  • The demand for smaller city cars fitted with automatic transmission is a growing market segment worldwide as traffic conditions constantly change and the convenience and comfort of an automatic appeals to more and more commuters.
The Mazda2 may be the baby of the Mazda range in SA, but that doesn’t exclude it from matching its larger siblings in offering a quality product at a highly competitive price. Throughout the interior in particular, the current Mazda trend of adding luxury, spec and comfort items is immediately apparent. From the padded and soft touch dash and fascia, standard heads-up display and many more comfort and safety features, you are left with no doubt that Mazda have successfully moved towards the premium end of the market.
The 2 was mildy facelifted last year. The Kodo design language is still clear in the sharp angles and body creases. Minor changes to lights and addition of Daytime Running lights are also visible.
The entire 2 range is now powered by the very familiar 1.5L 4 cylinder petrol engine. This gives 85kW and 148Nm in the relatively small and light body, translating into perky performance plus excellent economy. Skyactive technology is applied to both engine and chassis which combines the perky performance mentioned with excellent road manners. Although intended as a city car, the 2 is sure footed and fun to drive through a mountain pass as well.
The conventional 6 speed torque converter automatic drives through the front wheels. Generally smooth and relaxed in operation, this is yet another Mazda where I simply avoid activating the “Sport” mode. I have found that this simply holds the ratios to much higher revs without any other real benefit.
Fuel economy for the test period involving mixed usage was a superb 6.3l/100km, proving the success of the Skyactive technology yet again.
Dynamic spec is the middle level available in the range and certainly does not lack for anything. 6 Airbags are standard across the range and there are Isofix points in the rear.
Currently priced at R302 300 as tested this includes Mazda’s Unlimited Km warranty and service plan.

I'm guessing it uses a normal Aisin 6 speed auto, all sport does on a low end Aisin auto is the hold the gears for as long as it can. I have a 2007 Astra H that does same. Made a video of it on my channel years ago.
