- Peter performing his orchestral version of the David Bowie / Brian Eno classic ‘Heroes’, live in Verona.
Directed by Anna Gabriel.
The track features in the US supernatural horror television series 'Stranger Things' and is available on Peter's eighth studio album 'Scratch My Back'.
Originally conceived as a reciprocal arrangement that would be released as one album it was Peter’s half that arrived first, in 2010, featuring his orchestral interpretations of some of his favourite songs. It was titled Scratch My Back.
The second part, featuring artists covering Peter’s songs was aptly named 'And I’ll Scratch Yours' and followed in 2013.

Somehow Peter Gabriel's voice goes directly to that part of the brain which controls emotions and unlocks all of them.
Awesome Jake mate
So true. It’s like his voice box has a built-in second very dominant harmonic going on. And the quick flights of falsetto are so stirring. Awesome.
Nicely put - completely get it.
True
I think he is a Buddha. Bowie was, too.
Who’s still listening and coming back over and over to listen to this masterpiece. Moves me everytime. Thank you Mr Gabriel. 😊
This is Fantastic !. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Me
Heard it yesterday in a movie lone survivor and came here for it and also the comments
Bowie song, Gabriel vocals and a sympathetic orchestra leader, how can this not be a win ?
@@mzamocyprian1638 I need to watch that movie! I heard this cover in Stranger Things.
I have never heard a truly decent cover of Heroes, because I hold the Bowie version in such high esteem., considering it untouchable.
That was until I heard this.
The orchestral arrangement is phenomenal.
It really is. I assume that is Gabriel himself, amazing.
Truly amazing
I imagined it was the orchestra of the Arena, but it was not, they are PGabriel musicians!!
specially the end
agree.
If you ever saw the movie Lone Survivor and watched the credits while this song played.... takes it to an entirely new level and meaning.
Undoubtedly, this song is devoted to all those martyred bravehearts in military all around the world 🇺🇸🤝🇮🇳
Absolutely, brings tears to my eyes listening to this song through the credits.
Wasn't this song about the Berlin Wall Falling?
@@Operator09 Well said
As an Afghan war veteran myself, that movie wrecked me. When this song played in the credits, I couldn’t stop tears from just falling out of my face. Powerful stuff.
If I saw this live, I would've cried my guts out. So emotionally raw and inspiring. David Bowie would be proud.
#agreed
2:58 … the way the conductor summons the bass is so powerful
I can't tell you how glad I am that someone else noticed it, enjoyed it as much as I do, and pointed it out!!!
Yes, Ben Foster. He's pretty bad-ass.
one of the all time best singers of our time.
I've heard this a hundred times, and I get chills every time I hear it. Something about this song, and Peter Gabriel's amazing rendition of it, just goes out to the universe every time. We should broadcast this to the stars as the ultimate claim for the every-temporary, ever-aspiring, ever-fallible human condition. heros ..... just for one day.
Agree.BUT ONLY ONE CAN DO THIS .
One of my heroes perfoming "Heroes" written by yet another of my heroes.
This song just hits every single time I hear it.
Holy crap! Childhood wish fulfilled! Peter Gabriel meets David Bowie with orchestra!! I can die in peace now!
Really
Peter Gabriel took this already amazing song and took it to a whole new level
Thats an amazing and emotional version...but the whole "New level" doesnt exist...the original is already there
As much as I love the original, I have to agree.
Jessica i dont agree since its not my personal preference but I respect your opinion
Nadia, when has there even been a cover this perfect? I’m not sure there has. Bowie and Gabriel came up at the same time. Both were flamboyant, transcendent rock stars who used costumes and personas to articulate themselves creatively. Both dabbled in New Wave towards the end of the 70s. In short, Peter is the perfect choice to cover a song of this magnitude by one of his most illustrious peers. I’m glad you enjoy it as much as me 😊
I have to absolutely agree with you :D. I do enjoy what David Bowie has written, but his performance and style in the original song just doesn't touch me as much as Gabriel's interpretation. Peter is one of those artists who can really call himself that, an artist by heart. His skillset is quite rare these days... No disrespect to any Bowie fan, though. The man was great, no doubt about it.
I swear this song takes me somewhere and crushes every part of my soul. So damn good.
I cry everytime i listen to this song
I cant explain it either but i feel the same!
Mine too!
@@AnantManglikmy dog past away this morning and now I am here to give him the best song for him

