There was no mention of 8 inch hail. The biggest I seen was baseball size.

I am 69 years and I can remember the year before I left school I was playing rounders afternoon lessons and the heavens opened with giant hailstones. As I arrived home in our garden it was full of these very big hailstones all piled up by our greenhouse, it was quite exciting , biggest id ever seen or seen since. That would have been 1969 or 1970 in Leeds england.
Good grief. Those hailstones are deadly.
Be more precise. France is big and many areas had no hail and no rain.
