Is it just me or have we thought too much about gaming? As a child or in my youth I simply bought the latest console that interested me and bought games for it that I found interesting. I played them without thinking about what I was playing on, what other people thought about it and all the other stuff that comes your way these days. It doesn't matter if it's retro, current-gen, PC or something like that. It's about pausing your everyday life, switching off and relaxing. Just having fun. Every generation had its problems. You don't have to play every current game. You choose what really interests you and not what the current trend dictates. FOMO is a problem. But you can work on it. It's important not to devote yourself to this topic all the time. Then it will work.
Why watching this guy feels so relaxing? I do not agree with most of his rumbling, but I really enjoy hearing him.

I've been watching your content for quite some time now and I really dont think I can handle all the back and forth. Ultimately it doesnt matter man, whatever gaming makes you happy is what you should do. But I feel like you're indecisiveness makes viewers very confused on where you actually stand.
I also want to REALLY stress that I dont want you to take this negatively. You seem like a really good dude. I am not trying to criticize you on a personal level. Just feel a little lost as a viewer and I feel like I cant really trust what you say you want to do moving forward. Best of luck to you!
I strangely found some form of comfort watching you work out your struggles on your gaming journey. Thing is a lot of us are doing it but more privately - any stick you get don’t take it to heart mate. Life’s not black and white.

A month ago I said "I accept I'm not a gamer anymore" and here I am playing nostalgic games now. I understand now that I'm a "nostalgic player" but I dabble in modern games only when they're a 10/10 in my opinion. It's refreshing.
It does feel cathartic to sell old unneeded items that you had great memories with to someone who has a genuine interest in those said items (old games, cards etc.). They can have their own great memories afterwards.
I finally beat Weiss in Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade around 11:40 PM last night. I beat him on Bill & Ted Day (June 9) wearing my Be Excellent To Each Other hat. 69, dudes! It’s my first ever game I ever went platinum/100% complete.
I need to thank *Jame’s* *Guide.* I followed it nearly exactly the same with the exception is I didn’t have a second Luck Up for Tifa. I was able to beat him using that guide by my 3rd attempt. The key Materia was Skill Master. I needed that extra ATB for Cloud and Aerith once I got Weiss in that first stagger. Tifa needing Unbridled Strength 2x before True Strike 2x to get her Rise and Fall also helped a ton.
It took me about a week and maybe 10-15 hours and after 300-500+ failed attempts. For anyone who feels discouraged, I was getting whooped easily. But once you figure out Weiss’ first phase pattern and you know how to dodge him and then stagger him early, it became pretty easy. Have patience and persistence. The last part I couldn’t figure out was getting the most damage on him during that first stagger. Because he will heal himself again and then insta-kill right after.
Once he gets to his third phase, Reprieve and Carbuncle wasn’t saving me anymore. And I had many fights that went pretty long until he would kill me with a second Immaculate End. You need to kill him fast. Also, don’t waste your time on Gotter. The limit breaks have a long animation that will only kill time and he can shift to his next phase while the animation is still going. Don’t waste time on summons. Attack him as fast as possible with the most damage as much as possible once staggered.
Use Fury Ring on all of them. Any of the black magic -aga are the key to doing the most damage on his first stagger and during his gun phase. I settled with Fire over Ice as the animation is faster. I killed him using Firaga spells from Cloud and Aerith using the L1/R1 while having Weiss still focused on Tifa. You don’t want Weiss to interrupt the attack. Synergy + Fire is also important. I think my last hit came from a Level 1 fire spell from Aerith. The final hit on Weiss was anticlimactic.
I’m on the opposite spectrum from Julien. I want to play new games or at least games I never got to play in the last 15 years or so. I was on that nostalgia trip with retro games back in 2021 when I turned my Z Flip 3 into a mini GameCube. I even have the GameCube intro as my animated gif on the cover display. I want the new stuff. PS4 games will eventually be “nostalgia trips” and “retro” in another 10 more years. Eight Gen of gaming is becoming my favorite gen in gaming. It gave us…

