    People stare at me when I use mine and one time a woman started say I wasn't blind because I was still able to see a little, like she said I didn't need the cane at all but I do

    • @LiveAccessible
      @LiveAccessible  Před 3 lety +2

      That can be so frustrating. I know it because people have done that to me too! However, I think that we can turn those experiences into an opportunity to educate people who don't understand that line is a spectrum and that using a cane doesn't mean that you are totally blind. And even totally blind people don't always use a cane.

    A friend of mine once told me that it’s better to have your cane and not need it than needing your cane and not having it.
    I use my cane even when I can see better in the daytime because peripheral vision still doesn’t work very well in the daytime.
    Definitely better to get orientation and mobility training because it’s better to know how to use a cane properly before trying to use one with improvisation. I also have a cane holster and while I don’t use it most of the time I take it with me when I think I need to.

      Hey Juan! That's great. I know you've been doing really great with your cane training and I'm excited for all your plans! ;) I always bring mine even when I don't use it. Where did you get your cane holster? I haven't found one that I like yet. lol. I don't always have a belt loop or something that can accomodate a holster.... lol. Girl fashion problems.

    I started using a white cane in 2019 when I became legally blind (6/60) because I had bad depth perception. Since then, my vision has deteriorated more where I only have very central vision in my right eye and a very low acuity. So basically very close to only light perception left.
    Using a cane early in my vision loss was the best thing I did. It made life so much easier

  • @redhotjezebel

    I am legally blind after a stroke 7 years ago. I can see bright color and contrast, but can’t make out detail or definition. I also have severely messed up peripheral vision, as well as my depth perception. I can leave my house and get into my husband’s car with out my cane but once I get out at my destination I am dependent on m cane. I had a lot of stigma for a long time with the staring, pointing and whispering. I have finally gotten over that stigma and have begun addressing some people who point or stare/crane their neck and turn it into a learning experience, especially for children who are just curious. It’s important that they know from a young age that people who are blind are just differently abled and we’re not scary or weird.

    • @LiveAccessible
      @LiveAccessible  Před 5 lety +1

      Absolutely! It really did take me quite a while to get over is that as well. However, I finally realize that the cane is just a tool and does not mean anything bad about me or anybody else. We should be confident and proud of who we are instead of being evasive and trying to hide.
      Especially for kids. I don't know how many times I have explained it. I think it's so much better than parents hushing their kids and telling them not to be rude. Is something to be addressed and educated about!

    Hi Karey, I started using a white cane about 10 years ago and my world changed. I have always had low vision, all of my life but excellent mobility vision. I am not sure why, but I really,, Really did not need a cane for travel. When I did eventually need it I was OK to use it in public but I was pleasantly surprised at the increased social interaction with The general public. As a low vision person without the cane I am sure I just looked rude and socially detached. No I contact no just during no smiling back or waving at people just going about my business but not running into things. When I begin using the cane because of depth perception problems, it was like people understood. Instead of waving at me or smiling at a distance, people would come up to me and speak. People would step out of my way and acknowledge me verbally rather than through jesters. I just found it to be a very good icebreaker in social situations. Thanks for reminding us all that we really should let others know that our vision is not normal and we might need a little more consideration out there. As far as memorial day however, I have already been out with Gretchen and we are having an indoor memorial day picnic, 100° forecast

      @LiveAccessible  Před 5 lety +1

      Hey Beverly! Wow, you are always Bringing a new perspective on things for me. What you say is so true. When I have a Kane, people are much more understanding of meeting to verbalize instead of making gestures. Not all the time, because there are still those people that just like to point LOL. But it really does make a big difference! I wish I mentioned that in my video! I'll have to mention that in another one later on down the road and I will definitely quote you on that. ☺️ You are such a wise lady! glad you're having a great memorial day! It is pretty steamy hot over here too, but thankfully not over a hundred! We're actually a bit sick right now. Hi Carrie, I still have some functional vision at 20/400 and missing fields. I also have no acuity in bright lights. I use my cane always outside the house. I have no depth perception and trips/falls could cause a medical emergency if my hardware breaks in my back. It also makes my travel much more efficient over long distances. -Jason

    I am visually impaired and I get around just fine during the day without a cane. Once it gets dark I ABSOLUTELY use my cane! (FYI, the “cane” doesn’t have to be white, I got 1 in green & it has saved me countless times. Before getting my cane I was constantly walking into bushes, chairs, etc. even fell down & broke my finger in 2 places because I thought I was near the wall when it was nowhere near me. I don’t give a crap what anybody else thinks, that cane is a useful tool that helps me move around in otherwise unsafe circumstances. This is MY life & I don’t care what their people think. If I need a cane, darn it, I’m using a cane!

