great bowler. Calm yourself, maybe have a drink.
Yeah, no doubt in my mind that Earl was the best ever. And he got off to such a late start, age wise, compared to Walter Ray. And wow, so many 2nd place finishes that could have been. And the man had a hot wife to.
A lot of good bowlers from my area of Cincinnati! Saw Kevin bowl many times! Also,Steve Fehr drills all my bowling balls out of his pro shop in the Western Hills Bowl.
Oh yeah definitely been to the Fair Calhoun Pro Shop many time used to love bowling the Monday night shootouts in the summertime down there I love the super classic that was my favorite Tournament of the year to bowl all the money that was down there that week was insane
When I was a kid I always wanted him to win. Now I'm going try lefty cause my right side is getting torn up and I watch Earl to guide my conversion . Truly he was the greatest a man of precision consistency and strength. This match was who he was to not let his early frame struggles defeat him. He made the adjustments to win
6 PBA National Championship titles. Nuff said. The look on Durbin’s face says it all after Earl struck on the first ball in the tenth. Though it was a good break on a weak hit, I think Durbin could appreciate that Earl at least hit the pocket. It was a challenging lane condition with lots of deflection on half-pocket hits.
Earl the pearl! I cc'dwas a kid back then he was on all the time. That's what Saturday bowling on TV was a staple for half the country... think about it 38000 to win that which is about equal to $100,000, now guys get peanuts

I watched the Pba every Saturday on ABC .. Chris and Beau...where the best Duo.. ever... looked forward to every Saturday...
Love it! They were the best pair of commentators. Great dynamic between the two of them, and always relevant commentary.
Same Here. Love these telecasts.

This match is a true testament to Earl's excellent mental game.
No often you can use the word _superlative._
I'll bet when you begin to talk eyes glaze over.
Man that opening then Chris and Bo calling the action made these bowling shows have SO MUCH more excitement.
Great Job Mike Durbin. You are still one of the best out there.
Glad to see this again Earl was the greatest

What I will like to see is a video of his 1973-1976 seasons...I am not seeing anything posted on CZcams of the games during those years
+Jay Hicks There are a few shows from then, but none of his titles. I'd kill to see Shows when he had his greatest success: 1974-76!
