SVS SB 1000 PRO vs REL T/5x Subwoofer Review In a 2 Channel System

  • You ever wonder what a 12" sub sounds like compared to a 8" sub in a stereo? Yeah, it seems kind of weird to compare them, but they match up pretty well price wise, so I decided to give it a go. The results are probably obvious.

    😂😂 You have big gaps in understanding the operation of the REL subwoofer. First of all, the serial plug, from 1989, is not a serial plug for connecting to a PC, but for wirelessly connecting the subwoofer to the receiver. Before buying a product, document yourself intensively. Second, the low level input RCA works with the crossover in the subwoofer together. Insert the RCA cable into that jack, set the crossover to 80Hz from the subwoofer, respectively to 80Hz from the receiver/amplifier, then turn the Hi/Low Level knob for volume (gain). This jack uses the same circuitry on the subwoofer board as the High Level Input. This plug, like the Low Level Input, is used more for music. For both (music+films) both inputs are used at the same time: High Level Input (with the speakon cable in the package) + Low.1 LFE. Both at the same time, that is, a speakon cable connected to the High Level Input jack (for music) and an RCA cable connected to the Low.1 LFE jack (for movies). You have a ton of movies on REL's CZcams channel, but it's hard to watch I see. I watch ALL THEIR MOVIES. First document yourself!!!!

    Recently added a stereo pair of the REL T5x’s to my Manley Stingray/Heresy IV rig after an exhaustive sub-search, and I couldn’t be happier. I find the Nuetrik speaker-level connectors absolutely amazing, and the option to add lossless wireless via the “80s computer connector”, is a nice addition. Personally, the customer service I have received from REL has been great. The ability to adjust crossover to my Heresy’s has been a game changer, with the subs disappearing, and my H4s sounding like what I would imagine to be on the level of Cornwall IVs or better. Interesting/entertaining review my friend. Keep up the good fight. Hope your channel keeps growing!

    I like your review bc it shows the search of the customer within those options. There are too many "experts" on CZcams, but I wanted to hear the thoughts and thinking of someone going through their decision. ... I am in the same boat, torn b/w these two, and even considering the REL zero as I prefer bass crispiness to boominess.

    Nice video. 8" subwoofers usually have tighter and less distorted bass. I tend to like smaller drivers. I'm getting a rel sub. Have you compared using the real cable to your main speakers? If so did you hear any differences? Thanks

    • @6AM_YT
      @6AM_YT  Před rokem +1

      I've tried the REL with the speaker connection as well as a sub out as well as line level and volume level outs. If there is a difference, it's not enough to worry about. If I still had an amp or preamp that had a sub out, I would probably use that. Otherwise, I'm happy with the speaker outputs I've been using.

      You are right, as they are faster and don't sound slow. The largest woofer that I accept for music on my subwoofer is 10 inches, but 8 inches is optimum. Anything larger will be great for bass music and to watch movies, but not for complex music.

  • @vanwiseman
    @vanwiseman Před 2 lety +6

    Cool comparison/review. I think the fact these two units are similar in price makes them near apples/apples for comparing. I haven't heard these units, but have listened 12" to 8" subs before. There are tonal differences, i.e. the 12" moves more air and typically plays lower, but it's not always the case. If the 8" is engineered for longer excursions, it can sound like a 12" in the deeper response (think: Sunfire True sub). Chief advantage of the 12" is that it will move more air with less excursion, so it plays deeper (and louder) than an 8" with lower distortion. Excursion = distortion, basically. Advantage of the 8": it's smaller, easier to blend into room decor. The REL is also more stylish, IMO. It's give and take.
    Room placement is a big part of sub performance. Move them around, try middle of walls, avoid corners. Try between your stereo pair. There's a technique where you can put the sub in your listening position, then crawl around the room (on the floor) until the bass sounds good, then relocate the sub to that spot. Your variable phase control on the SVS is a nice feature. As you use the crossover filter to blend the sub with the the stereo pair, phase comes into play where the speakers' and sub's responses overlap. Phase = time alignment of the waveform. As the sub and stereo pair are different distances from your ears, and from the walls, room reflections are at play, and so there is cancellation and augmentation happening in different areas in the room. If you have a mid-bass peak or a dip in your listening position, the phase control can help smooth it out. Phase is not the same as polarity; it's variable and can be gradually dialed in so that waves meet your ears at the same time. Getting the phase aligned gives definition and sharper impact.
    Good luck playing with these. Interested to hear your follow-up opinions once you have time to listen and test some more.

    You really should have done more research on the pair especially with the SVS 1000 SB PRO down to 20HZ. Plus 325w RMS up to 820+. The REL is tighter but only 125w A/B class and down-firing. To be honest in you're living room you're better off with the SVS SB Pro front- firing. Plus you have it connected to your phone app. So need to change the mode all done with your phone. Plus 5 year warranty and White gloss and back gloss available. Many reviews have been done Maybe the HT 1205 REL 500 RMS which is nearly £900. Then i would look at the SVS SB 2000 pro for same price and 550 RMS up to 1500w for music and Films. If you have the room . : )

    After a lot of research, I selected the T-5X as I'm strictly music with my system. McIntosh MA-252 and their XR-50 (bookshelf) speakers is my foundation. The speakers are pretty flat to 40hz so im looking for reinforcement for just lower frequencies. The T-5X does exactly that without getting in the way where it isn't needed. I have the crossover set @60 and use the high output signal. 12x12 room with stone a floor helps the bass immensely as I'm fortunate that was the case. Sounds like you haven't quite found the sweet spot yet. You might just have a difficult room to dial in. Did you contact REL directly? Maybe they have suggestions to help you along.

    Rel are excellent no doubt about it.
    Regarding the high level connection marketing I think it is due to tgat every amplifier has speakers level output and not all have preout outputs . I think if every amplifier had low level output them REL would have been marketing rhe LOW level connection.
    All of those connections are good . Low level is jast as good as high level connection if not better in certain cases.
    I prefer the low level connection if svs. Two preout outputs on your amp and two RCA cables and your done. simple. efficient.

  • @tchernob
    @tchernob Před 2 lety

    Nice video, hope you re not putting your sub in a corner as it would be bad for the sound. About the crossover I agree with you only on the saving power part, for the rest the crossover is not a straight line it s a roll off so the frequencies will cross (cross over i should say 😂) so it will not change that much. The first input you have should come from a pre out the second one from a sub out, so you did good. A lot of reviewer say the high level input is the best way to plug it, never tried cause I don't really believe it and I have a Naim on which Banana are mandatory and I don't want to change my cables.
    A good start to get the right volume / crossover for your sub is having an actual volume meter and putting the crossover like 10hz above your speakers limit. And then work from there

    I would say you should read up a lot more about how to set up your subs and decide what is going to suit your set up. I doubt very much you have got the best out of either of these Subs yet but keep going you will get there. If your amp has its own crossover then set your sub to LFE and run one RCA cable from the LFE /Sub out on the amp to the LFE in on your sub - one cable! - do not mix different cables with different effects. Both makes are excellent but have there own sound. The Rel will have a nice higher up bass, the SVS will seriously underpin the sound of your Bookshelves and add this bottom end notes - just don't turn it up too high!