    BRAVO Carrie!
    Be proud of your cane, because it is part of you! You will be an advocate for the blind and VIPS showing how you function as a :normal" productive person!
    I received my first cane when I was 18 years old. I told my mobility instructor that I felt guilty using the cane, because I was taking a cane away from a blind person. Well, he put me straight right away by saying: "What do you think you are?" I always use my cane and I appreciate having it!
    I was passed through school without any training for the blind and VIP. If I had a cane then, it would have save me from getting hurt from falls and walls! LOL Yes, people have a better understanding and are willing to assist me when I use my cane.
    I like Ambutech folding canes

    I have retina pigmentosa I'm severally sighted blind and have no peripheral vision & night blindness, I use my Cane so people know I have sight loss as people are unaware that I have sight loss as I look normal to everyone else. If I don't use it and walk into someone I just get abuse, so to save the stress I use my Cane, I love it as it makes my life so much more comfortable.

    Hey Carrie great video as always. It takes a lot of self-confidence to be able to accept that the cane doesn't say anything negative about you. it takes every person a different amount of time to come to that acceptance and realization. I think it's easier now with more awareness that is being spread through CZcams and Facebook and just in general to reduce the stigma of the cane.

    Hi Carrie I use a cane since my peripheral vision is not that good and I'm partially blind in my left eye. Ever since I've been using my cane I haven't been tripping over things that much and it helps me cross the street. Two of my friends who are blind has told me about the ambutech cane and I want to get it because I like folding canes better. I've been using a can ever since I went to the Florida school for the deaf and blind where I graduated from. I used to be ashamed of my cane when I was younger because I was afraid of people making fun of me but now that I'm an adult I don't care what people think I care about my safety and the fact that I can't see too tough. I actually have a story that I wrote for the nfb about my cane and it's published in the future reflections. Here's the link if you want to check out the story

    Not sure what is happening, but I fell asleep uncontrollably from 2pm- ish yesterday until about 2am-ish this morning. I did a lot of sink laundry before klonking out, and remember eating something spicy with hot tamarind sauce. I meant to swim at some point... I think my circadian is just still extra, extra messed up.
    I remember feeling like a spot light was on me when I first just had to use something to find the edges on the way to my outside mailboxes area. I tried to surreptitiously use a 45" long wooden arts and crafts dowel the first time, and slight of hand hide it when my neighbor caught me right away! I just didn't want to trip over the curb across the driveway. He encouraged me to just break out my real cane. I had to start figuring out what to say to people, and explain that I didn't automatically have magical perfect cane skills, I would have to continue to acquire them every day. There were about five different sets of types of people I would run into and they all needed a different interactional script, so that I could get on with the business of acquiring skills and doing my own time sensitive errands at the same time. I first started in 97. It was an immersive process. I had no choice, and could not go away somewhere else to do it. I had to proceed with reasonable caution, everyday. I am most likely to leave my cane leaning in the middle of a grocery store aisle, when I'm feeling around the shelves for a long time. Sometimes I'll get one or two aisles over from where I left it, before I start reaching out to navigate and wonder why I can't just tell what I'm doing at the moment. I then feel blind, when I hadn't really noticed to myself that I am blind all day. Nothing has changed. I've just left my cane somewhere like some people leave their glasses somewhere. Sometimes I don't notice till it's extra quiet, or there is no traffic to line up with, whether it's cars or flip flops, or other shopping carts rolling.
    At the mall I love to get in the wake of people carrying noisy bags. Grins!

      I absolutely understand how you feel about the perceptions of others and that sometimes we need to speak to certain people of certain way and others in a different way. I would totally suggest trying to bring a backpack or some kind of bag that doesn't require you to hold it. That's what Pablo and I do and it is so helpful because of exactly when we need to hold a lot of things. Trust me, I have to hold little Pablo hand, a car seat, and so I bring a backpack so that I can have everything and try to have my cane available too. sometimes Pablo sticks it in his back pocket or we can all have also looped the elastic around a belt loop. They also have holsters, I'm not too fond of them because they're not very fashionable for me. Hahaha. That's why I just looping around a belt loop if I need to. s always really good to bring it even if you don't use it! You never know when you'll get stuck somewhere and really need it. ☺️

    Hello there I'm Sam I am also legally blind with low vision total blindness in my right eye partial blindness in the left significant loss of peripheral vision due to glaucoma. I began using a white cane 2 years ago I could have been using it way before then but in junior high and high school I did not want to be seen with a white cane walking through the hallways I didn't want people to know I was visually impaired. It was until I started seeing people on CZcams talking about their visual impairment what's that inspired me to start talking about mine I've had several incidents almost getting hit by vehicles and I've always struggled with steps and curbs my depth perception is not all that great either. So I figured it was time that I should start using a white cane regardless of what anybody was going to think. I've had some o&m training when I was much younger which consisted more width familiarization and getting around and just learning to use assistive devices to help me read signs and other things like that since I have low vision. There was some brief introduction on how to use a white cane but not a lot of training in that area. So when I picked up a chain I knew more or less how to use it I can now see that I benefit from use of the cane greatly and I wouldn't go back to not using it.

    I absolutely love my white cane. In fact today I am purchasing a Slimline ambutech. I use my cane everyday no matter where I go. Accept what I'm home of course I am very comfortable with my home environment. I have taken measures to make my home life much easier.
    Great video Carrie.

