I had a 2012 Durango that was totaled when an uninsured BMW 650 rear ended it and totaled out both vehicles. I now have a 2016 Durango with a 3.6 Pentastar just as the first one did. Never had a problem with either one of them. I've always found the handling to be outstanding and the ride quality is great.
Bruce Solomon thanks for the back story
Both fighting for the center armrest
wouldn't need to fight if you were in a Tahoe! ;)
Jose Magana lol it did look somewhat cramped in the durango.
Jose Magana - imagine they are going to head on crash at 45 mph, you have to take a shotgun seat in one of them. I'm taking the Tahoe every time...
Yeah my Tahoe and Silverado have big armrest
Jayden Miner yea they do
That 5.3 is pretty impressive it def surprised me the power it has
Dodge should've set them up against the 6.2 Tahoe instead of 5.3
RML1993 there is no 6.2 Tahoe...
Yet
When does the RST go on sale? I thought it was out already.
Doesn't matter... the new RST with the 6.whatever is 8000lbs.... LOL.
Patrick Rich I believe it goes on sale this fall
Tahoe's only weigh 5,600lbs when well equipped.
BREAKING: High performance truck is much faster than much cheaper standard truck in tests put on by high performance truck maker. More at 11.
Patrick Rich is the Tahoe much cheaper?
60k-65k and you only get the 5.3
chevydodge88 ???? It's $45k to $65k on what you get
Meme Major69 srt8 is top trim for a Durango so I compared it to Tahoe premier
Meme Major69 also remember that that's 2017 vs 2018 we know what the durango* is going for and we will find out what the ltz sell for when they release it
I really enjoy the honesty of the reviews, and the iteration and reiteration of comparing vehicles that are in the same class and are as similar as possible. Thanks for the great content of your videos, TFL!
I agree with the brake controller, however, that boat trailer should have surge brakes, not electric. Other factor in towing, is overall mass of the towing vehicle and wheelbase. Boats, if on a good trailer, inherently tow pretty well. Probably why FCA chose that.
Towing is indeed a lot more than acceleration. Brakes are huge as noted. A real test is take both of these out on a curvy twisty hilly roads with a lot of bumps. Then we can see how they really perform.
Thanks TFL for uploading this. It has confirmed my choice in GM for my wife's rig.
THE Durango is still the fastest 3 row SUV out there
The Durango is a good bargain for the money. You get a luxury interior, aggressive exterior, can tow a lot, plus you can fit a family. That's awesome.
David Nacson but it'll only last 250,000 miles, Tahoe and burb will last 500,000
TechTubeHD Reviews Are you kidding me? Saying something is one thing compared to proving it. Now prove it.
TechTubeHD Reviews who spends that much on a vehicle and plans to keep it 500k miles...
Good bargain? 75k for a Durango? I dont think its a bargain even with the engine and extra features.
David Nacson They were gonna discontinue the Durango untill Dodge started stuffing hellcat motors into these decade old design. It wasn't selling..
I'm not fan of dodge but that's a damn good looking vehicle. and the Tahoes kinda looks like a hearse
Robert Smith the 2007-2013 Tahoe's look a lot better
blackericdenice *since
Robert Smith i think the hearse look doesn't apply to the tahoe so much as it does the suburban. They ride sooo well its incredible.
Robert Smith Its a SRT obviously
Robert Smith Yeah u are correct all dodge products looks great...!!.
Can someone please explain to FLT that the Formula they were towing has surge brakes, and does not need or use an electric brake controller?
Also, what a great SRT Durango Advert. Never saw any comparison of the two in this video. Guess you gotta pay the bills somehow!!!!
Yes there was allot of squad in the durango! Chevy Tahoe looked the same as when the boat was put on the hitch! I like the durango allot but it bothers me that is close to the ground i understand is a sports suv but the tahoe inspires more confidence on road or off road!
how is this a mashup. you towed for about 1 minute with the tahoe. then just drove around with a boat in the Durango for 8 minutes.