Not that I prefer FF7 Remake over the original from 1997. OG FF7 will always be my favorite video game of all-time. I have no intention wanting to completely replay FF7RI again. I will not restart a platinum trophy on a different platform. I spent 200+ hours to do that just to get an achievement nobody will ever see except me. And I will always prefer Shenmue II over III even if the Dreamcast/Xbox graphics are dated and it having less fun mini games. That’s where nostalgia has a stronghold on those two games.
I don’t know about you but I do enjoy this era with modern graphics we’ve had since the PS4/Xbone days or even since the PS3/X360 days. At least certain games. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is easily the best Mario Kart game of all-time. I love Double Dash but 8 has way more tracks, characters, vehicles, and no ugly pop-in that the GameCube had. I did enjoy Super Mario 3D World quite a bit. Don’t neglect this era. It’s pretty good too.
Eventually, this era will become the “past” and “nostalgia” and then that’s when you start to appreciate it. It happened with the Star Wars Prequels. My generation hated them but the generation Julien comes from grew up on them. So revisionist history comes to play. It really depends on the era you grew up on. Julien’s kids will say this current generation of gaming is dear to their heart in about 20-35 years.

I replay the 4th gen the most but my favorite home console of all-time is PS1 from the 5th gen. While my favorite gaming device ever is the Steam Deck which I guess is part of the currently maligned 9th gen since it did come out in early 2022 (15 months after PS5) but has the horsepower of 8th gen consoles between an Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

^ The three greatest gaming devices I’ve ever owned. Listen, I love my PS1, Dreamcast, GameCube, and Super Nintendo. But what’s the point for any of them hooked on a TV when I can play them on a Steam Deck while on the go?
I keep my modded Vita around because it’s small and comfortable to play on. The d-pad is stellar. I don’t need a Miyoo Mini because of it. Switch is the better handheld than Vita. I actually don’t use my Vita for much gaming. Mostly to watch shows. The screen is too dim under direct sunlight. But Vita is closer to my heart since I’m more of a Sony fan and I’ve owned the Vita much longer.
I want to own the LEAST amount of gaming hardware to cover the MOST amount of generations to emulate. Deck + Vita + Switch covers all of that. Valve is basically Microsoft Xbox here. You can’t beat a trinity of PC + Nintendo + Sony. The least amount of FOMO if you have all three at your disposal.
Since I don’t own a PS5, I’m missing out on FF7 Rebirth. I can wait 2 years for it. I still got tons of games in my backlog. Time to 100% complete Shenmue III next. Beating Weiss makes me more confident I can 100% complete most of my games in my Steam library. To plat FF7 Remake was only the beginning…
I’ve meant to comment on the last several videos you’ve made. As another 30 year old husband (and soon to be dad), I 100% agree with your mindset. I’ve been working to incorporate minimalism with my gaming hobby and the key is realizing we can’t play everything. So focusing on just retro games or one console/company is fine. You still have an infinite amount of great games to play on the Switch alone 😂

What you're talking about is something that I have been realizing over the past few years. As my friends from my college years become more busy with their own responsibilities and we see each other less, I have realized just how much my taste was being influenced by those around me. I don't think there is anything necessarily wrong with that, but for the past few years, I have been spending more and more of my gaming focus on games and franchises from my childhood OR games that scratch the same itch. Capcom games, Nintendo games, Square Enix games. Some Sega too. Those publishers represent the bulk of games I am interested in. This past weekend, my parents were visiting and so we took a trip to Vancouver Island. I missed the announcements. Historically, I would be champing at the bit to see what I missed. But now? I don't really need to know what's coming out. I saw some announcements once we got back and I just didn't care. I think the only upcoming game I am looking forward to is Monster Hunter. I'm happy for people who are looking forward to these other upcoming games, but as for me, I just want to find time to revisit Final Fantasy IX.

Hey, I've been watching your videos reselling, found your channel about a week ago. You may have answered this but I may have not gotten it completely. But here's my question, what's the point of limiting yourself on the type of console? Why not just say you're a gamer, and say at this point in time I'm into this, and at this other point in time I'm into this other console. Why pick a favorite at all? Is there a benefit to it? Why not? Just go with what you're into at that moment, and when your interest change just go to that other console at that point in time.
Do you do any actual playthroughs or walkthroughs on this channel or is this more of a vlogging style channel about your gaming experience

