Yes! You figured it out! Hunters aren't heroes, they are selfish. Togashi has successfully been writing this series in shades of grey instead of black and white. Most of the characters have done both good and bad deeds. Even the main characters have been "evil" by certain view points. It just depends on whose side people are on...they all have their own thoughts, feelings, and goals.
I swear lots of people never figure that out. It is so annoying. So good job! I hope you can enjoy the Troupe now. They are very much vigilante/robin hood style. Won't go into detail because spoilers. Just keep watching. XD

It's more like "hunters don't act along the will of "heroes vs villains", instead they act in a way realistic and relateable way, how it actually would be in the real world.
@@tadk1312 Yes I know. The real world is grey...all about factions and whose side you are on. The winners write history in their favor. That is why I love Togashi's works; both HunterxHunter and Yu Yu Hakusho have their characters more real and worlds grey.
Hunters are mercenaries for hire. They do their own thing for their own gain. Hell they could even quit in the middle of their jobs if they wanted to--depending on if they just don't feel like it or if it is against their loyalties/morals etc.

Chrollo has to meet certain requirements to capture a person's abilities. The specific requirements are not gone into detail about but during the fight it's made clear by both chrollo, Silva and zeno through their thoughts and dialogue suggest he would not be able to take theirs midcombat. The book has to be open for any ability in it to manifest and once closed it disappears. The person whose ability he takes loses access to that ability apparently permanently as far as we know at this point if the anime and manga.

When Chrollo steals hatsu, the person who got stolen it from is only not able to use that hatsu but he is still able to use nen (and probably create another hatsu). Not a single time after Chrollo vs Hisoka was Shal able to use that hatsu.

Chrollo didnt want Neon to get killed because he stole her ability. Once a person that he stole an ability from dies this ability then vanishes from the book and he wont be able to use it anymore

Chrollo was the one who hired him to kill the ten dons for the troupe. It was just business as usual, whoever killed whoever first would get the pay.
Don't sleep on Chrollo, Zeno basically suggested that Chrollo would kill him 1-1 if his aim was to win and not focus on trying to steal his Nen ability.

Nope, that's not what Zeno suggested. He basically said that he wouldn't be sure of winning, if Chrollo decided to go for the kill. He basically negated the statement he made previously of "Of course I will win".

The Dons hired the Zoldyck assassins( Sliva and Zeno) to protect the auction/mafia. Chrollo hired a Zoldyck assassin (Illumi) to kill the dons. Illumi is in no way working for or with Chrollo. Hisoka too, He doesnt care what The Phantom Troup does, he only wants to fight the boss. Illumi and Hisoka shouldn't even be considered friends, just acquaintances with no Attachments or association to anything but themselves (except their names and professions). Just think of Hisoka and Illumi as Chaotic neutrals towards e v e r y b o d y .

To clarify chrollo can steal someone’s nen ability after meeting his conditions but to continue to use a specific power the person he stole it from has to be kept alive, for example they did not kill the shadow beast called “the owl” that’s why he was able to use his mantle ability when fighting Zeno, and he kept the daughter alive so that he could tell the fortunes of the other spiders. chrollo’s nen ability is really complex and we’ve even touched on the confusing parts....if you know you know... “bookmark”

Kurapika has no choice if he wants to get all of the eyes, he has to infiltrate the mafia and ranks up. He knows where those are, he also knows the boss isn't going to sell them bar extraordinary circumstances so he's in no hurry to get them back. It does hurt like hell for him though of course, but his objective is to get all the eyes and he needs a position in the underworld for that.
Also, Hisoka was incredibly smart in changing the prophecy. Since he left something incriminating in it, it didn't even occur to the troupe that he changed the prophecy.