You don't even need to go into the SRT for the impressive Durango towing capabilities. I tow with my '15 RT Durango and does a heck of a job towing my travel trailer the is 30' almost 7k pounds
What’s the wheel base difference between the two? And curb weight? I would be more comfortable towing that much in a longer vehicle. I also would prefer a body on frame.
Please title this video as a commercial, not a comparison. Ridiculously biased. I've owned a number of Chrysler products over the years and have never failed to be disappointed. I really like how he says the two were equal in squat. I guess if you don't actually look at both vehicles, you could say that. I'll take the GM all day. Even with the smaller engine.
rogermurph101 it wasn't a commercial it was a review on the Durango
Funny how Roman doesnt question that the Durango is a "truck" although it is a unibody vehicle just like the Ridgeline and that vehicle he made a big stink about, yet the Ridgeline at least has a truck bed in the back.
Good point. He was going on and on to that poor Honda guy that he was in a Pilot instead of a Ridgeline. SMH!
Can't wait for the SRT VS RST videos. That will help my final decision.
The Durango is not a truck. I would drive cross-country in the Tahoe with a boat that size, I wouldn't in the Durango.
so you have to spend 75 k on a mid size dodge to get the similar tow rating as a 45,000 Tahoe and the Tahoe still has higher tow ratings and trailer breaks, with the extra 30k you can add a warranty covered supercharger and have significantly more power than the 392 dodge without coming close to the same cost. You also get more interior space and storage in a Tahoe.
Dalton Michaels no u don't the current 5.7 Durango that is prices below 40k has better towing rating than the Tahoe.
it out tows it by 200lbs my bad/ but even according to SAE the j2807 test standards have "wiggle room" and im guessing when TFL truck does an actual side by side grade test up the IKE it will show if the SRT is fudging its number or not. I don't see how in a real world test a mid size suv is going to out tow a full size body on frame. even if it can it may be less than safe feeling.
Like when TFL tested the duallies this past season. The duramax had the lowest ratings so they tested all the trucks at that lower rating to make it a fair test , yet somehow all the TFL guys said the the duramax felt more stable and safer than the dodge and ford even though the ford and dodge were technically rated higher. Why in the hell would the less safe Feeling trucks have a higher tow ratings?
what your view on my previous comment? hit (show more)
The 08 Tahoe hybrid has a 6.0L engine alongside electric. 360 HP plus battery. I got it for only 13k instead of the 75k of the Dodge
Will you guys do a review of the Tahoe rst shortly after it's out?
While an integrated brake controller is a nice addition, I dont find it to be a deal breaker in the least. With great aftermarket controllers like the Prodigy P3, I'd assume it would be a 5 minute install if Dodge provides a nice harness like most larger trucks and SUVs do. That being said, for $75k fully optioned the market customer for this might expect that.
i believe the wiring is already there and is just not hooked up. but like you said for the price of the durango it should be standard
So in other words, the 5.3 held its own and with the break controller its still a formatable SUV. The durango is nice but less room for gear if your using it for camping or boating etc. I would wait for the 6.3L chevy
IMHO, there's no comparison between these since both are different.
I really like how the Durango looks and thumbs up for the 6.4 .
The new RST Tahoe might be a 5.3 with cosmetic package according to Rumors but I won't be surprised.
Awesome i think this will be my next SUV
The towing brake comes with the towing package. It's not standard if it's an aftermarket hitch. Likely the case.
Nice to Trucks for you to see good job
This is a press release video, so there will be some sort of bias. But to be clear, the Tahoe they have is not Apples to Apples. This Tahoe has the 5.3 with 355 HP. That's about 100 hp less than the SRT Durango. It's a body on frame vehicle and tows about the same weight without AWD. It has 4WD. And it's naturally aspirated. With a built in break controller you'll need that when towing. And everyone knows you can trust a 5.3. Good luck with that 6.2
Or even the rt Durango, if you are going to use the 5.3 chevy?
