    Riding a bike isn't one I expected to be on this list, thanks for busting that myth for me!
    As a sighted person it's less complicated for me, but if I'm in a place I don't know very well, I use Google Maps to figure out my route. If it's a country / area I'm not too familiar with I also look up local customs. A friend of mine actually Googled how to use a zebra crossing because he wanted to check that it worked the same in the US as it does in the UK haha (it does).

    I'm really glad to see you and others on CZcams educating people about the variety of vision problems that can happen. It's kind of weird how people assume that vision is either 100% blind or 100% correctable. And it leads to some really dumb comments... (as I'm sure you know!)
    And yes, double yes to the contrast thing! XD This is why my furniture is dark and my walls are white. lol

    I am legally blind in Australia. I am from Sydney and got around there with a monocular to read bus numbers. However It was much easier as I grew up there and spent 24 years there sighted so I knew where most places were and how to get around. I now Live in Melbourne and struggle somewhat to go places. I get trams and that is about it. I normally just go from work to home and with the wife driving if we go somewhere. I would love to live in America but unsure about getting work there. Thanks for your great vids and taking the time to rad this if you did.

    I am someone with both vision and hearing issues. I just found out about public transportation here in our small town for elderly and disabled people 6 months ago. I did use a can at night some years ago. I don't go out much at night now. I have found your accessability videos very helpful. Also, it has helped me explain the situation to others easier. I can show them what it is like. Say, yes I can see you, but at the same time I loose you. it shifts in and out. yes, I can navigate but maybe it is by a color because my detail just left or white spots like lights just obscured everything. yes, I have glasses but that does not mean my vision is corrected.

      Yea, there's still plenty of areas I can't take the bus to. I just do what I can though. Byses are a bit scary sometimes with all of the charactersbthat also need to ride. Lol. But I'd say, most of the time other passengers have helped me navigate or orientate me so I know where I'm at.

    I am hoping to move into a city soon, as there are no options for transportation (except for medical appts). I walk everywhere and always use a white cane. I'm an 18-year-old, near-sighted person (meaning that the farther things are, the harder it is for me to see/read without glasses). Despite my age, I do not have a driver's license let alone a car to drive. I could ride a bike alternatively, but every time I try, I lose balance and nearly fall into the road, so riding down busy streets terrifies me. I often take the bus because my student card lets my ride for free, but if I'm running really late, I usually end up using Uber/Lyft (which is usually a last resort since each ride is $5-6 minimum).

    I have heart issues and knee and back issues so elevators are a necessity for me for most places. It's hard sometimes to walk long distances and that's not because I'm lazy it's because I hurt. People judge me and call me all sorts of names but the fact of the matter is I've had a major knee surgery that was actually 2 surgeries and when I play sports now I'm not allowed to run. I have ocular migraines with nystagmus and diploplia and I use a cane if I get a bad migraine for feeling curbs etc in front of me and as you said, for alerting others of my impaired vision. I have my cane with me all the time but often don't use it if I am going somewhere near my house, that is familiar, or if I am going with someone. I just started using it (and I'm 28) and I'm not going to lie. I feel a bit of trepedation using it as I am not used to it. more specifically I am not accustomed to having people treat me differently when I use it. ....because I have definitely noticed they do. quite frankly I find it simply absurd!!!!! anyway thanks for the video!!! It's just, "oh, I'm deaf" "oh crap, I can't see. Well this sucks". I just let people around me know that it is a fact of life for me. If I am loud, I probably can't hear you at the moment, but hopefully it will be back in a little while.

    • @sageandcandle
      @sageandcandle Před 7 lety

      Yes. I had to. It was frustrating when I went to doctor after doctor to be told there was nothing there. Like it was in my head. They only started getting a clue in the last couple years. It was like how they treated people with fibromyalgia. If they do not see it on an x-ray, it must not be there. 25 years of suffering with it, being told by family that I was being dramatic or not paying attention, then, oh it has a name. It was actually not officially diagnosed until last year. I figured it out and started asking to be tested 5 years ago.
      Now, I have seen 3 eye doctors and got 4 vastly different perscritions in the past 15 months. They say, something is going on. I think, "you think!" what is it. Wait weeks, get new glasses, can't see the board 5 feet away from me.

    Hi James, I just stumbled across your channel, and really like your videos! I'm also albino, and legally blind, but my vision is much less severe. (Though I do look MUCH more albino XD) I have a question about your nystagmus! I do have it, but mine actually seems to improve slightly. as I age. Some days I actually have quite a bit of control over my eyes to the point the shaking is hardly noticeable, though really straining them sets it off pretty badly, Have yours ever shown any changes, good or bad over the years, and do you feel you might've gained some form of control over it...?

    • @sageandcandle
      @sageandcandle Před 7 lety

      I had glasses that helped for a long time. however, my mother was crazy and took them as a punishment and I had to do without them from 14 until I left at 18. yes, that is medical neglect. but, I had no way of standing up for myself. she told the school I refused to wear them. It made me adapt, however. I continued to make art. my nose was to the paper, but I did it for the love of it. I learned to feel with my body. I felt vibrations before I walked into objects. I felt sidewalk changes with my toes.
      I got glasses again in my twenties. I still remember that night. I sat for hours staring at the stars and the moon. I had never seen them.
      Now, it has changed again. I have no idea what that means for me, but I know I have skills. I can adapt!

    • @LittleVioletTS
      @LittleVioletTS Před 7 lety

      sageandcandle Oh wow, I can't believe you would've been deprived of glasses for so long! But it's really impressive you were able to adapt so well to life without them. It must've been absolutely amazing to get to see right again after so many years!
      I find it a little ironic that so many of us with vision disabilities love art so much though! Most people won't believe I'm legally blind because I'm more advanced in art than a lot of other people in my age group... :')

    • @sageandcandle
      @sageandcandle Před 7 lety

      Yes, I know blind artists, deaf musicians, and one guitar player that had his fingers lost in a machine but still plays with just 2. We find a way.
      My mother was a quite intense, yet a public figure in town. She was cunning and manipulative. She had a cruel streak. She decided I did not "respect" my glasses. So, at 14 she told me I could have them when I was able to buy them myself. I ran away at 18, dropped out of school, and married just to be out. It was a mistake, but I didn't think I had an option.
      It took me quite a while to heal. I did not always deal with it as well as I do now. I had accepted that I was blind and adapted on my own. I had no teacher to turn to. She worked at the school. So, no one helped with visual aids, magnifiers, canes. I figured out ways on my own. But, some teachers would not accomidate. So, I failed classes and got detentions. Again, she told them I refused to wear them. I was a kid. They would not believe me.
      People were shapes of color and voices. I had enough sight to navigate the world at 20/450.