It gives me chills because I relate it to Lone Survivor.
i kid you not, this song does not fail to give me goosebumps everytime i listen to it.
Me too as well..❤️🫂💦
Here I find myself again with this song for perhaps the 50th time. Such a beautiful song in every way, and I get chills every time!
Amazing. Took the perfect song, sung by the perfect singer.... Peter made it even better. That inflection!
Good lord-at 2:40, I closed my eyes and got goose bumps listening to this. The orchestra and the synchronistic sounds coming from the string section is something to marvel at. Not really a David Bowie fan, but Peter Gabriel knocked this one out of the park. DAM!!!!!
This arrangement was perfect for Stranger Things 1. It really hit home. This version is amazing, right along with David Bowie's original. Two brilliant versions by two brilliant singer composers.
I really hope they play this in the 4 season It actually made me cry at the end of season 3
Search for the ending of lone survivor movie and watch it. I'm a veteran and it brings me to tears now every time I hear this song
I promise if you watch it. It will bring a whole new meaning to the song
Nobody gives af about perfect strangers … this was made for lone survivor
@@delesdog For the hundreds of millions of us stranger things fans out there it does.
The original Bowie version of this is my favourite song of all time so much so I want it played at my funeral, but I am absolutely blown away by this version.
Yes a great choice! I really like Motorhead's version of Heroes...but you have to like your rock music to appreciate that version :)
@@sarkycutt9611 , Motorhead's version is powerful. Heroes are powerful.
It's one of the most emotional songs I've ever heard in my life. I'm literally in tears.
Tim Seyfelmliukov I'm sitting here crying now....
wildcatter63 Berlin Wall?
Tim Seyfelmliukov
It's a very powerful song.
It even makes me cry, as it reminds me of all the Fallen men of Operation Red Wings.
it makes you cry because your ego wants to be known that you can be a Hereo even if it's just for one day as most Heroes are not called Heroes because they lived but because they took the ultimate sacrifices so that another soul could live longer. Knowing how much mental and physical boundaries that have to be broken to help an other soul thrive in that moment is breath taking.
Trump's friend Putin gave orders to shoot people who tried to cross that wall!
Thankyou David.
Thankyou Peter.
Truly is the best friend I have ever had.
It will never be any different.
Peace 🙏 and Love.
Lone Survivor, Stranger Things, this song just brings out the feels on a phenomenal level
the orchestration on this is amazing
Isn't the arrangement beautiful?
Perfection
@@samanthawilliamson9694 yes Beautiful
It's been hard to listen to anyone else covering David Bowie the last few weeks since his death, but this - this reaches into the soul in a totally appropriate way, as only Peter Gabriel can do. Incredible.
+ Nicky Leach
I agree and very well stated. For me the best tributes ( since Davids death) have been those who worked with David , such as Rick Wakeman ( on here on CZcams- BBC) playing the piano for 'Life on Mars', it's helped me.
And as I wrote Peter captured this song as only he could.
" We can be heroes forever and ever..."
Peace
+David Brown I certainly hope that David got the chance to hear this incredible orchestral arrangement, as I can imagine he would love it - especially coming from his pal Peter Gabriel. Since my comment, of course his brilliant band did such an incredible tribute at the BRITS, with Lorde. Our hearts remain broken wide open. Such a gift to the world.
Nicky Leach: id like to hear David Bowie’s thoughts on this cause if this song had have been mine I’d have handed the rights straight over to Peter Gabriel for this in version.
So true
@@nickyleach I'm so sad it's been almost 6 years now...
Totally blown away by this incredible phenomenon, what a performance, sat here sobbing.
Proof that sometimes the light at the end of the tunnel is beautiful. Rest in peace David Bowie and thank you Peter Gabriel for this stunning epitaph.
I was sobbing when he sang heroes. I forgot I was at hope and stood up and clapped. Awesome.💖💖
Seeing PG in June, this will be the one that makes me cry ❤
It's an astonishingly rendition. I like to think that David Bowie would have loved this...
He did...he sang in concert with Peter Gabriel it's on youtube.
I think Sting's in it too.
I love the minimalism approach to the orchestration, simple stunning!
John Metcalfe, qui n'est pas cité (on voit son nom sur la première page d'une partition). Je trouverai le nom du chef et celui de l'orchestre !
On Dec 13th I buried my mother. 6 weeks prior I buried my brother Michael. This song, the live version, I chose to celebrate their lives on video. People kept asking me how do you feel and are you ok. This song is how I felt. I wanted to show my heart and how I'll forever carry them in it. Thanks David n Peter.

Peter Gabriel..... Legend

This is Peter Gabriel? I remember him in the 80s...wow...time does fly.
sounds even better now.
He’s always had a majestic voice
Stunning. It's now a tribute to David Bowie. Rest In Peace David.
What an absolute masterpiece.
The one thing about Peter is when he is singing, he is singing to you. Even in a crowd, he is singing to you.
You cannot hear this song without getting covered in goosebumps
One afternoon in July 1977, David Bowie was looking out of the window of Hansa Studio in Berlin when he noticed a couple kissing near the Berlin Wall.
“I always said it was a couple of lovers by the Wall that prompted the idea for Heroes,” Bowie told Classic Rock in 2015. “Actually, it was [Bowie producer] Tony Visconti and his girlfriend. Tony was married at the time, so I couldn’t talk about it. But I can now say that the lovers were Tony and a German girl [Antonia Maass] that he’d met while we were in Berlin. I think possibly his marriage was in the last few months. And it was very touching because I could see that Tony was very much in love with this girl, and it was that relationship which sort of motivated the song.”
This is probably the most beautifully crafted song I have ever heard.
No words. Just ears. The man is a genius.
This is the most beautiful piece of music I’ve ever heard
Wow! Just got back from a combat veteran’s retreat. Didn’t realize this was played for the men of operation red wing at the end of lone survivor. Wow…………unlocking the tears, and tears and more tears……………wow