You should do a Durango SRT vs the Tahoe RST with the 6.2 that seen apples to apples...
What axle ratio did Tahoe have? 3.42, 3.08?
I like the motor in the dodge but I like the body on frame construction of the Tahoe and the reliability of a transfer case.
Dodge didn't put the engine in the Durango because the pre-2014 Durango looked like a rolling aardvark, and didn't sell. They were close to discontinuing, but then. . .2014 happened.
That dodge looks sick
Anybody know when the Durango SRT will be released for the public? Unless I change my mind later on, I would like to trade in my Charge R/T for one of these Durango's.
I agree with Roman. The Durango should have gotten the SRT treatment a long time ago.
I have a Gen 2 HEMI Durango, and would have love for them to make an SRT version.
Hell, they should have stuffed the 8.3 V10 from the Viper :)
Being that it was built on the Ram 1500 platform, if it fit in the Ram.... It would have fit in the Durango.
Ahh.... Durango SRT10. One can only dream.
I like how they only compare to the tahoe in towing since its 8700 Durango and 8400 tahoe but leave out the expedition and navigator
Doesn't the Explorer compete with the Durango and Expedition with the Tahoe?
2016 Shelbygt350R ehh kinda, the Durango is just that good that they put it against more challenging competition, and still is able to surpass the Tahoe and other.
It's only best selling because the government buys them, the Durango is muchhh more luxurious. And practical? Lmao! The Durango tows 8600 lbs and the explorer on the other hand can only tow 5000 lbs. Now that's practical!
The new Explorer sucks, the R/T Durango smokes it, let alone the SRT. Rather have good old RWD platform anyways. The Explorer Sport barely beats the old 5.3 Trailblazer, and the Trailblazer SS smokes it.
I'm a huge fan of Chevy but not of the 5.3....get the 6.2 it almost gets better mileage
If it almost gets better mileage doesn't that just mean it doesn' thave better mileage.
I'd love to see the '18 F150 3.5EB do this.
What's the difference between unibody and body on frame?
body on frame is where the frame is basically box shaped (cross-section) and is bolted on the vechile. it is used only with trucks and full-size SUVs which are based off a truck. the Tahoe is just a Silverado truck underneath
unibody is where the whole vehicle is one piece without a separate boxed frame
Towed a car with my "Regular" Hemi (5.7) Grand Cherokee. I could tell it was there because it had to kick down to 6th to maintain 80-85MPH up some of the hills on I80. Yet I was still able to keep speeds without much complaint. 10/10 would do again.
Tom Fielding I'm assuming you have the ZF8 8spd auto? I've heard mixed reviews on the 8spd for towing capabilities. Basically the argument against it is that it has to downshift a lot when under heavy loads. I'd like to test one for myself. I've tested the 8spd Silverado under stress and it did alright. Wondering how the ZF8 would compare!
It absolutely did not downshift a lot with the Hemi. Maybe with the 3.6 it would, for obvious reasons. I was able to sustain 80 throughout the mountains in western/central PA with no troubles, with only occasional dropdowns either to maintain that speed or when I went to pass. That being said, there were instances where it held 7th longer. Which I let it do, so as to not lug the engine. It was an easy trip.
It is supposed to shift a lot to keep it in sweet spot of torque curve. All 8 spped rams Ive had, 3, have been great
Hope the new 6.2 Tahoe will be available as a police package so you don't have to pay for an LTZ to have the 6.2 since the 5.3 doesn't quite cut it for me. If I can get a 6.2 Tahoe police package, I can get a Callaway or Lingenfelter blower kit and have a quick family car.
Gotta love Roman. His hair looked like he rubbed a balloon on his head and he could care less.
I was sold on this thing replacing my 4Runner V8 till the $75k price. Good lord!
What about the Yukon, escalate, or the Tahoe rst?
