Lando Norris is scared of Max Verstappen

  • Lando Norris has extended his contract with McLaren, and this has fans questioning if Lando Norris is SCARED of Max Verstappen. Some see this as a missed opportunity and a sign that Lando Norris fears the idea of racing alongside Max Verstappen at Red Bull. Others made comparisons to Lewis Hamilton joining McLaren to race alongside Fernando Alonso in 2007, and have questioned if Lando lacks the same mentality. I think the suggestion that Lando Norris is "scared" makes no sense, and shows that F1 fans have the wrong idea about what drivers think. Enjoy.

Find it sad that so many people using this as something against Norris. First of all Max is having a huge amount of respect for Norris everybody could learn from that (see the interviews where max won and if he was surprised with Norris next to him, he's full of praises of Norris what an incredible driver he is and he doesn't say that often).
But it's like you sad, Schumacher stayed with Ferrari when they where not on top of the game. Same with Verstappen he did stay with the 3rd team on the grid, stucked it out. More drivers should do such. So have respect for Verstappen but also Norris and Leclerc. Nothing wrong with the team you believe in you can make big.
Just as you say, it will be hard to beat Verstappen in this team where he is obvious the golden boy. They invested in him, probably the reason why Newey is still around. It's a golden team they build. Now it's time for them to get all the achievements, but there is no driver at this moment can beat Max at Red Bull (they might build a faster car).
But IF Norris would have beaten Verstappen at Red Bull (in his prime), that would also be an achievement what nobody would expect.

Michael building up Ferrari is nothing like what Max has done at RB or what Lando could achieve at McLaren. The drivers nowadays don’t do enough in terms of how a team grows compared to what used to be the case, especially with what Schumi did.
That aside, Norris is yet to prove himself. He can get as many podiums as possible but if he can’t get a win, he’ll always be that one step away from being closer to the top. People who say that he hasn’t had a decent chance just need to look at how Max won his first ever race. Norris’ best chance is always going to be at McLaren and I believe he’s made the right choice for himself

Honestly, would he be wrong to worry about his career and reputation? I seriously doubt Lando is much better than Gasly or Albon. In fact, I think Albon might actually be more talented (perhaps not mentally, though). Those guys took a serious hit driving against Max. It's like the dream or delusion they had has shattered upon entering the big team, being outclassed, and realizing that they can't match this guy.
Gasly will never admit it, but Albon spoke very candidly about the affair. Not once did he say, 'the car and the team are built around Max.' In fact, he said it wasn't! He mentioned Max driving the car so sharp and twitchy, ramping it up over the season, making it uncomfortable for Alex to follow. he liked the car and the general setup just not to the extreme that verstappen was doing it.. basically saying he was getting outclassed at his own thing. gasly wanted something diff from the car for example.. but albon was basically on the same page and always felt the support from the team (its all a myth that verstappen performs better because hes catered to)
A lot of talented drivers like Lando might be better off keeping the dream alive. Be the big fish in the team

"(its all a myth that verstappen performs better because hes catered to)"
It's not entirely a myth, and we've seen that play out for the past two seasons with Perez. As the car is developed over the season, it starts to lean more towards certain driving characteristics. Oversimplifying, Max likes oversteer while Perez likes understeer. Max is much more comfortable with a "lively" rear end than Perez. And the driver input is what directs changes to car setup and development. Red Bull would be idiotic to listen to their second driver over Max.
Ricciardo had the same problem at McLaren, the car wasn't suited to his driving style and he just couldn't adapt. That's why it was always so ridiculous how people pretended like he just forgot how to drive or something.

    • @dco1019
      @dco1019 Před 3 měsíci +2

@@rars0n Horner always maintained that they develop the car to become objectively quicker. An understeering sluggish car is inherently not faster, notwithstanding that individual drivers could be quicker with a car setup like that compared to another driver. But objectively, Red Bull and Newey are of the opinion that the sharp and nimble car is the evolutionary path they need to follow, rather than a car that is front end limited on every circuit. I believe it has aero efficiency advantages. Horner said they never had a car that was quick that wasn't like that.
Front-end limited cars are easier to control on the limit, cause you don't 'snap understeer' sorta speak ... Its gentle...so both drivers would naturally be closer together. However, it's not Red Bull's priority to deviate from their design path to accommodate a driver's comfort. the driver is free to setup the car how he sees fit if it's quick... But then obv must bow to the setup of the other driver if thats the one who's setting by far the best benchmarks. There's no escaping that process if you're not quick enough with doing your own thing.

Albon is great, very talented. But I do recognize that he's driving vs a guy now that he knows he's much better than... It's much easier to perform then right? Where lando for sure had a bit of uncertainty and pressure to deal with.

I think Red Bull would be a good short-term option for Norris, but if he joined them in 2025 he would only have one year before the rule changes. Perhaps one year wouldn't be enough time for Norris to fully adapt to Red Bull. Staying at McLaren on the other hand until the rule changes could be a better option long-term as they could hypothetically jump Red Bull in 2026. Maybe Lando Norris is scared of Max Verstappen, but he made a smart medium/long-term decision. If anything he should be more worried about McLaren's other driver lmao

Funny to see Lando’s fans screaming that he should get the RB seat, and when he chickens out; now is the “correct move, the smart move” to be scared of MV.
Lando has not a SINGLE win, he’s not even someone to pay attention to.

Norris have absolutely no reason to fear Verstappen, but any driver who are settled in a team they know with a car they understand and where they're able to perform at their best would be downright stupid if they left to join the team with the generational talent. Would Häkkinen have left McLaren to partner Schumacher in Ferrari? Absolutely not. Was he scared of Schumacher? Hell no.

The only people i see saying Lando is "scared" or "lacks mentality" are people on Reddit
And we all know what those kind of people are

I would choose to stay at McLaren aa Number 1 vs Number 2 at RB with the progress made in the 2nd half of 2023 at McLaren. What idiot would partner Max? Even Max of 3 years ago would lose to Max in 2023

Lando only fears his own teammate, Oscar.
