The looming problem facing Red Bull's F1 chasers

  • Ferrari, McLaren and Mercedes all have Red Bull firmly in their sights - and all have different technical weaknesses to overcome before they can reach their target.
    BUT there is a separate problem that each of them has in common, that will only become more difficult to deal with as their F1 cars become more competitive.
    This has nothing to do with Aerodynamic Testing Restrictions, cost caps, or anything else F1 might be dreaming up to balance out the performance of the championship’s best teams, and everything to do with the people those teams employ to get the most from the machinery they make - the drivers.
    Whichever way you want to slice it, the current lineups at Ferrari, McLaren and Mercedes are EXTREMELY strong. And strong driver lineups inevitably and unavoidably create MAJOR stress for their teams.

      I don't think so. It's been Lando's team for ages. And I doubt he would be too happy if the team started favoring Piastri. His relationship with McLaren is like Verstappen and Redbull.

      @xGUANdeLUPEx Před 5 měsíci +28

      This can change in a whim.
      The grid is the friendliest it's ever been, but a lot of that can end very quickly if the supposed 2nd driver starts outperforming the lead driver. I feel like Norris could already be feeling this pressure from thebother side of the garage and is slowly inching towards the front of his mind.
      These guys want to win, if there was no drive to, then there would be no sport/competition to watch or sell, and basically no point in it happening.

    • @MashifyLV
      @MashifyLV Před 5 měsíci +8

      Nonsense! There is plenty of potential basis there.
      If the team continues being just as strong and even improves compared to others, tensions can't not rise between drivers, since they are fighting for such top spots.

    • @dannypesek
      @dannypesek Před 5 měsíci +15

      Also disagree. I could be wrong, however, I don't remember Norris making as many mistakes in '22 as he did in '23. Part of that would be him pushing more when the car had the potential of podiums, but also pressure from Piastri. I think they have a good teammate relationship, but I think as Piastri's race pace begins to match Norris', then a bit of tension will arise.

      Norris beat Piastri 2:1 in qualifying & race in 2023. The evidence isn’t there, hanging it on a loaded question asked to a new team principle in his second language is a bit thin. I am sure Piastri will push Norris harder as he develops, but the track-based evidence still says Norris will respond.

      @@djoetma The Mclaren wasnt designed around Norris . Mclaren said the car is designed to be quick and they cant factor in a particular drivers preferences. Norris has stated he doesnt like the car as it is. Piastri had a great junior career but so did Lando , arguably even better as Lando won five back to back championships as a rookie and only failed in F2 if you call coming second a failure when driving for an inexperienced team against George Russell and other future F1 drivers.
      Oscar will beat Lando on occasion thats the nature of F1. he is a very good driver but will he beat him over a season. I very much doubt that in the coming season. There is quite a gap between them.

    A strong driver pairing means managing the egos, the strategies, the expectations of the car and managing the respective fanbases.
    Every driver is there to perform for themselfs and their take on responsibility to the team is to keep the car in one piece and bring it over the line as quickly as possible.
    A strong or weak teammate is of no consequence to them as shown many times by the greatest in the sport. I found it highly amusing that Gary Anderson put the pairing of Verstappen and Perez on number 10 because of Sergio's performance which was partly due to the drivability of the RB19. Pierre Wache said in a recent interview that the only regret they had is that they couldn't get both drivers to perform well in the RB19. That is one thing they are planning to rectify with the RB20. If that is the case than I suggest we have this conversation again about strong driver pairings.

    Wait what about Aston Martin?

    Saying that Max’s performance is only due to the car is so ignorant. It’s his driving style joined with the car is what made the season as it was. Checo had the same car and his performance was mediocre at best throughout the season. It’s not only about the car.

    Sainz and Hamilton like rear ended Car, Russell and Charles like front end car. Mercedes going the rear ended car, while Ferrari moving towards front ended car to suit Leclerc.
    Russell and Carlos will be disadvantaged by this. So the best team would have been Sainz and Hamilton in Mercedes and Charles and Russell in Ferrari

    I only see Mercedes and Hamilton to take it to Redbull and when it comes to qualifying that Hamilton mostly chooses a long race stint set up then setting up for the 1 lap pace because of tyre degregration.

    I don't think Ferrari is going to have a problem with Leclerc and Sainz because Leclerc will do almost anything for Ferrari(as we saw in Abu Dhabi), and Sainz is not fast enough

      They have BY FAR the strongest lineup. How the the race can vote for Mercedes, (unless it was voted for pre season, which i think it was) who have a driver who, out of the teams in this video and AM, only finished above the rookie and the pay driver whilst every other team didnt have the car for at least 8 weekends

      @@dylanburston7453 Yes, that was a pre-season vote and George was coming from a season where he beat Lewis. But surely he cannot be a worse driver now than he was a year ago?

      @@soundscape26 Ye, thought i remembered the video.
      I think George struggled more with the anti dive front suspension introduced with the Monaco upgrade, because Lewis clearly became better after the upgrade, weras they were close before.
      I also think George is trying too hard and doesnt let things come naturally, like trying to do Carlos DRS trick just after singapore at Suzuka, and trying to do strategy calls.

    Question is: can each of these Red Bull chasers become so good in 2024 that Red Bull can't get away anymore with a clear second driver that leaves too many points on the table?

      2023 rather showed that marginal advantages look like domination when the 2nd-5th place teams are all taking points off each other, so if they all get closer? Nah, Pérez will be enough.