How to troll Dodge, "hey why are you basing this test off a 5.3 Tahoe?" "Oh we're a unibody SUV we handle better than a body on frame" "oh okay so what about the 6.2L?" "We believe we're better" yeah okay
I love the looks of the Durango wish the wife liked it lol. I can't give up my truck bed.
While I'm Dodge all the way I really wish it was body on frame for towing. Same with the grand Cherokee. Both of them have a rediculous towing capacity and power. But personally to tow a large boat or camper often it needs a proper frame.
I prefer the Tahoe for towing, but if I don't need to tow I'll go for the Durango..
Luis rodriguez except the Durango will last 250,000 miles while the bulletproof chevy 5.3's will last about 500,000
TechTubeHD Reviews a 5.3 wont last that long...nothing new will last that long....nothing is made like it use to be
TechTubeHD Reviews my dad owned a 5.3 suburban and it had 200k before we got rid of it but it did burn a decent amount of oil.The only real problem was that fuel lines and other things just started to rot.
My '01 Tahoe LT 5.3 has over 245K miles and it only uses a quart of oil in-between oil changes and I've owned this truck for 16 years.
Nicholas Posey actually if u maintain and take care of your vehicle it will last that long
Just to let you know, a brake controller would not mean a thing towing that boat. Ninety percent of all boat trailers are running non electric surge brakes and they use the four wire trailer plug not the seven wire plug. When the truck comes out I bet you will see an optional built in brake controller.
I hope that someday you can revisit this comparo on the Ike Gauntlet! :D
"Actually more. By 100 pounds"
good so I can bring extra Mountain Dew to drink while on my boat
Roman is so stuck on the built in trailer brake controller. Our Durango has the tow package and came pre-wired with everything for trailer brakes except the controller. There in a plug under the dash where you plug your preferred controller in and your good to go.
A have a gmc yukon 2015 but i wish it had the horsepower of a durango srt
What is the song name in the beginning
What's is he talking about? That Durango has some serious rear end squat! The fact it's lower is going to increase overall tongue weight. Throw a few more pounds back there and you'll be lighting the tree tops!
It's got power... Cool! But this is more of an advertisement than a "head to head".
Grandfather and grandmother towed a pontoon boat with a 03 Tahoe it prob weighed 8700 and it towed great
Roman you should compare it with the Nissan Armada i really want to know what's better
Not a fair comparison. The RST Tahoe features the 6.2 with 420horses and 450lbs of torque.
Sorry Dodge, but you guys can't even begin to compare full size GM SUVs in regards to versatility and capability to a mid sized unibody Durango.
I don't care what engine you put in it.
Man O War the durango still stays at 435 hp wile youre tahoe is at 380 375 . All that with drive train power lost :)
This is my next car 🙏🙌
There's absolutely no way I would pull a 7000 pound boat without a break controller. Do this test again with the same vehicles going down hill for miles and the brakes on that Durango will over heat.
Boat trailers have surge brakes
Curtis Reid the durag has bigger breaks
Trevor is correct, the break controller isn't really a benefit for towing a boat because they don't use electric breaks. Any load that does use standard trailer breaks would benefit though.
Surge brakes on boat trailers are typical. There are trailer manufacturers that have electric trailer brakes and some with electric over hydraulic. They have their benefits over surge brakes when towing in terrain with a lot of elevation changes. I have electric brakes on my 6000# boat trailer. They work excellent.
Curtis Reid the rango has hill decend feature which engine brakes as well the brakes are over 15in FYI over heating them will require extreme abuse
Boat trailers don't need brake controllers because they all use surge brakes. As a matter of fact, The Ram/Dodge/FCA UConnect/EIC won't even record boat trailers because factory brake controllers on these vehicles only register if the trailer has electric brakes which the boat trailer does not have. So unless you are towing a travel trailer or utility/car trailer or the like, you wouldn't need a brake controller in this Durango. Now with that being said, FCA should have a brake controller as standard equipment on all their Trucks, vans and SUV's for the amount of money they are charging.
