Hi Eva Glad it was helpful! Now that I’ve done one spread like this, I’d like to complete the rest of the sketchbook, where I do a tone study than a colour version. I’m sure that will really give me a lot of satisfaction.
I’d always been tempted by tanned paper but never knew how I’d use them. I can’t believe I’ve never seen anyone use black and white linework to fill it? That’s a fantastic idea, it looks so good! 😮😍
These are gorgeous! I love using toned paper, use it all the time, but I do struggle a bit with tonal studies like this. Something about this video, though, clicked for me. I love those brush pens, but the posca is genius! I did have a white brush pen, but it clogged really badly. Now I know what to do when I take my son on a playdate this afternoon!
These are so beautiful!!! The fruit and verges are great but the sea life has a lot more energy and expressive qualities. All are awesome! I can the the fruit on a juice bottle packaging! The garlic and bananas are incredible and have a lot of life to them!
I’ve never had an art lesson in my life, but am learning so much from you! I would love to try the tonal sketchbooks and am encouraged to look for shapes - rather than objects. Thank you!
@@OhnMarWinArt the inspiration hit with the black and white studies on toned paper. I have a gorgeous sketchbook with toned paper I got as a gift a while ago and have been telling myself it's "too good to use" which I know is silly :)
Stunning. I have a small toned Strathmore multimedia sketchbook arriving today and looking forward to stealing some of your suggestions and techniques. Thank you for this.
Im in love the way you do studies! Never , ever seen something so simple yet important!!!❤ I remember doing those studies and hate them with passion but the way you mede me see that middle tone. Today I discovered your channel and I can’t get enough of it! Thank you! ❤
It seems like such an underrated exercise, yet, it has truly elevated my art in recent times. And yes, in my day as an art student, it was charcoal and chalk, which I hated. Using pens is so hasslefree.
This is the first time I’ve seen your channel. I’m loving this study and look forward to giving it a go. I have the toned sketch book you showed. I’ve got one drawing in it and it’s years old. I just may try doing watercolor in it anyway THank YOU for sharing your knowledge
Finished pieces are great to look at but I really enjoy seeing the deep, luscious studies artists create behind the veil of social media. Thank you for sharing 🥰 I made a toned sketchbook out of paper grocery bags lol. Going to use your guidance while working in it.
Sorry Ohn Mar its 1.10am and I forgot to say how much I enjoyed your demo in the toned sketchbook. I got some gift cards to go to the art shop so I shall definitely be getting a white Posca pen, I already have a dark brown brush pen 😆 Thank you for all your hard work giving us demos and showing us your sketchbooks, just love it. You make it look so easy and its not at all.
Hi Ohn Mar! New subscriber here & I've been learning so much from your videos! Thank you for everything you share. Would you consider doing a Domestika course on mixed media sketching? I love being able to just pay per course on there and have it for life without paying a monthly or annual membership. I feel it's much more accessible. I've learned so many great techniques from you that I'm looking forward to experimenting with in my work. 💗
Loved it! Both the still life’s and the dog flower study are great ways to practice values. I did some of these with portraits very early on to get an understanding of the shapes. I think I might get back to doing them with other subjects. Thanks Ohn Mar! 😊
Thank you @Ohn Mar for sharing this class. The idea of a sketchbook snack is lovely!. Doing the same subject at different angles really develops your eye to see items in a more 3D perspective. I've been playing with brush strokes to see how minimally I can paint a subject. I try to just do a step and walk away to let it dry instead of overworking the painting. The results are quite surprising! QUESTION:: any tips on how to know when to stop and call a painting completed?
Glad it was helpful -I am very interested to hear more about minimal brushstrokes. In order to your question, I think it's worth stopping a minute before you start thinking it's time to stop because you always think there's more to do and then the danger of overworking comes in.
Thank you for this video!
This is a great demo using toned paper. Seeing you, Ohn Mar, go from the value study to the color version was immensely helpful. Thanks!!

I wish I was as far along as you are. I hope I can become real good one day. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
You can do it!

It’s quite an old art school technique. I agree it’s not often seen these days.
I loved to see these studies. I haven't used toned paper in a while, but I'm feeling motivated to try it after watching.
Please give it a go!
very interesting study. I have toned paper and love working with white and black...thanks for the share
love every video you put out
THANK YOU
Excellent demo!
Thank you very much Ohn Mar for your inspiring ideas! I loved your sketchbook in toned paper artwork ❤❤
You are so welcome!
Really nice video illustrating the importance of little studies ….. especially focusing on shapes.
Glad you liked it! Everybody sees such polished pieces on social media yet nobody really shows works in progress anymore
I’ve recently found your channel and finding your videos really helpful and inspiring...thank you 😊
You are so welcome!

Love this!
Thanks so much. Do you ever use tonal paper?

Thank you so much! I had so much fun creating this. It was a ‘easy lift’ for such an effective outcome.

Wow, thank you!
I am delighted to have found your channel today. I will be trying your skillshare class this evening ❤️
Wonderful! I’m sure happy to hear that !! Which class are you watching first ?

i would love to see a less rushed sketchbook tour, especially of the animals❤
I agree my first toned sketchbook deserves a longer ‘proper’ sketchbook tour - maybe next month

Such a a great demo. I always love watching you do your thing. Are you panning another skillshare class on tonal paper?
Yes, soon
Love the demos. So valuable to see your two studies. The sketchbooks are wonderful
Glad you like them! I think I’m going to fill the rest of the sketchbook with tone and colour studies per double page spread
For the sketches to be done with a simplistic technique the sketches look really good
Love this so much! Focusing on the shapes is something I am going to work so much harder on! Thank you so much!
You got this! Too often people get bogged down with colour or composition when shape would help you with both of these aspects
I've done a bit of toned paper but not much. I love the effect and the way it gives you the midtones.

I love the toned paper!
This looks challenging and yet fun. Focusing on shapes makes sense. Sometimes I paint a page a solid color with acrylic and then paint or draw on top.
That sounds like a really good fun. I’d like to try that toO
Wow! Just wow!

No worries! It's not a matter of easy or difficult. I just have a lot of fun.

Wonderful to hear that. I did have a sketchbook where I’d also done portrait, tones studies-maybe that could be something for another CZcams video
1. that is my absolute favorite sketchbook of yours
2. you just gave me the best idea to fill my water brush with black ink. I hate fountain pens lol
That’s such a great idea!

Glad it was helpful!
Really cool!! I need to try this!
Please do and let me know how you get on
Awesome! Im going to take your skillshare class. At the end were those sketches done on like ceral box cardboard? Thanks
Thank you for this video…I will try this …it’s unexpectedly pretty and I’m hoping it will help me with my tonals
You’re welcome 😊 I think it’s worth doing as it has many benefits from observation to simplifying.
Could you add Golden GAC 100 to the strathmore toned paper to handle the polka markers better?
I love the toned sketchbook, where did you find it? I looked on Amazon but they didn’t have the 14x14 only in grey 🫤
I am wondering if you might be in the USA. Hahnemuhle is a German brand and I live in the UK so I order from their UK website.
