    00:00 Clean & Store Men's Hats Introduction
    Unlike other types of garments, where machine washing is standard procedure or at least an option (yes, even for structured jackets), you shouldn’t run classic hat styles through a washing machine. How then should you clean and store your hats?
    General Consider For Hat Maintenance
    01:16 1. Take Note Of Your Hats Material
    02:04 2. Consider The Hat's Age And Level Of Dirtiness
    02:25 3. Hold The Hat Firmly By The Brim
    02:33 4. Make Sure Your Hands Are Clean!
    What we won’t be covering in today’s guide are more casual styles like ball caps, beanies, and so on. Our methods are best suited to classic styles like fedoras, flat caps, Panama hats, and the like.
    03:33 Spot Cleaning
    This is a method that requires a bit of patience, and we won’t guarantee it to completely remove all types of especially stubborn stains. But, consider it a good first line of defense that should keep your hat intact.
    ** 04:01 1. Check Strength & Flexibility
    ** 04:24 2. Dust-Off with A Garment Brush
    ** 04:45 3. Dab The Dirty Areas with Damp Cloth
    ** 05:00 4. Avoid Harsh Detergents
    ** 05:41 5. Use Warm Water
    ** 05:50 6. Use A Soft-Bristled Toothbrush
    ** 06:32 7. Dry & Store Indoors
    07:02 Dry Cleaning
    If your stain is of oily composition, using a dry cleaning method might be better. To remove oily stains from things like hair products, lotions, or body oil, you can sprinkle some talcum powder or cornstarch onto the stained area and let it sit. Allow the powder to remain on the area for two to three hours to absorb the stain, then brush it off.
    Whole Hat Cleaning Tips for Different Hat Styles:
    07:46 1. Felt Hats
    10:27 2. Straw Hats
    13:54 3. Leather Hats
    15:42 4. Top Hats
    There are our methods for cleaning your classic hats. If you’re not having success with one method, try another, or perhaps a sequence of methods (with time to dry and rest in-between.
    How To Properly Store Your Hats
    20:04 Long Term Storage
    20:33 Short Term Storage
    Armed with these techniques, you should be able to keep any and every classic hat style in your wardrobe in tip-top shape. Remember to work slowly, carefully, and patiently and you won’t end up mad as a hatter.

    An additional note for our viewers: I neglected to mention that the basin-soaking method for felt hats should generally only be used with softer, "crushable" varieties, rather than stiffer options (which are best left to the care of professional hatters). Remember to exercise caution and clean responsibly!

    Okay, I found this channel because I wanted some hat info... I'm a female who loves wearing a variety of hat styles, and that includes classic fedoras. But I must admit that, besides being a history buff, I've explored many of the other subjects because I just really enjoy seeing these sartorical men looking so spiffy. I'll never get tired of that... we need more gentlemen like that today who appear to care about their personal presentation. We ladies truly appreciate it! Hopefully it carries over from dress to behavior.

    • @rastrats
      @rastrats Před rokem

      Your concerns over modern men's deteriorating dress habits is a common complaint I hear from women. The short explanation is that men are deterred from looking good because modern women clearly feel intimidated by gentlemen, because it undercuts their power play.

    • @btlchk
      @btlchk Před rokem +1

      @@rastrats Wow... I don't know if I buy into that! I have daughters that love a well-dressed man. I think there are way too many females that run around looking like slobs these days, too. Probably not ones working & living in Manhatten, or in a swanky area near the Florida coasts or out in LA, but average America. I don't even want to step a toe out my front door without my cosmetic enhancements and proper jewelry accessorizing my ensemble whether I'm dressed for work or casual. I don't own a lot of very dressy clothes, but lets just say no one is embarrassed taking me to a restaurant. I do see some men intimidated by seeing me well coiffed. It depends on their age. But the trend in dress for men is to not put a lot of effort in unless you work in a high end office. I worked in a university dept and it was super casual for younger profs and scientists. To the point of looking like they came from doing yard work! And why would men be concerned about intimidating a woman? That goes against anthropology. The man is supposed to attract the female with his appearance of being "put together well" and a "good provider". Nope.... can't say that I agree with your premise. Our heads turn for a nice looking gent who looks like he put some effort into a nice appearance. We are not intimidated by it... it turns us on, silly man!

However, I am curious to how to clean a fur-felt hat as this was not covered in detail as all the other materials. I need to clean a Akubra pure fur felt hat it has sweat stain on the under side of brim located at the front and rear of the hat that were not address when the sweat occurred. As a result, the darker tan/beige hat now has sweat stain with probably some oil that appear black. Will the vinegar/water solution spot cleaning method work or should I try something else. Looking forward to guide help. Thanks again.

    Great video. The only issue I would disagree with is the requirement to put hats in their crowns - this is only really a necessity for stiffer hats with stiff brims (i.e. too hats, bowlers, homburgs and cowboy/western/country hats) as the weight of the hat will eventually flatten the brim of placed in the brim. Soft felt or straw hats that do not have a brim curved like that can be placed brim down, assuming the brim has been snapped into an up position. Indeed, some would argue that soft felt hats should be placed on their brim, as this prevents the weight of the hat distorting the shape of the crown. There is some truth to this, but the distortion to the crown of a soft hat is less significant that the distortion to the brim of a stiff hat.