If I'm paying almost $75000 I would spend a few more thousand and get an Escalade
You should do the Durango SRT vs The Cadillac Escalade!
9:28 "Especially the RST version of this Tahcolorado,"
that is a really nice boat
They're not trucks lmao, I love when suv owners say that
its not hard to install, or have installed, a brake controller, if thats the only difference. the Durango will be a lot more fun when you unhook the trailer too!
The Durango looks more aerodynamic than that brick in the wind called a Tahoe.
What once was a medium duty SUV is now a large duty SUV.
If I'm paying 75k I'm taking a Tahoe with the 6.2l with 420hp when it comes out
I now own them both. The Durango is beast, the Tahoe has some giddy up but not in the same ballpark as the Durango.
@@seanmckenzie3482 OK millionaire
the L33 Silverado with a 4:10 rear end kills both... thats my 2005 with 275/60R20 Nitto terra grapplers just with a cold air intake and true duals... after market parts are way cheaper to bump up performance than bells & whistles...
Roman I might be corrected if wrong here. But towing a boat, unlike other trailers, but boat trailers do not have electric brakes what they do have have is surge brakes! With no need for a controller!
What FCA won't tell anyone is that the Durango is based on the Mercedes X166 (GL/GLS Class) platform. I guess this was MBZ's divorce gift to Chrysler..
This channel has never done fair comparisons. They’re always skewed in one way or another
I wonder if Dodge going to make SRT RAM too?! Would be interesting!
I find it funny that this thing has more torque than every half-ton truck other than the F-150, which it matches. I'm not saying it's a better tow vehicle, because it definitely isn't, but it's just kind of funny.
Durango SRT was pretty impressive. 75k for luxury and performance truck isn't bad in today's market.
What music track is that
That boat trailer has surge brakes so a controller is not needed .
Who would spend 75k on this when you can get a Yukon Denali with the 6.2/8 speed for 5 grand less? It's larger, rides better, has way more interior room, they both look good so that's a wash, and will get better fuel economy.
I want it.. I want it.. Gimme Gimme Gimme..
This and a Corvette Grand Sport in my Garage NOW!
Why not go with the GMC Yukon Denali with the 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 engine with 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque and 8-speed automatic transmission.
I thought the Durango was discontinued ?
Crazy price! I have a 17 charger scatpack and the sticker was 47k. I don't see me spending 30k more for a SUV. I could just buy a new track and have the charger. Really if your pulling something over 5k pounds you should have a 2500. 1500 size trucks are for little things.
7,000 lbs 24ft bow rider? My boat is a 23 ft Yamaha SX230 Jet boat, also bow rider. That weighs 3,200lbs with the trailer, so where does that extra 4,000lbs come from?
American Track Master You don't have a 350 Chevrolet motor and stern outdrive. My 22ft Cobalt weights 4500lbs dry and has a 2500lb tandem trailer. Does your trailer have double axels?also, Formula and Cobalt are some of the best built boats. They're tanks.
Troy Strain yes it's a dual axel
American Track Master He said boat and trailer. The 350 weighs about 600 and outdrive about 1100lbs
A guy around the way from me has a Yamaha boat and I've seen them at the lake, they sure draft nicely and corner hard!
Of course the provide the standard 5.3 Tahoe to compete against their 6.2 Durango doesn't seem like a fair test to me
compaire ot to a 6.2
towing 7k lbs, having a brake controller is not a security back up its a full fledge legal issue. most stats require a brake controller over weight around 3k lbs
it looked like the durango did squat a good bit
Dose chevy make a Tahoe with the 6.2? Cause I mean the 5.3 going against the 6.4 hemi come on that is not even close over 100hp difference
Should’ve compared it to the V6 Durango or rst Tahoe
$75 K? insane!
Great suv's Tahoe look's more confidente.Srt.8 Durango go dodge go well come to street racing technolegy✔
Best quote "it is what defines this car.." It is a good car but if you want a truck you have to go with the Tahoe.