Honestly a lot of the excitement that comes from the summer game showcases (RIP E3) is mostly just hype anyway, which is what the companies want. I have let myself get overly excited for games only to be disappointed way too many times. So now when all these events are going on, my mindset is essentially "That looks cool, but we'll see how it turns out."
I'm experiencing a very similar feeling. Modern gaming does not excite me, I have a huge backlog of games that seem like a chore to get to, and I've just been enjoying nostalgic replay through of childhood games, games I missed, and retro games in general.
I think You are wrong about your perception. It has little to do with nostalgia. You clarified your position when you answered me in your video a couple videos ago. Your focus is about your daughter right now. SHE plays these games and wants you to play them with her. If she wanted to play steamdeck games, I guarantee you wouldn't be all about Nintendo, you would be about steam. You don't spend months shouting to the heavens how great steam and steamdeck is only to go, oh never mind, I'm super Mario all the way. Your super Mario today because your daughters world is super Mario so your going to go with that. You are basing your gaming identity on your daughter, not yourself. You are losing your gaming identity to her. That's all fine but I think you are fooling yourself if you think this is all about nostalgia. That is a very small part of it. I think she is exaggerating it in you.
That's pretty much it. He's made it VERY clear in his past videos. His inspiration has been reinvigorated because he watches his daughter play Mario and all of the old games he used to play. Now I will say I think nostalgia plays a part in that though, but moreso because of his daughter. He was free with his Steam Deck and would have been even more free if he committed to building a gaming PC, but he chose Nintendo due to his daughter and there's nothing wrong with that. I can only speak for myself on this but I'm a gamer at the end of the day. There are experiences that every console offers that you happen to miss out on when you choose to lock yourself down to a single console. I play with my family and friends a lot. But that's why I also have a PC too
I got the RG35XX SP recently and have been addicted to it along with my PS3 and Switch is all I been playing. I sold my ps5 and psvr2 and have a medium spec PC on the side rarely play it anymore. The industry is about greed and not fun now also im sick of subscriptions and updates every time i turn on a modern gaming system. I want the elegance of turning on a game when i feel like it and instantly being able to get my fix. Theres soul missing from todays gaming industry and it resonates in the games.

First, sorry didn’t watch all your previous videos and even this one for that matter, but from the thumbnails and titles, I think we can talk.
I know you had a special connection to your dad from video games and it is your favorite hobby. So we are similar on those points. I tried to let talk my nostalgia and go strictly on emulation side of things. But I also know you have young kids, so do I , almost 6 and 3 and another one loading. What I did was to put two primary focus and chose a system from that. What appeals to me the most, old Nintendo franchises AND what do I want to share with my kids when the time’ll come. So for my tastes, I went with the Switch and never looked back. I also own a SNES Classic for that special time.
I watched the xbox games showcase and alot of the games looked really good now im thinking about getting a series x again. This time Im keeping it.

I started gaming with my daughter when she was 4 and Mario deluxe was her first game. She’s 14 now and is an incredible gamer with a very diverse pallet. Enjoy making memories with your kids. Building core memories and all :)
Feel the controversial decision. I’ve made the decision to quit with pc gaming, tired of upgrades and troubleshooting or when something isn’t optimized to where I just want to play a game.

I get a lot of choice paralysis when it comes down to what i wanna invest my time in so i completely get selling consoles ive sold so many switchs ps4 and xboxs have left pc gaming twice now i just try and pick a few games and play em, i say just do what brings you joy in the long run man its a shame your getting some back lash for flip flopping on ideas when your just trying to figure out what you want to do
I think people are misunderstanding what julien is saying here, this is what i interperate as.. at heart his favourite consoles and games have always been from nintendo...and although he has enjoyed and covered all consoles and handhelds and been trying to cover gaming on all these aspects, he's always stressed his time as a farther and the limited time he has to game, not to mention the time committed to being a youtube content creator, and trying to please everyone with your content.. and as julien has alslways called it "his gaming journey" and him try to him whats most optimal for him and his lifestyle..and what he also believes would be most beneficial for other busy dads in his situation...i just feel as his daughter is getting older and showing love and interest in the Nintendo switch, its where he gets to probably to kill 2 birds with 1 stone! By enjoying quality time with his daughter and use all his free gaming time, so im assuming thats why he feels going forward the channel at least for this period in his life will be much more Nintendo related as that's where all his time is being spent, i think he just feels like he cant commit to covering all games and consoles in the gaming world, as lets be honest guys im a 40 year old and not a farther and even i cant keep up with everything Nintendo..xbox..and Nintendo give us, its really overwhelming at times, i own a switch...ps4 and xbox series s and have mostly been playing the xbox since i got it for xmas, as i have just been enjoying it the most, i will go back to my other consoles when im in the mood for them,