This version sends chills down my spine, the emotion in this is incredible.
This is epic. I don't know how Peter didn't lose it emotionally while singing.
Peter Gabriel est une œuvre d'art vivante..... une voix inégalable.
He broke my heart open all over again with this rendition….. As a young girl I thought that if the North Wind could sing ( in a human voice) they would sound like Peter Gabriel…..
When he sings he looks like he has no idea how good he actually is. Magnificent cover.
RIP Bowie. You will be sorely missed.
Awesomeness Hippopotamus dit lied brengt emoties naar boven, maar goede . Hij zingt dit voor iedereen,we kunnen voor een dag een held zijn en nog veel meer,
Awesomeness Hippopotamus
I still remember waking up at 3:30am from my friend and roommate choking on his own throw up. Seeing him blue and gasping but not conscious still and I was drunk as well but for several minutes I was sober and sprinted to him and lifted him up and began clearing his throat with my fingers before turning him over. Such a small act at the time. We joke about it from time to time but there were 8 other people still passed out around us at the time. Johnny is a dear friend of mine still. That was over 15 years ago. Hes successful and has 2 kids and a wife now. He is still a very good friend.
It takes a real artist to take a great song and make it better.
2:56 damn, he really felt that bass
Would literally be me if I conducted that orchestra 😍
Is this possibly the greatest cover ever? Correct me if I'm wrong...
darren austria I disagree. It is great because it is an original interpretation. And a very good one at that.
Its good, but the Sound of Silence by Disturbed is just as good!
Marcus Norgen, you are so so right. He performed this in Berlin when the Wall came down; my mom was a Berliner and her family holocaust victims. I just sobbed; it was such a brilliant experience.
This is an excellent rendition!!!!!
You’re wrong
Bowie wrote it, but for 4 minutes 12 seconds, Peter Gabriel owned it.... Peter, I salute you sir 🤗
his continued youthful exuberance, keeps him the premier performer. I am always in awe....
I saw this live (not this venue, but in Massachusetts) and I get goosebumps every single time I hear it now. I had wanted to see Peter Gabriel live for so many years and this was the first time. When the wave of sound hit me I started to cry. So beautiful, so moving. And, as a cellist, I loved being able to see him with a symphony orchestra, it was perfect.
Peter Gabriel. One of a kind.

True “Genesis” and genius Peter Gabriel
More than half of these comments are talking about either Stranger Things or David Bowie, but i think Peter Gabriel deserves much more love and Genesis too. And, look, what a coincidence! You're talking about Genesis. Thx!
This guy has a blessed mind.
The significance of this song...goes way beyond what many people think. Its sad. So, so sad.
You made me cry sir💙 There is nothing better being alive. Unfortunately some people are not lucky enough. I know we all will die one day but some people go early and some people leave this world at the right time. RIP to the all innocent victims who passed away early and didnt get a chance listening to this masterpiece cover.💙
You have put so beautifully....
The greatest cover song of all time. Fit perfectly in both Lone Survivor and Stranger Things
I've probably pressed the play button 200 times and I just can't get enough of it. Food for my soul. Epic arrangement with orchestra and Gabriel. Perfect
I connect this Song so much to my late wife. We have been together since we were 16. 2016 she got diagnosed with cancer. She never hesitated to take up the fight. And what a fight it was. Well, she lost in 2018, but went down swinging. She only stopped when I came from the doctor and told her that we have to say goodbye. Only then she was able to let go. I kept her in my arms till she arrived safely on the other side. Since then, my heart breaks every day. But she was a Hero. She always took care for all of us, cheered us up, gave us hope... I miss her so much. She was 43 when she had to go.
My wife had cancer too. Thankfully she had her 5 year anniversary. I'm so sorry for you. I'm glad that you can take some comfort in music. I'm sure she is with you always in spirit until you meet again.
She's a hero. And you are one too. I'm sorry for your loss but your wife is still here with all of us. Thank you for sharing your story and I wish nothing but the best for you in this life.
Hope you're doing well friend! =) Make her proud!

I am very grateful for musicians like David Bowie, and Peter Gabriel. Without David Bowie, this world would not have been the same and this song would never have been written. What a phenomenal interpretation of Heroes mr Peter Gabriel. A true masterpiece
This is so moving! It is very relieving that good music can still be made in the days fashion and glorified film clips. Glamour seems to be more important than the feel of a song, ironically, visual over sound, this is so wrong!
One of the best vocalists and artist of all time. Love ya, Peter!
In complete agreement
Saw Gabriel and Bowie in the Greyhound Croydon Summer 1972. I feel blessed.
Spellbinding sound with that voice and strings....
The whole orchestra really brings this song to another level. I've got goosepimples.
From GENESIS to SOLO, Gabriel never stops growing as a musician. Whether using native sounds from other countries or symphonic music with an orchestra backing, Gabriel never likes being boxed into a mold. Gabriel is, well, Gabriel.
This song is absolutely amazing! I wish I could have seen it live😀
I prefer this over the original. Not that the Original is bad. This is just a whole new level for me