      @@LiveAccessible just to let you know I end up having severe problems with my pixel 2 XL. Camera stopped working then CZcams wouldn't open was Ike nightmare. Then I had a Samsung 10 plus and that was for riffic when it comes to dictation and TalkBack.
      TalkBack was delayed all the time. And the worst part was dictation was horrible would not pick up half of the words I would say. Got rid of that quick now I have the pixel 3XL because they started selling it at my phone store. And I absolutely love it.

      @@LiveAccessible well I called Google and found out it was a very common issue with the Google pixel 2. In fact, it was the whole reason they added the 2-year warranty to the phone after purchase. From the manufacturer.
      They told me they were willing to fix it but they couldn't guarantee it wouldn't happen again. they told me to contact the seller who I purchased it from first to see if I could get a refund so I did that. Google was going to replace it for me but it was going to take time for me to send it to them then up to 10 days to receive it back. Could not go that long without a phone.
      When I went to the store of my current phone provider. They only had the Samsung Galaxy phones iPhones Moto's and the LG phones. I ended up buying the S10 plus and I absolutely was not liking that phone. If the phone had any care in the world for the visually impaired or blind they would have focused on that and it seems like they didn't to me. The dictation was horrendous. Took me an hour to properly reply to four people on CZcams.
      Also, I noticed that the TalkBack would at times be delayed. The Google pixel 2 despite its problems worked flawlessly with dictation and talk back. so when I went to return the Samsung after not being able to keep the hair on my head because I was pulling it out. They happen to have the Google pixel 3 on display so I traded it for that. I could not be any happier as the Google pixel is by far the best Android I have owned ever to date. And all the crap people are saying about the notch don't worry about it the notch does not bother me at all in fact you can remove the notch through a setting.
      As long as this pixel 3 XL does not cause me issues like the other I will be a forever happy phone owner. The accessibility on this phone is phenomenal. Look how long this message I'm writing you is and it's all by dictation and I've had to not correct anything. it just hears my voice and writes it down. Got to love it! I could not get through three lines of text on a Samsung without having a problem. Was very very annoying.
      I will say though in the defense of the Samsung that if I had 20/20 vision the phone would have been amazing. I just didn't like it because of the accessibility was bad. And this is only my opinion but it is a very strong one

    I take my cane with me and use it when I'm on the street to let people know that I have a vision issue. I feel that it's important to display the cane to be safe even though it may leave me open to the ridicule of others. I find that there are two kinds of people, those who are overly helpful and those who shun me because it makes them feel uncomfortable to be around those with vision issues. Those of us with vision issues must realize that "We don't know what we don't see." That means that we may not be aware of hazards we may encounter like the Mr. MaGoo cartoon.

    Hi Carrie, I have been a cane user since I was about fourteen. When I first got my cane I remember being embarassed and then slowly I started using it more and more until it was something I felt weird without. I now use a folding graphite cane from ambutech.
    Speaking of ambutech I don't remember if you mentioned anything about custom canes in your previous video about them. What are your thoughts on custom canes? I personally have a few different colored ones but I also want to get a standard white and red cane. I've seen many different opinions on if we should use custom canes or the standard canes for safety reasons.
    Anyway great video. :)

      Hey! I actually used to have a pink King, but I am notorious for losing the canes. LOL I haven't given it much thought or research honestly. I I'm not really clear, but I hear that ADA supports a specific type of colored cane with the standard white and red on it. I'm really not sure all the legalities and everything and I'll have to do some research, but I don't see why we should be limited to only the red and white! I love that pink cane wherever it is. LOL I will have definitely have to make a video on that in the future! ☺️ You're not the first one to bring that to my attention. ☺️

    I'm visually impaired with ocular palsy, and I have refused to use a can all my life. But now I'm 51, my left knee is a little wonky, and I am tired of bumping into people because of not having depth perception. I'm also more nervous about approaching stairs than I used to be. What kind of cane is best for me, and what do I say to people who know me when I suddenly bust out with a cane after all these years?

    • @LiveAccessible
      @LiveAccessible  Před 4 lety +3

      Hi Michelle! I can understand why it can be difficult to use a cane, but be brave! I would just be honest with them. There's nothing to be embarrassed about or hide. It's something that can help you and if they are your friends, they'll want that for you, and if not, well, their opinion doesn't mean anything. Also, it's definitely much safer if you are getting nervous about stairs especially. Better safe than sorry. Have you spoken to someone in your state's orientation and mobility? They can help you and teach you how to use one and recommend what's best for you. There are SO many different canes. And they may also have different types for you to try out in person- though probably not right now because of the pandemic.... I personally go between an identification cane- something very light and easy to stow away when I'm in a place I'm familiar with. When it's not a place that I know well, I take out my graphite folding cane. Also, you never know when it can come in hand y when you're out as a woman going around by yourself... at least that's another reason I take it sometimes. lol. I hope that helps!
