  • The legendary Swedish death metallers Hypocrisy release their new album Worship (their first in 8 years) on 26th November 2021 via Nuclear Blast. A chat with the main man Peter Tägtgren about the album isn't complete unless we cover his extensive production credits, so we talk about his work with Celtic Frost, Immortal, and many more!

After listening to Hypocrisy's Abducted, Dimmu Borgir's Enthrone Darkness Triumphant and Dark Funeral's The Secrets of the Black Arts, I used to do my research about the studios where bands used to record their albums back in the day. I'm talking mainly late 90s and early 2000s here. If a band recorded at The Abyss , I'd be immediately all over it. More often than not, it'd be a great album. Peter's legacy and contribution to Metal is huge and will become legendary in time, I'm sure.
Connecting this to the conversation you had with Barker, have you ever wondered how Cruelty and the Beast would have sounded if recorded at The Abyss? I do treasure the fact that Cradle never pursued that sound and perhaps recording it at The Abyss would have put them a bit too close to what bands like Dimmu Borgir where already achieving but, Jesus Christ, talk about food for imagination.
By the way, Hypocrisy's self titled is also my favorite from them! We do share a lot of common ground regarding our musical tastes, mate.
    Cheers!

There was a long while I thought Cruelty would have been better if it had been produced by Peter, although I've changed my thinking and believe Kit Woolven would have been the best man for the job. I'd love to help Peter write his biography, warts and all, it'd be fascinating stuff! Good to hear from you mate.

@@ScarsandGuitarspodcast Kit would have been the ideal producer for Cruelty, but even Dusk had its criticism at the time regarding its production. Black Metal back then was all about cold textures and Dusk sounded too warm and velvety compared to the rest of the genre (and their previous releases), which drew its criticism. The band acquiesced. But you and I (and Stuart) know that's an integral part of what really makes that album so good and special. In fact, Stuart's guitar tone on that album has been my holy grail tone ever since I've been playing the guitar...
      Have you contacted Les, yet?

@@JaimeNoro it’s interesting isn’t it, back then, I actually never thought of them as having much in common with Mayhem and other supreme black metal; I (still feel) CoF should have been the next Iron Maiden. Stu is such a killer NWoBHM style guitarist, add the extreme metal element and it’s a winning formula.
RE Les; there is hope! He accepted my Facebook friend request and I think you saw my message to him. Hopefully he reads it.

Very much everything Peter Tagtgren touches is great. Hypocrisy has been in my top 5 rotation since the early 90's... and always great to have the opportunity to see them live.

Some kind of funny little story: Back in the '90, there was a Dutch radio station, 120 Watt, which was metal oriented. I would tape the songs and listen those tapes on a walkman, or my stereoset. So, one day, the band The Abyss was on air, but I was 14 or 15, didn't now this band, English is not my first language and for ages I wrote the bandname as Diabiss.
edit: The song was Satan's Majestic Empire, which I did write correct

Please cope with me and read, please!
When i was i pre-highschool, a teen, i had my painting in the school wall-of-galerry, since the top ones went there. Our names were written on the back on the paintings, so they werent seen on the front. There was a girl, not in my class, who sighned her name on top of my damn drawing, claiming it was her art...
The girl did NOT lend me materials, nor skills, nor nothing. she was pretty much a noone to me, and my work.
The teacher fixed things up i guess and it was just school after all, BUT tell me - am I overprojecting this memory on Peter and Lindeman's situation? Am i the only one who thinks that Peter was treated UNFAIR by Till????
Why would anyone write their OWN NAME on a mutually made project? I grew up with that project's music AND I DIDNT KNOW that Peter was behind the energy that was given from it.. i know no german language so the text is nothing to me... No decent human would questin things like ''oh its called after the vocal, BUT can there be a chance that hes not behind it all?' ......... I am angry for Peter.. I hope he visits Bulgaria soon, i WILL go on a concert with him in it !

Also to add to my last comment, I had finished my full-length and was working on my third self-created, self recorded, self mixed and mastered album and they cost me everything, my life, my equipment, my gear, my dignity and my health. I sincerely hope they have it done to them one day. I have only ever known scumbags and losers who use women. Real men would never do what they did to me. By the way, they never hardly worked at all when they suddenly had money and new belongings, as I lost everything. I'm not an opportunist, I create my own art and music and all of it was ruined or stolen. You're not men, you're pathetic excuses for males who wouldn't know what a man is at all.

I don't believe shit, it doesn't suit me. But it's hella interesting mythology-wise. xD
You know, that thing religion once did. Funny, how unorganized belief works. No offense meant ofc, it's just entertainment for me; sort of philosophizing. Just keep it human xD
    xD
