  • Visiting Sebu is quite exiting. We do like it here. It is not a very touristy place and that is exactly why we like it so much. This seems still very old school, not yet reached too much with the all and ever consuming progress of modernity which ends up making everything so similar. There is a lot of character to be found here, lots of foods and Malaysia´s biggest indoor market as well as one of the biggest regular ones. We are focusing a lot on that market today and we will try some foods here, like the famous Kampua (now we now how to pronounce it...). Please follow us a long this cool place.

    I'm a Muslim and I don't mind you reviewing pork dishes, I respect food and although it's not my food, it's someone's else pride and joy. In fact, sometimes I watch people eat/ make pork dishes and it will inspire me to do the halal version of it. So it's okay... Continue doing these food reviews, it's adorable especially seeing your little kids eat

    Now you can go to Kapit by road (cars & public transport). Those days, there are no road to Kapit from Sibu. We can only travel to Kapit by express boats, a 3-hours ride by the river. The express boat will bring passengers to Kanowit (1hour) and Song (2hours ride). The Batang Rejang (Rejang River) is huge, wide like ocean. Don't be surprise, even ships carrying containers can sail there.

    Sibu town was started by the Foochows from Fuzhou, so it’s a Chinese settlement so to speak. If you had visited the Chinese Museum by the Kuching Waterfront, it was mentioned there (unfortunately you did mention you’re not into museums so… 🤷🏻‍♀️). I believe it would be an info in the Sibu Heritage Centre too…
    11:03 There are Baba-Nyonya communities in Sarawak but they tend to be known more as Chinese.
    12:04 That’s the Catholic’s Sacred Heart Cathedral.
    12:24 Look at those wild mango! 😍 They’re locally known as “embawang” (Iban), “embang” (Malay)… Sourish and fibre-ish but the locals love it. I know I do. 😊
    Chicken wrapped in newspapers - in the olden days, not many people had fridges especially those from upriver. If you noticed, the market is by the river jetty which makes it easy for those from upriver to bring their jungle produce to sell at the market and to bring home goods including the live chickens. Once home, the chickens would then be dinner…

    • @skeyz
      @skeyz Před 10 měsíci

      Dabai cannot be eaten raw. They must be cooked first by keeping them in hot water for 5 to 6 minutes. The best way is to put them in a bowl, then pour hot boiled water on top. DO NOT cook nor boiling dabai straight on fire, as this will make dabai way too soft (overcooked) and not enjoyable to eat.
      After 5 to 6 minutes, remove the hot water, then put black soy sauce and a pinch of sugar. Mix well. If you need help, just bring your dabai to one of the noodle hawkers when having your meal. I am sure they would be glad helping you to prepare your dabai. Enjoy the taste of borneo.

    I like borneo from your perspective. That garden park is Chinese... Japanese themed park does not go well with older town, "brings back old memories of occupation era". Kompia is like baked tandoori oven bagel. When you do durian video, in addition to normal durian, try to find mountain /wild durian, it has orange to red color flesh.may be readers can help you locate them, its rare but quite different from than normal durian. Best Borneo pineapple comes from Sarikei a town not too far from sibu.pien neek, dingbienghu is another unique sibu street food, the famous one They grind the rIce and Turn them into dingbienhu batter right in the shop...enjoy sibu.

    The end of the boat express business not because of pandemic but because of pan borneo highway was completed last few years so people go upper of the river by bus and by their own transportation. Lack of profit lead the boat business stop totally.

    After the road from Sibu to Kapit became accessible, the express boat slowly reduced their routes frequency due to lack of passengers and they eventually stopped operating early this year if I am not wrong. In those days when I was in Sibu for work and there is still no road to Kapit, I would take the express boat. It's quite an experience.

    0:28 The river you observed is the longest river in Malaysia, Rajang River. The shops along waterfront, I remember having kampua noodles at coffee shops there during lunchtime before work 27 years ago. At that time, kampua noodles costs only less than MYR1.50 each (now above RM4), if I can recall.

    The real reason why the boat no more running is because the city along the rejang river already connected with road more than 2 years ago from Sibu town all the way to inferior town in Kapit division.. so corona is not the reason.. more people using their own car or buses to go to town along the river..

    Thats the Rajang River, the longest river in Malaysia. Next hunt around for their famous snack pork filled buns that are only found in Sibu called Kompia and Komiang.
    Babi is commonly used on a daily basis and its in Malay and Iban language. The formal word for pork is "khinzir".
